Chapter 5: Magic Study
"Hero?"
"….................................."
"Uhm..................."Hero"?
It's has been fifteen minutes and Iris could not get any reaction from Nathan. He was entranced, grinning ear and releasing a laugh that made Iris feel completely uncomfortable. He had a Status Screen, not a video game but and actual one and most importantly he had magic, though he had to admit nature type magic wasn't his top choice or a choice at all, but beggars can't be choosers. Most of his magic consist of recovery magic, though he would rather have an attack, all and all keeping oneself at peak condition during a fight would make a huge difference. Not to say he didn't have any form of attack magic, Phytokinesis basically is control over plants and the ability to manipulate them.
This give him many different ways to attack. Nature is everywhere and so many forms and shapes, it would be a clear advantage if he had to fight in a forested area. Besides that, he had plant growth, this is good for times when there aren't many plants around, he’d just grow what he needed whenever he needed, only downside is according to the description is that he had to consume a plants seed in order to make one of his own, meaning that as of now he couldn't even grow grass, not that he could grow anything here anyway, since this area was completely void of nature of any sorts, so he had magic but couldn't use it. Though he thought, there was something he could try and he had the perfect test subject.
"HERO!"
"Ahhhh...sheesh Iris, you trying blow out my eardrum or something!?"
"I do apologize, but I've been calling out to you for a while now, you talking to yourself and making a very unpleasant expression.
"Sorry about that (unpleasant expression), actually I was just about to speak, I need you to do me another favor, a very important favor."
"If it is in my power, I will do anything.”

"Cool, wait here."
Nathan went down in around a corner, he returned moments later with the history book they were reading from earlier.
"Okay Iris, make this book levitate."
"Understood”
"Good now send up about fifteen feet."
“A-alright.”
"Okay, now move it forward about two feet, aaannnnnd perfect, let it go."
"Pardon!?"
"Let it fall."
"…........................Hero, sorry for questioning you, but from my position, it looks as though if I were to let this book fall, it would descend onto you.
"That's the plan, drop it.”
"…......................................."
Iris slowly let the book back to the ground and quickly floated over to Nathan.
"You must still be confused, here lie down."
"I'm not confused you goof, and where'd that pillow come from?"
Nathan explained to her his magic.
"Ah, I see, by causing injury to yourself, you were going to use "Healing" ability.
"Exactly."
"Here please lie down, you’re confused."
"Knock it off, I just need a little bump just to test if my magic works."
"Hero you are not allowed to injure yourself, nor will I cause you injury."
"If you’re worried about me getting hurt don't I'll be-
"HERO.........YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED........... TO INJURE YOURSELF."
Iris smiled down at him, at least it looked like she was smiling. The aura she was releasing made seem as though she was not informing him, it felt more like she was threatening him.
"Y-You know what, hurting myself, n-not a good idea, I-I don't know what I was thinking, I swear.
"How Wonderful, it seems you have come back to your senses, I'm glad."
Nathan made a mental note, to never intentionally harm himself, in front of Iris. He was sure he would not like the outcome. Iris made a gesture to Nathan.
"Hero, please follow me.’’
“Okay?”
“I didn't want to, but if you dead set on using your abilities, then I have no choice.
"Where are we going?"
"Just down the hall here at the end are where the Magic Tomes are held.

