"Nice!" Kat says as I high five her.

"Boys get out! Your practice ended ten minutes ago!" Mrs. Larsen yells, and all the boys walk out.

"So, as most of you know that's Riley," she says nodding at me. They all take a look at me before turning their attention back on the coach.

"Okay, year I thought we'd try something different. Unlike other years, I'm going to watch you guys play for the first couple of practices then assign each of you your positions. That also means we might have a new captain this year."

"What?!" Kirsten practically crams. All of us stare at her questionably causing her cheeks to change colour into a rosy red," I mean... that's not fair some people have been here longer, and they deserve more."

"Kirsten you've been captain for about three years now. You should know that time does not matter, but skill does," Mrs. Larsen explains. Kirsten doesn't reply.

"Now start with five sets of suicides! Go!" coach Larsen orders. We all start running while most of us were still groaning.

Practice was awesome. I love feeling my heart race for the right reasons. I love feeling focused. And the adrenaline rush is unexplainable. Playing basketball puts a smile on my face.

"You really love basketball don't you?" Jen asks as I blow dry my hair.

"Yeah, why?"

"Because of that huge smile on your face," she laughs stating the obvious.

"Basketball gives me time to forget what's going on and just focus on one thing and that's playing. But basketball isn't the only reason for my smile. I beat your brother one on one."

"Seriously? He must've been so embarrassed," she laughs even harder. "How'd you do it? I mean how'd you beat him? Not bragging, or anything he's pretty good. He does practice day and night."

"His anger got in the way this time. If not for that I think he might've beaten me. Good thing I know how to push his buttons," I say turning off the blow drier. I wink at the mirror towards Jen. "Hey, while we're talking about your brother. What's up with him and flat balls?"

"It's a pet peeve of his. He really hates it when the balls don't have enough air in them."

"Well that's a really good thing to know," I smile. "Another thing, do you know when he practices alone?"

"Yeah around eight in the morning every Tuesdays, because he doesn't have classes that day."

"So tomorrow?" Jen nods. "I just got an idea," I grin.

"What is it?" Jen asks curiously.

"You'll find out. Just wait and watch. And, I'm going out for dinner with Kat."

"Kat?"

"Katherine, she plays on the team. She asked me if I could go out for a bite after practice and I said sure. She seems like a good person and I could use a couple of more friends," I smile.

"Okay. When will you be back?"

"I don't know. I'm going to drop off my resume at the bookstore before we go. I have a key so you don't have to stay up anyways."

"Okay."

********

I wore a long sleeved grey sweater which had a picture of Mickey mouse on it, a pair of black leggings and the classic black All Star converse.

I left the dorm, and now I'm walking towards the bookstore on campus with my resume in hand. It was still light out and a lot of people were still around.

It's getting a little cold like last night so I'm happy I choose to wear something warm. The bookstore isn't that far according to Jen the it's right beside building B.

Soon, after five minutes of walking around, I finally find it. I walk in only to be mesmerized. The store was stacked with thousands of endless books. The coolest thing was at the end was a half dome just like in old movies which had a ladder to get up to the books. This book store also had a second floor. I could tell because there was a balcony facing towards the desk which was on the right side of me.

"Hi, what can I help you with?" an old lady sitting at the desk asked.

"Oh, hi I'm just here to apply for a job," I say handing my resume over to her. She puts on her glasses which were hanging from her neck and nods her head as she reads.

"Okay. You're hired, Ms.King."

"Seriously?!" I ask shocked.

"Yes. I'll email you your schedule, can you start from Friday?"

"Yes, I can. Thank you," I say happily.

"Yes, yes," she says. "My name's Mrs. Green, but you can call me Kris short for Kristle."

"Okay," I smile. "Bye."

"I walk out happily. I stop standing in front of the main doors of building B because Kat told me she'll pick me up from here.

I check my phone to see that Kat messaged me saying she has left about two minutes ago.

"Hey, did you get anything," I hear a voice from around the corner. I walk around to listen because the voice sounded way too familiar.

