I woke up groggily while I heard Jasmine say something repeatedly but I couldn't focus on her voice. I just felt my tongue being dry as a desert so I needed water. I tried to get up but couldn't do so. I couldn't even open my eyes. I had a major problem of cottonmouth so I tried calling.
“Water...” I said softly, almost in a whisper.
That's when I heard a child crying. I didn't notice it before but it was close by. I don't know why she is crying but my need for water made me desperate.
“Water.” I said a bit more loudly, but it came out coarse because of my dry throat.
I heard her stop crying after I said that. I waited for water but it didn't arrive. I didn't even hear any movement.
“Water...Please” I said for the 3rd time in a husky voice. My throat was starting to hurt from just speaking.
I heard the girl yell “CESARR!!!!!!” And felt something slam into me. It was probably the girl because she started crying again and the voice was very close to me.
“Can't breath.” I said. I felt her slowly getting off me.
“Cesar... * sob * Your awake!! Your finally awake. I thought you were dead! * sob * You stopped breathing. I didn't know what to do.” She said while she was heavily crying.
I didn't know why she was calling me Cesar but I didn't care. I NEEDED water.
“Water... I need water.” I demanded.
I heard her hastily get up and run. A few moments later, I heard her return.
“Let me help you sit up.” She said while she was hiccuping. Atleast she stopped crying now.
She placed a cup in my mouth and I felt heaven poring down my throat. No juice, sports-drink, or wine tasted better than the water I drank.
All too soon, the cup of water was gone and I asked for more. 4 cups of water later, I had come back to life. My body had gathered enough strength that I was able to open my eyes. The sight was one I didn't expect.
While drinking the water, my mind had come back to me. I thought that there was a malfunction in the Fusion Energy Generator and that I was alive. My weakness might have been due to the radiation. But what I saw around me didn't go with my expectations.
I wasn't in a hospital room. There was no medical equipment around me. There wasn't even anything that looked modern. It was in a wooden room that looked like it was going to fall down at any moment. There was a small table with a chair at the center of the room that looked too small for anyone to use. What caught my eyes were the arrows at the corner of the room. There was also a sewing kit but no cloths. I had many question at this point and kept them in my mind. I quickly scanned the room and there wasn't much else, just some moss.

Right beside me was the girl that had been crying. What I saw immediately made my eyes constrict and made them go into focus. She had beautiful, glossy silver hair that went down her shoulder. Shining, jade white skin without a blemish. Even with the smears on her cheeks you couldn't hide her beauty. But she had dirt in her beautiful hair. Even the cloths she wore were tattered and littered with dirt. She looked like a mess that hadn't bathed in days. But what made me go into focus was that there was only one place I knew that had this type of celestial, inhuman beauty. It was a game.
Video games had reached the virtual world on Earth. It was the one of the biggest industries in my time. I also enjoyed my fair share of them. They were a release from my stress and they even gave me ideas for my inventions. They were basically simulations of different universes with everything imaginable in them. There were many advantages to playing them, one of them was the overall beauty of the game. They had optimized how humans looked like, for all nationalities, with plenty of variety. What I saw before me, under the teary eyes, snot coming out of her nose, the dirt all over her body, the tattered and old cloths, was an oriental beauty that couldn't be part of the real world, not to mention her silver hair.
I said in my mind “Are we in a simulation or game?”
[...Negative.] was Jasmines reply. Damn. There might be technology or something else that that could surpass her senses, but it was highly unlikely. Next I asked what I thought would prove if we're in Earth or not. It would also be one of the most important questions I could ask.
“Are your limitations still in place Jasmine?”
[...Currently Limited. Overall...Negative]
... Well now that's a dilemma. I'm sure she's realized the importance of what I just asked and the answer. Now, since I'm still in control of my body, I guess she doesn't want to take over. But this is important. This means she can alter information. Since she is a part of me, she can attach herself to my entire body, each and every cell, helping me in ways I can't even imagine.
“How much control do you have over my body?” I asked Jasmine. Not because of my imaginary fears, but because I need to know her current ability and limit.
[Currently, limited to Sensory information and minor analysis. Will remove Power Saving Mode when Reserve Battery reaches 15%. Not connected to body electronically. Unable to find answer due to Power Saving Mode. Priority selection for Master. Escape Critical health status.]