"Magic Tomes", more spell books?"
"These spell books are special, they are mana infused, utilize primarily when someone is unable to learn a spell. They can also be used for quick spell casting from the many spells in the tome."
"Wait, I thought you said I had to be able to learn the spells first hand and order to utilize them.
"It’s better and safer that way. Using a spell tome is mainly for rapid spell casting, no incantations or practice needed, just as long as you know the spells name written in the tome, you can utilize. However, magic tomes mana is not everlasting. Eventually the tome will lose its mana and the spells will become unusable.
"And since I never learned the spell myself, if it came to a fight, I would be in a bad situation, but couldn't I just infuse more mana into the tome, that way I could keep casting.
"Mana Infusion is not such a simple process. To infuse a tome with mana, one must first know exactly how much mana is needed for each spell. Then you must decide how many times you wish to utilize each spell. If you want to use a certain spell a multiple number of times, you must infuse the amount of mana needed for that many uses. However, if you add to much mana the tome itself may not be able to handle the
strain. Worst case scenario, the tome might explode.
“Sounds rough.”
“The process becomes very tedious over time, but if you learn the spell and since your mana restores in time, you could unleash as many time as you need, just at a much slower rate, plus you can put as much mana into any spell you’ve learned, making the most basic of spells, something to be fear.
"So basically tomes let me spam a certain spell as long as it has enough mana, while if I learn the spell, I could unleash the spell as many times as I want, just really slowly, but with a lot more punch.
Nathan thought that the tome was a better choice, sure the mana would run out, but if you were in a fight, the one to finish their incantation first would be victorious and with no casting time, unless they prepared ahead of time he wouldn’t lose. In addition, his attack was sixty, for a level one he thought that was pretty strong, but he couldn’t deduce anything until he sees someone else’s stats.
"It is as you say, however what I understand from your actions, you don’t have any grandeur reason for using magic, it just that you want to cast a spell."
"Well yeah, that's all I want to do, I learn would I need to later but right now, just want to try to throw a fireball."
Iris stopped and turned to a section of books.
"Well then, here is the section for fire magic tomes. Each tome has its own unique spells within the domain of fire, from body enhancing to summoning, though you can't use any spell above student level while in the study."
“Huh, why not?”
“I do not know the reason, just that the study prevents it.
" Okay, that's fine, as long as I can cast a spell."
Iris handed Nathan a book, it was still in a language he could not read. According to Iris, all he needed was to recite the spells name, to unleash it, which she relayed to him. Nathan placed a hand out in front of him, he aimed it at the back wall, as far away from the books as he could.
"Flare”
To their surprise huge fireball took form in front of Nathan. Before they could react, the massive object sped down the aisle and then exploded with a force that shook the shelves. The wall had become black where the fireball had struck. The charred area was roughly the size of one bookshelf. Nathan and Iris looked at the wall, then to Nathan's hand, then once more at the wall.
"…................Iris?"
"Yes "Hero"?"
"That was a student class spell, right?
"It is as you say."
"…...................Hollee shit."

Leftover Apocalypse
[Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] This is a story about the newly-adult Calliope Smith having a terrible day that ends in her getting mysteriously teleported from Phoenix, Arizona to a fantasy world where her life is in constant danger. She considers this an upgrade. Someone evil is looking for her, and she doesn't know why. Someone who seems to know a lot about her has promised they'll help her, but she doesn't know who they are. All that matters to Callie is that magic is real and one way or another she's going to learn it. The end of the world is coming up, sure, but Callie won't need to worry about that. In fact, by the time she even finds out about it one of the doomsday devices will already be destroyed, and the authorities will be well on the way to dealing with the other one. It's fine. Everything will be smooth sailing. Almost certainly. Probably. Chapters are usually about 2500-3500 words, and the goal is to post 2-3 per week but I sometimes get busy or have some writers block. It's your standard portal fantasy / Isekai premise, but unlike some the main character's time on Earth and how she got pulled into another world will (eventually) be explored. Some slight GameLit-feeling stuff later, no menus or level-ups but there's something suspiciously like a skill tree when the magic system gets going. No number crunching, and while the main character will get to do some silly stuff she won't be a god like in some fics (and will in fact spend a lot of time being badly outclassed by her enemies). Some reader interaction, ranging from adding to the worldbuilding to occasionally making big important decisions about skill progression. Please note that the main character is flawed and impulsive, and will make some stupid decisions. That's part of the story, but I get that it's not for everyone. Trigger Warnings: Foster care system references, crappy parenting. Some mental health adjacent stuff, specifically the main character has some issues where she experiences varying levels of empathy and emotional vulnerability depending on the day (it's complicated and not meant to portray any real-world conditions). Occasional violence including mention of death and grievous bodily harm, but no detailed descriptions of gore.

There is only one problem: she may be losing control of her abilities. Sixteen years after a global pandemic devastated the earth’s population, the lines in the old United States have been drawn between the Cheyenne Directorate in Colorado and the New England Alliance on the East Coast. The Directorate, of which Alexandra is a part, is a small but powerful organization dedicated to returning the country to its former glory. However, when a diplomatic mission to the New England Alliance goes wrong, Alexandra finds herself at the center of a bloody civil war. Battles are fought on the old highways and in dilapidated towns and once-great cities. And as the conflict escalates, all of North America faces the threat of being burnt away by nuclear fire. Against this backdrop of war, Alexandra tries to uncover the long-hidden secrets behind the plague, her abilities, and the two men fighting to decide the fate of the United States - Henry Bedford, Alexandra's father and leader of the Directorate, and John Martin, the mysterious figure at the heart of the New England Alliance who may hold the key to everything she seeks. None of this will matter, however, unless Alexandra can prevent the power growing inside her from taking over and consuming the very world she is fighting to save. Author's Notes: I appreciate you taking a look at my novel, The Girl from the Mountain. If you're a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, military thrillers, and/or cosmic horror, I think you'll enjoy this story. I completed the novel's first draft back in 2011 and made significant changes in 2016. Since then, I've more-or-less sat on the manuscript while working on other projects. Thanks to a bit of prodding, I've decided to send this story out into the wild with some touch-ups and additional revisions. I welcome any comments or criticisms, and I hope you enjoy The Girl from the Mountain!
