《Crows Feast》Stats and Stuff

Even before i opened my eyes i could tell that i wasnt in my room anymore thanks to the light breeze brushing over me.
I breathed in and slowly opened my eyes.
Before me was a town akin to that of the european medieval era. Stone houses with red tilted roofs and chimneys. A splattering of water behind me let me guess there was a fountain as a starting point like in many games before. And as I expected I wasn't the only one suddenly appearing out of nowhere. There were still people appearing while I already took a look around.
A lot of people were dumbfounded by the scenery or looked at there reflection in the fountain.
Others didn't seem so shocked about this revelation instead they were already checking there menus.
Seeing that I also figured I should open the menu. Since there was no button for it I just thought the word [Menu] and "Boom" there it was. In the same
colors as the pop up windows before a light blue with dark blue borders. There was the [Settings] Option and the [Log Out] Option.
Like any reasonable person I opened the Settings immediately and looked trough the options there. There wasn't much to play around with since the graphics were set and there wasn't a setting for buttons. Neither was there a language or anything else. To be serious there was only one thing I could personally change. And that was what baffled me the most.
There was a Pain Meter. I suspected that the game would somehow stimulate my nerves and fake pain when I was hit in the game. That was pretty awesome and scary at the same time.
The Pain Meter was currently set on 10% Real Pain.
´So I would have 10% of the pain I would receive in the Real world from the same wound.
This seemed like a reasonable amount since in no game you should think of dying like its nothing.´
I pinched my arm and although a bit numb I could definitely feel the pain. I then tested how far I could turn up the Pain Meter and was surprised that it only went up to 20%. Again a reasonable amount since People could easily pass out if the pain was to intense. I turned it the other way as well and found out that it stopped going down at 5%. Again Logical since why build a pain Meter if you could just turn it off completely.

I put it onto 10% for the beginning and closed the Menu.
Taru: "Ok. Another try."
I rubbed my hands together and this time said [Status Window].

I was stunned at all the 0´s in my status window but realized that I was just a level 0 Character after all. I shouldn't expect to much. Now for all the states I didn't know.
First there was [Memory]. As I clicked at it, it showed a small help button to its right. As I clicked on said one a bigger window appeared explaining what it meant.
Memory is the amount of EXP you already gathered trough the various means of this world.
You will lose Memory upon death.
Next followed [Wisdom] and [Intelligence] as well as [Toughness]. While I did understand what they were I didn't know why I had non of them. Normally they would be at least on 1 but I started with non. And surely I wasn't the only one. A lot of people had processed past the first shock and now looked at the status window more then a little confused.
Since I figured that this was simply a game decision I didn't sweat it and instead moved on to check my gear. I wore the same white short sleeved shirt, brown leather trousers and brown boots as everyone else and guessed that this was the starting gear.
But I wanted to see for myself what the gear had to offer so I tried to summon a gear window. But again there was no button for that. So i instead said "Gear" but nothing happened.
So I stood around a bit confused lEven ooking around if anyone else actually figured it out.
As I watched a short guy that just looked at his shirt and then startled looked into the air before him I figured out what I had to do. I pulled the end of my shirt away from my body and looked at it intensely. Only to have the game teach me that I don't have to stare at it super intensely as a gear window popped up a second after I looked at my shirt.

The only thing that surprised me was the Durability which seemed to be quite high. Of course I had no reference if that number was high or not but I could guess it.
´Why? You may ask. Which I answer with. Wouldn't it be weird to run around fighting monsters in your underwear? If by choice or because your equipment breaks doesn't matter right now.
Although I am damm sure there are bound to be some crazy guys, or girls for that matter out there how are going to fight in there underwear just for fun.´
But anyway. I figured since I had no Physical protection nor Magical protection in my status window that my other equipment also amounted to 0 in those areas.
Strapped to my trouser was a belt with quite a lot of small bags attached to it and still some room to spare. But that accounted only for the right side.
For on the other side of my belt already feeling heavy and dangerous was a sheathed sword with a simple black leather hilt.
It looked so inviting that I couldn't help myself but firmly lay my hand around it before slowly, dramatically drawing it. It was a beauty to behold seeing the midday sunrays split on the polished double edged 2 Feet long blade of the sword.
It wasn't as heavy as I expected but rather felt like my possibilities I had with that weapon weight me down. I held it before my face brushing over it with two fingers.