I had seen she had gone into power-saving mode. It was an emergency mode when she had virtually no power, so only completes minimal tasks that are of utmost importance. When she's not connected to an external power source, she was allowed to use my body as one. Since I'm weak, I guess I don't make a good energy source for her.
Not connected to me electronically? Is she now a part of my body biologically? Like a virus? Better not call her a virus, she might actually get mad. But I had a feeling it was more than that.
Jasmines answer also created more questions. How am I still alive? Where am I? were just the major ones. I needed answers, and there was only one source of information I had, the girl beside me.
“Who are you little lady? And where am I?” I sheepishly asked.

The girl just looked at me. And then just started crying again. For the love of God, this is going nowhere. She's an emotional wreak.
This was also when I noticed my voice was different. I looked looked down at body. I didn't look like the Ed Sullivan I knew. I was thin as a stick, with frail arms, with bony fingers, and small hands.
[Mind matches Ed Sullivans. Body does not.]
[Body is malnourished. Death with-in 24 hours.]
I had even more questions but had a more pressing matter to attend to.
“Little lady, I'm very hungry and weak. Can I get something to eat?” I asked the girl.
The girl sniffled “Sure little Cesar. Sorry for crying. You've made me worry sick about you. Let me go get some soup.”
She got up and went to the opening. It led to a very small room that couldn't be called a kitchen.
I had a basic plan formed out. I didn't know where I was, but the girl knew me, and cared for me. I needed information and I was going to pretend to lose my memory to get it.
She came back with a bowl and fed me some soup. It didn't taste like anything I had ever eaten but it tasted good. I was also hungry enough to forget sanitary concerns and ingredients.
[Still malnourished but not in danger of immediate death. Taste buds confirm it's not any natural meat or ingredients found on earth.]
I told Jasmine that when we get out of power-saving mode, to treat this like a fantasy world, where biology and the laws of physics are different. This was to not be caught off guard and it was more to remind myself not get complacent and let my previous knowledge and habits hinder me. I can't let my weapon become my weakness. Even though I was dependent on her for extreme analysis, I still had my brain which I was proud of. She needed to save all the energy she can get her hands onto, while I use my brain to figure out this world. I finally had a shot at living again, and I was not willing to waste it.
“Little lady, I don't remember anything. I guess my name is Cesar huh?” I said.
The girl made a sad expression but nodded and said “My name is Lily. I'm your foster sister. Your my little brother Cesar. So don't call me little.” And beamed a beautiful smile at me. She sounds like the cheerful and cheeky type.
She went on to explain that we were orphans without anyone willing to take care of us. There seems to be superstitions of diseased children that parents throw away. I could see that with our living conditions, it was just a matter of time before that came true, us becoming diseased. That also meant that when I get better, I had to improve our living conditions.
When she was 6 years old, she wished for family and I magically appeared in front of her. She had been taking care of me since. She's 9 and I am 4 years old now. She told me that I had gone to play in the forest even when she told me not to and fell from a cliff. She found me 4 days later and carried me back home. I was weak and she told me I had stopped breathing. She thought I had died but I came back to life.
Now isn't that interesting. I survived a fall from a cliff and sustained no injuries, which is not possible with human standards, only becoming dehydrated and malnourished. But surviving for 4 days without food and water is possible. Coming back from not breathing, magically appearing in front of her were taken with a grain of salt.
It also made me respect her. She has been taking care of Cesar by herself since she was 6. She must have sacrificed a lot. She also saved me from death, so I have to repay her in the future. I still need to rely on her for the time being, but I will keep her in my heart.
I continued asking questions like which city I was in, or what year it was, but all of them made me confirm I wasn't on the earth I knew anymore.
I was in a city called Floating Cloud City. It was year 1999. We survived because Lily was able to forage from the forest. She also made arrows and simple cloths to sell to the village for some basic meat and to earn some money. The reason she makes arrows is because the protectors need them to defend the village from the Ferocious Beasts that come out from the forest. It also counts as our contributions to the village, like a tax. She also gets some rice in return so shes been doing that for our survival.
She also hinted at killing small animals for meat.
