《Devil Cultivator in an Ability User World》(Rewritten) Chapter 16 - Metahuman Growth Rates and Ranking

After Damien had pretty much both mentally and physically traumatized Ronan and possibly ostracizing himself from the rest of the students in the academy, he returned to his room after saying goodbye to Scarlet, Beth, and Helen.
When he returned to his room, he continued with the BMS alignment training, to his surprise it seemed that the pressure really had reset. He had to do the workout all over again and it would temper his body even further than before. After he got to 40% BMS alignment he stopped the training and went to sit on his bed to cultivate, as he looked inside himself he saw the 8 black and red flames in his body constantly nourishing his flesh and bones.
He suddenly felt a sudden impulse to circulate his Devil Qi towards two certain points in his body, both of them on his spine with one at the upper end and one towards his tailbone. As he did so, the two spots started to heat up and after 10 minutes of 'digging' in those spaces, they lit up and turned out to be nodes. This tempered his body further and increased his body's strength from 11.5 tonnes to 13.5 tonnes.
'It seems that the BMS training tempers my body and helps show me where my Devil nodes are, what a helpful training exercise. Speaking of Devil Nodes, how many do I have? The most a normal Devil Cultivator can have is 70 and they're termed as an S-Rank. Speaking of ranks, I'm 5 devil nodes off of becoming a D-Rank Devil, once I hit 15 my body will go through a qualitative change, I can't wait.'
As Damien finished thinking about his Devil Rank and his amount of Devil Nodes, he looked back at what happened today in terms of Selena and her...kissing him.
When Damien thought about it, he blushed and felt embarrassed but also warm inside.
'Wait, this is what I mean. Why am I acting like a child? While I enjoy acting my body's age, I shouldn't let a girl going through puberty get me this flushed. It's fine for me to feel happy about what Selena did but I should act a bit more like my actual age.'

As he thought this he resolutely nodded his head as he steeled his resolve to deal with his biggest enemies; Girls.
Damien spent the rest of the day either training his Fist forms and meditating on what he did wrong and correcting it, or speaking to Michael about random stuff. Until one thing in their conversation took Damien by surprise; Michael brought up girls.
"Soo Damien, you and Selena had a thing, huh?"
Slightly embarrassed by how Michael phrased it, Damien quickly answered.
"What do you mean? We're friends and she's obviously grateful for me protecting her. Besides we're between the ages of 10 and 11, we're hardly a 'thing' as say," despite him saying this, a slight blush crept across his face.
Hearing how Damien replied, Michael laughed out with a surprising hearty chuckle as he replied "Oh Damien, Oh Damien, if Selena heard you say that she'd be quite annoyed at you, stop being dense~" as soon as he said this he stiffened as he realized he'd been a bit blunt towards the end but shrugged it off as Damien deserved a wake up call in his eyes.
"Wha--! Shut up Michael, what do you know about women? Huh?!" Damien replied with a flushed face. To his brash reply, Michael looked Damien dead in the eye and spoke in a monotone voice.
"I have 2 Older Sisters."
Seeing Michael answer his question with such a monotone and deadpan expression, Damien knew that Michael knew what he was talking about. As he realized this he simply nodded his head and then continued to talk to Michael about girls and then other stuff. Until it was later in the day, they then went to go get food after meeting up with their other friends and Damien once again showed everyone how much of a glutton he was and then soon ran back off to his dorm room after saying goodbye to the others.
When he got back to his dorm room he continued to perfect his fist forms and then went to sleep.
When he woke up in the morning, he got in the shower and after he got out he got dressed and woke Michael up as they had to go to class. As Michael got up and got ready, they headed towards their classroom and when they entered they realized they were a bit early as only Scarlet was in class.

Seeing Scarlet sitting alone, Michael and Damien went and sat next to her and decided to speak to each other while they waited for the twins. After about 10 minutes the entered the room and sat down. Seeing that everyone was in the classroom and no one was absent.
Mrs. Quila finally spoke to the class, "Good morning everyone, today we're gonna be learning a little more about Metahumans and the ranks that they're separated into," as she said this, all of the class perked up because of their curiosity and interest towards this subject.
"To start off, we have to think about what metahumans are? They're something akin to an altered human, certain genes shine when compared to others in Metahumans; These are what give them their abilities. That's the only difference, truly. But then after that, they can rank up these genes through the constant use of their ability and it'll cause more mutations in them. We class these as 'Rank-Ups' and they start at D-Rank, for your information you guys are classed as unranked, and the highest rank is SS-Rank."
Hearing from Mrs. Quila that they were all classed as unranked despite having 'S+ Ranked' abilities all of the students, including Damien, were confused on what she meant. Seeing their confused expressions, Mrs. Quila smiled and answered in a calm voice.
"Calm down, calm down students, your 'S+ Ranked' abilities is less of the power they have but more of their growth potential that the ability has and the natural control you have over your ability. So, for example, any ranked ability user no matter their ability growth rate can become an SS Ranked ability user. But a user with a D-Rank growth rate will take an immeasurable time to reach SS Ranked while a user with an S+ Rank growth rate will reach it much much quicker than a D-Rank."
As everyone heard this they were enlightened on what Mrs. Quila meant before by them being unranked as they truly hadn't had any mutations to their ability genes yet.
After Mrs.Quila explained this she simply carried on about the more specific details about how metahumans can rank up. Like how they can take special medicines to increase the genes' strength and in this way, Rank-Up, but this leads to a shaky foundation where the gene could collapse on itself and the ability would either weaken or completely disappear. Because of this many people don't overindulge in these medicines and only take them when their foundations are incredibly stable.
Thinking about this Damien decided to stay away from these medicines because he didn't know how it would affect his Devil DNA and because he didn't want anything making his incredibly firm foundation shaky.
After this, the lesson went on and they learned about basic ways to increase your intimacy with your ability; most of which Damien already knew. It was along the lines of constantly using your ability, refining your control over your ability and what you can do with it and do research on your ability to see if you can take inspiration from past Metahumans who either had the same ability or something similar in effect.
Soon after this the lesson ended and headed to the cafeteria, mainly because he was hungry and totally not because of any other reason...
As Damien continued to lie to himself, him, Michael and Scarlet walked to the cafeteria with him, Michael with a sly smile and even Scarlet had a bit of a smirk on her face. Beth and Helen wanted to go train their abilities and weren't that hungry so they went back to their dorm room.
Michael and Scarlet both shook their heads almost helplessly as they were both intelligent kids and could see through Damien's intentions for going to the cafeteria. They could only follow along as they hoped they could stop Damien from doing something stupid...