"What?! Why?!" I sneak a peek around the corner, and see Heath standing there talking on the phone. He looked unusually tensed.

"No. I don't care! I'm paying you aren't I?! So stop telling me what or what not do!" he says turning the phone off and kicking the wall.

"Ugh!" he groans causing me to turn back around. For some reason this side of him scared me a lot. I was breathing heavy. Really heavy.

A car stops in front of me on the road, the window rolls down revealing Kat. I sigh in relief and literally run in.

She starts driving," Whow! What happened to you? You look like you've seen a ghost or something."

"Huh?" My hands go to my cheek which were burning hot," Um, no I just got lost so I had to run to the front. I didn't want to keep you waiting."

"Oh," she says.

"So where are we going?" I ask changing the subject.

"I was thinking Ricardo's. It's my favourite restaurant and they have the best tacos."

"Seriously? I love tacos."

"Then you're going to thank me for showing you theirs!" she declares.

********

"Oh my... Mmmm," I moan finishing up my third taco.

"Hahah told ya," Kat says."Soo?"

"Soo?" I question her question.

"How's school so far?"

"Good considering I've only had one class." I laugh at the end.

"Cool, so are you old friends with Jennifer and Kylie?"

"No, why?"

"You seem really close with them, and they're like the popular ones you know?"

"I'm Jen's roommate and no I didn't. I usually don't care about that stuff. I mean, they're really nice and fun to hang around."

"Oh," is all she has to say.

"What's up with you and Heath?"

"Nothing much. Just started off on the wrong foot and it will continue."

"Oh, but he's hot."

"I know, but that doesn't change the fact that he's an air headed man whore."

"I guess."

"So tell me somethings about you."

"I'm African American. I have a younger brother who's in middle school. My parents live in Malibu, and I love basketball that's why I came to UCLA."

"Wow nice, I'm an only child, I have no parents and I moved here from Canada."

"I'm sorry, but it must be nice having no parents."

"Eh, I wouldn't know because I've never really known what having parents feels like,"'we sit there in silence for a minute or two. I drink a glass of water. "You know I got a job at the campus?"

"Seriously? That's so good for you."

"Do you work any where?"

"No, my parents pay for everything."

"That's nice. So, do you think Kirsten will be captain again?"

"To be honest I think you should become captain, not just me, but the whole team thinks so."

"Why? I literally just joined the team, and I don't think I'm fit to become captain."

"Please, don't even. You beat the guy's captain Heath like it was no big deal you're fucking amazing," I laugh at her compliment.

"It's not funny I'm serious," she says and I stop laughing.

"I'll think about it no promises made," I fake surrender.

"Fine," she says giving up. "We should go back, it's twelve."

"Seriously? We've been here for over two hours?!" I laugh.

"Waitress can we please get the bill?" the waitress nods, and disappears behind the employees only door.

*********

Kat dropped me off in front of the girls dorm building, and left driving herself home which was off campus.

I grab my key from my side bag and open the lock to my door. I walk inside making sure to lock the door behind me.

"Hey, you're still awake?"

Jen removes her headphones. "Hey! I wanted to know what you had planned for my brother," she says devilishly. I sit next to her on the bed.

"So you told me Heath practices every Tuesday morning at eight, and that he also has a pet peeve against flat balls," I say grinning.

"Yeah so?"

"Soo, we wake up before he does, flatten every single ball in the gym, and record his reaction. The best part is we'll only leave a manual pump in the gym."

"Ohh, damn. He is going to be pissed," she says almost like she was thinking something. "This is going to be priceless!" She shrieks.

"Haha, yeah, yeah now go to sleep we're waking up at six."

"Okay! Oh and we're going to the beach first tomorrow at twelve-ish."

"Okay, I'm excited for everything."

"Good night," Jen says as I snuggle into bed after turning off the lights.

"Good night," I say.

"Hey, did you get anything?... No! I don't care! I'm paying you aren't I?! So stop telling me what or what not to do!" Heath's words kept repeating in my mind. His anger- rage was unexplainable. What is this guy hiding?

And soon I fall asleep with the thoughts.