Ferocious beasts were beasts that could absorb limited amounts of heavenly energy called qi. I would have Jasmine examine this energy later. They were dangerous and there were countless amounts in the endless forest. I asked for numbers but she didn't know. They also have power rankings but she had limited knowledge of them. This was beginning to sound more and more like a game. And I had suspicions that this heavenly energy would be a lot like mana or qi mentioned in Chinese scriptures. But I knew it wasn't a game. Jasmine would have discovered if it was. So they were beasts of every kind jacked up on steroids and humanity is at war with them trying to survive. That also affected my future survival and Lilys.
They use the ancient coin system from earth as their monetary system. They use copper, silver, and gold. There are more currencies but she doesn't know what they are. Coppers are enough for poor people to survive. Basic meats, cloths, and necessities can be bought with them. 100 copper equal 1 silver coin. Silver seems to be used for more luxuries like basic weapons, armour, and better luxuries. 100 Silver is equal to 1 gold. Gold is where things get interesting. Gold is used to buy corpses of Ferocious Beasts and the materials that are contained within. It seems like every part of these beasts is highly coveted and in demand.
Protectors as she called them, were Cultivators that fought against these monsters. That's right, Cultivators. This world, or where I now lived, seemed to be based on fictional stories and folklore of Ancient China. I made sure Jasmine knew the similarities and gave her instructions to gather that information from her memory bank when she had the power. I treated information as my best weapon, and this world wouldn't change that.
Protectors were basically solders that protected people from predators. They joined the military and trained to become the strongest. The nation, or the imperial family, supports them with cultivation techniques and resources when they gain merits. These compendium of techniques allow people to absorb the heavenly energy called qi and assimilate it into the body. There are also different martial arts and techniques for killing included in these compendiums.
I guess humans aren't the top of the food chain in this world.
From the way she talked about protectors, it seems they are this worlds equivalent of nobility. Gaining merits and becoming stronger is how to get good land and be awarded with better titles. The titles cannot be passed on but have to be gained. I quite like the system, one based on merit, power and not lineage. But if it's anything like my previous world, the rich get richer, and the powerful become more powerful. I still needed more information, and have even more questions that need to be answered, but I am alive and can answer them later.
I had to accept that I was in another world, in the body of a child called Cesar Fang. Atleast I had Jasmine with me. I even thought of various possibilities with what could be done with my knowledge and Jasmines help in the future. If this world is as primitive as I think it is, than my knowledge is priceless. But I needed to assimilate this worlds knowledge into my own to make better use of my knowledge.
I was immensely happy that I had another chance to live. I had already accepted my death on Earth and this time, I won't make the same mistake of openly letting the world know of my knowledge, inventions, or Jasmine. Even with the world being different, humans are probably the same. Greedy about money and power. If the imperial family got a whiff of what I was capable of, I would be locked in a lab and squeezed for all my worth.
I hated a lot of my previous world and without Jasmine, I would have lived in the virtual world, away from reality. I am still thankful to my previous world, because I learned a lot and was able to live to some of my potential. But I died young and early, and regret it. I even liked the the environment that I helped create on earth. There was no danger and people lived good lives. But this is a new world, a new adventure. In this world, I am free to do what I want. Jasmine is here with me, and I need to figure out the energy problem she has. She'll also be a major help in fighting, analyzing, or anything else. If this was a game, I would be called a hacker and a cheat for using an A.I. But with my intellect and knowledge, I'll be fine for now.
I also had concerns about what the humans of this world were capable of. Give any intelligent civilization an energy source, and they will go far. If they were capable of reading brain waves or something similar, I was in trouble. I also didn't know the properties or effects of qi. But I forced myself to not focus on my concerns because dwelling on them wouldn't make a difference.
But my mind kept sending me warnings. I just happened to be reborn in a world where there are humans, still speak the same language, wear similar cloths? I might not have Jasmines level of analysis, but I knew this event had an astronomically low probability of happening. Hell, it was much more likely that I was put here. I didn't have enough information and didn't want to start exhausting myself thinking about it.
While my sister and I were talking, my bladder became full. I guess 4 cups of water would do that. I told her I needed to pee and she just came to me and carried me outside. I was really thin but she looked like it she was picking up 5 pounds, there wasn't even a change in her expression or any struggle. With people absorbing qi and eating food that had qi in it, I guess normal people are as strong as people with nano machines on earth. It also means I didn't need to worry too much about normal infections or disease.