And like that the game hit me square in the face with a few more things I didn't know. But After a bit of thinking and exhausting all help buttons there were, I also managed to take that hurdle.
So firstly there were different types of equipment. They rated from [Novice Equipment] like my shirt and trousers to the next rank of [Normal Equipment] like my sword till up to [Cursed Equipment]. There were as many Equipment ranks as scaling Ranks. And that was the next thing.
Scaling basically meant that the weapons attack power increases with status points. Like [Physical Scaling] would raise the [Physical Damage] the Weapon did.
[Physical Scaling] came from two stats. One was [Strength] and the other was [Agility]. Going away from what weapon you hold it might increase more when you level a specific stat. Like a Hammer growing stronger when you scale [Strength] more then [Agility]. The Sword was a balanced weapon so it didn't matter what you leveled up since both would increase it for the same amount.
Different to that was the [Magical Scaling]. It came only from the stat [Intelligence]. [Magical Scaling] increased the magic damage a weapon did.
The Help window also stated that magic damage ignored all armor if it wasn't correctly meant against magic. Armor that deflected Magic damage however was comparable weak to physical attacks.
The sword had a higher [Magical Scaling] then [Physical Scaling] as at the same time doing a reasonable amount of Physical Damage from the start. Making it seem pretty awesome for a starting weapon.
After I sheathed my sword again I noticed some weird looks on me and decided not to stick around such a crowded place. Turning around to leave the [Central Town Plaza] I spotted a building that had Japanese kanjis written onto a shield hanging in front of it.
They Read [Training Hall].

Hi. Its me again. So I had a bit more time then expected this week and decided to upload another chapter. This wont mean that my Natural Schedule of one chapter per week will change just that I had a bit more time so I decided to put out another chapter.
Again I ask for any comments or criticism on my FF and hope that my English is good enough to be read by all of you.
So anyway if any of you wonder what´s up with the scaling and all it will get explained better and better the more the story progresses . You will gradually get to know more and more about the whole system and everything.
And just to make clear from where I got the basic idea. Its from my beloved Dark Souls.
I just say Praise The Sun.

The Beta Test
Our nameless narrator participates in a beta test for an early VRMMO game Meridian 60. That's not the real name but it captures the spirit of the adventure given the chronological and contextual era of the game. His character is unique and special but purely for mundane reasons and not because of any inherent or social significance. The first chapter which is mandatory to submit a story on RR serves as a bit of a prologue with some exposition, although I limited that to a reasonble level. I plan to begin releasing additional chapters starting Thursday, to align with the 48 hour submission approval process and also because I have something to do Wednesday. I haven't written anything but the summary and first chapter, nor have I plotted anything out. This is because my plan is to release roughly 34000 words a day, 10 chapters of ~12.5 pages each, for 3 days at which point the story will be complete. I'd have liked to plan for more but handling the interface tables and so forth needed for a data heavy litrpg slows down the writing process. 100k words is a bit short, a standard pre epic fantasy 300 page spec fic novel, but this is mostly a writing exercise and I am considering a longer project if I can maintain the pace. Probably do a different concept, maybe a dungeon core, over 5 days, since a 500 page novel is more common these days. Slight subversion of VRMMO stories Stat heavy/crunchy No paying your bills by gaming No out of game conspiracies No angst, interpersonal drama, or damsels/dudes in distress Schedule is 30000 words a day excepting the first chapter, a limitation of RRs fiction submission system Fantasy, high magic, male lead, no party, guild, or harem No gore, some profanity, no sexual content, and no current plans for anything traumatic