I'm still writing the entirety of Volume 2. WARNINGS:-Yes, this contains LitRPG elements after a slow start, promise.-This work is incredibly Slice-of-Life heavy-Also conversation heavy-Also plot heavy (But not in that way, unfortunately)-The pacing in terms of plot is slow -(Edit after a review)- This story is also known as: I honestly don't understand what's the difference between "light" and "dark" stories. I realized that far too late, so this story is... weird. It might be light at times, and dark at times, and in all honesty, definitely has dark undertones. Oh, and prepare to be disappointed or pleased by this story; I understand that this story is polarizing, at least. Cover made by: Fei (@Chippy03966650) / Twitter

The Runners of Westal
Anya Vorian wasn't picky. She'd take any apprenticeship that came her way. She, Lori and Andrew had prepared all winter for the interviews, but when only one offer came with her name on it, she suddenly wasn't so sure that she could do it. It was hard work, for one thing. It was dirty. They were respected, certainly, but in the sort of way that one respects a skilled plumber - grateful to have the job done, but glad it isn't your arms elbow deep in dung. In short, runners were odd folk. Maybe it was time to get fast. - A first-person tale inspired by long distance running.

Sanguine
The Coles are probably the definition of a small dysfunctional family, even if they weren’t the worst in existence; they would probably be lauded as an example of the term. The Coles were a small family though. The father, Oliver Cole, was an asshole ex-football jock who bounced around in small paying jobs after wasting most of his life drinking, drugging and whoring. The daughter, Stacy Cole, was smart, but had many issues including anger, trouble with authority, and occasional suicidal thoughts, and was kicked out of many a school for disruptive behaviour. The son, Mike Cole, was innocent, and tried his best to be kind to anyone and everyone, however his own speech impediment, and slow nature only aided people to bully and belittle him, including his own father. The Coles were indeed a dysfunctional family. At least they were, until they got to the small town near the border between the United States and Canada, Sanguine. Welcome to Sanguine. You will stay. With the exception of the first chapter, each chapter only follows one character. The first chapter is the only chapter in which I will include 'Sides' where it follows a different character. This is a short Lovecraftian story, it won't go above seventeen chapters. Note: the book cover is my first attempt, it might not even remain like it is, I was just tired of seeing the standard 'no cover' thing on it.

Fateless: The Silver Lining
It has been ten years of peace for the Union since the end of the great war with the eastern barbarian tribes, yet in the cold north of the Union's land, a new threat is looming. This time, an ambitious Lord is seeking to restore the yore pride of his kin, forcing the weakened Union into yet another unwanted war, as he ramps up the ranks of his army with thieves, murderers and mercenaries.* * *The temperature inside the forge was nearly twice as high as the one outside. A black-haired girl hammered a steel ingot into the shape of a blade. The heat of the steam was draining her stamina away, but her focus remained sharp as her sweat streamed down her face. Hit after hit, for hours, the sound of the hammering steel followed the rhythm of her breathing. Exhausted, she placed the blade into the water and wiped the sweat off her face using a drenched rag. Why are they screaming? Vatra dipped the rag back in the water, twisted it, and approached the window. Her mouth opened as her world shattered again into the living nightmare she had wilfully tried to forget. She bit her lips; it wasn’t a dream. The pulse of her heart rose. A cold sweat prickled her back. A mother was running, and a child was screaming. A torrent of smoke was emerging from the roof of her neighbour. Vatra’s eyes blinked. The mother lay on the ground, a spear through her back. A torch circled in the air and landed on the roof of her workshop. In the distance, a man wearing a banner well known to the world… Fateless is a philosophical medieval dark low fantasy centered on war, militaristic campaigns and geopolitical conflicts between multiple empires. This story follows the fate of Vatra, a former slave from the eastern Nar Empire who was raised in a culture far away from her own, forced into warfare against her will, and the fate of Lanaya, an ambitious half-angel exiled from her home whose existence is seen as heresy. As they wished for peace, both chose a path opposed to one another until their fate crossed. In this story where war dictates the law, love strikes them as a poisoned balm to which they grasp for with all their might, as it is in the darkest of times that the smallest flames may burn the brightest. * * * Tome 1 already completed and available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.ca/Fateless-Silver-Hugo-Emmanuel-Simard-Wallot/dp/B09LGSH1KK Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Hugo-Emmanuel-Simard-Wallot-100547579135891/ I will publish 1 chapter per week (sometimes 2 if the chapters are too short for my liking).