When we walked out the door, I noticed it was still night outside. We were also by ourselves. There was just grass and trees around us. When the moonlight hit me, I almost let out a moan of pleasure. From my chest, I felt a cooling sensation that spread around my body. It was heavenly for my weak, frail body. I started feeling immersed in that sensation when Jasmines voice rang out.
[Energy Source Detected. Vitality increased from 0.1 to 0.2. Estimated time to recharge Reserve Battery - 100 days. Due to priority, 100% is being put into Masters body. When healthy status is achieved, 50% will go into Reserve Battery as default. Effects of energy seem to be healing. There is also slight strengthening/nourishment effect detected. No harmful effects yet detected. Will further analyze when battery reaches suitable levels.]
An ENERGY source?! The moonlight? How? Is my body composition different from my earth body so I am able to absorb the energy? Is this the heavenly energy that Lily was talking about? It's also originating from my chest area.
Before I can investigate further, I hear my sisters voice. I've already accepted that Lily was my sister and my name as Cesar.
“Brother... Do you need help peeing?” Lily asked with a slightly flushed face.
Why are you blushing. Your 9, I'm 4, mentally much older, but still physically 4. Sigh... I guess you do see sex while living in the wild. Can't sensor that from children. She's also more mature for her age because of our unusual situation, so I guess she knows the relationships between men and women. I also can't take my preconceived notions from earth and carry them here. They will most likely get me killed. I need to find out the common sense and customs of this world, just one of the many things to do.
“I'll be fine. I'm feeling much better outside. I think I can stand on my own.” I said.
She gently put me down with a worried face and I weakly stood up. Even with the miraculous cool feeling running through me, I was still weak. I slowly walk away a few feet away do go through my business. When I turn around to go back, she quickly looks away. Cute. I guess she's at the age where girls become interested in the opposite gender.
What Cesar didn't know was that although Lily had wished for family, it was a husband she had wished for. Even though she called him brother, it was just the current role they went into. He would be her husband when they grew up, she would make sure. At 6, she didn't know what husband meant but all the older, pretty girls wanted one. A husband had to be strong, had to take care and protect them. They would also have to love each other. Naturally, since she was an orphan, she had wished to be protected and loved. When he appeared before her, she thought the heavens had granted her wish. So naturally, as she grew older, she understood more and more about a husband and wife. In this dangerous world, humans matured much faster both mentally and physically and married as early as 11, though the age of 15 was more common. But they started physical relationships much earlier because humans constantly lived in death and danger.
I walked back but didn't go to the hut. I wanted to stay outside and bask in the comfortable moonlight energy. I didn't get any inside because it was blocked by the roof. That's when I stop in my tracks. It was dark inside, because there was no light. Yet I was able to see perfectly. I look around and notice that I can see as I would with sunlight. It's different because of the different shades of light, but I was able to see better than I had been in my old world. It might be caused by the moonlight I was absorbing or because of my body. I guessed it was my body causing me to see in the dark because my sister could also see in the dark. I sigh and walk to the grass. My sister follows me with a confused expression. I lay down and she lays down beside me.
“I feel much better in the moonlight than inside the hut. I'm going to sleep outside. Is that ok?” I ask, wanting her permission. I know we live beside the forest without the protection of the guards. I was angry with this worlds morals of not protecting children. But this world had a different moral compass and I needed to accept it to survive. A beast could come at any time and kill us but I had a feeling that my sister was several times stronger than I thought. She also moved with grace and charm that was on the level of nobility. Because of my previous life experiences, I knew there was more to my sister than she was telling me. Or people might just moved with that level of grace in this world.
She just nodded and I continue examining this strange occurrence with the energy. I look at my chest, where I felt the energy originate from and found a necklace. It looked like a normal necklace with a silver mirror. As I play around with it, I notice my sister looking at me.
“Even though you can't remember anything, you still play around with your imaginary necklace.” She giggled at me.
I didn't correct her. She doesn't seem to be lying and when I waved it in front of her eyes, she ignored it. I also can't seem to take it off my neck, no matter how much I try. I don't even feel it around me, which is weird. It exists but it doesn't at the same time. I have a feeling that the absorption of moonlight is not done by me but this pendant. Sigh... There's so much I don't know and can't figure out. So I ignored it for now, wished Jasmine good night, and drift off in a comfortable sleep.
Authors Note: This is going to be a very long story. I'm already having trouble with the pacing but I want character development and information thrown in the first few chapters. Next chapter is when the story really kicks off.
