《Remarkable (Dance Moms Fic)》Chapter 2: Spicing up the Competition

It was a new week and the day was April 11 as everybody was in Studio A and Cathy and Vivi weren't there yet.
"Phoenix was really rough, you guys got your butts kicked, but thankfully Shane saved the day with his solo victory. Here in Chicago, you've won everything, but it is very obvious that it's a different story when you get on a plane or bus and head across the country, i've told Shane that and i've even told Skye and Lauren as well. For years and years, i've taken the kids to competitions by myself, made sure that their hair, makeup and hairpiece was just right, but these days, the mothers want to go and that is because they are revisiting their childhoods through you and that is where trouble starts." Abby told them.
"Here's the thing, my mother is the leader, you do what she says and there is conflict whenever your mothers are telling you something to do, do you get the memo?" Shane added as the girls all said yes, then he turned to Nia. "Nia, how do you think we did when we were in Phoenix this past weekend?"
"We could've improved and i need to improve on pointing my feet." Nia answered him.
"Correct, the feet, arms, shoulders and legs need tuning and those kinds of mistakes pull the group down." Abby said, she then looked over at Chloe. "Chloe, your headpiece should have stayed up, instead, it fell down and covered your face."
"MIss Abby, that was my fault and my fault only, i will make sure it stays on next time." Chloe told Abby, who nodded.
"Great. Ok, this new group routine is going to be called Electricity and Maddie, since you did great this past weekend and your mother didn't give me or my son any trouble, you're gonna be front and center for the routine and we've got three solos, Maddie you'll be doing one of the solos and that is named Cry, Chloe, you'll be doing the other solo named Baby Mine and Shane, your routine is going to be called Dangerous. We know you're Dangerous, but in a good way."
"He sure is." Kelly stated.
"We'll be heading to StarQuest in Bloomington, Illinois this weekend. All right, everybody up. Let's start this routine. Moms, your dismissed." Abby said as the moms went into the observation room and the girls got up and the moms watched like usual.
"Here we are again." Christi said. "Like a bunch of donkeys."
"You heard that dog in there?" Kelly asked them, referring about Abby and began to mock her. "'Be Like Maddie', Be Like Maddie'."
Melissa rolled her eyes as she turned to Kelly.

"Nia's at the bottom of the pyramid and that isn't right." Holly interjected.
"Brooke is too along with Mackenzie." Kelly stated.
"I predict that Abby is setting up another Maddie-Chloe showdown and i know Abby will be working with Maddie before she heads onstage and it'll be me in the hallway with my daughter." Christi predicted. "That's how it is, the focus is on Maddie."
"Maybe Shane could help Chloe." Melissa suggested.
"Fair enough." Christi replied, then they talked about Cathy and Vivi after Melissa told the other moms about them
It was three days prior to competition and that was the day the girls were going to do costume fitting in Studio C and the moms were in there sitting down and Shane, Lauren and Skye were in there as well and in front of them was a pedestal as Abby opened the door and coming in was Nia as Holly was laughing at the costume she was in and it was a shiny turquoise shorts, shiny black, turquoise top, collar like choker, black trip and knee high socks that were two inches above the knee with turqouise bows on them.
"Goodness gracious." Skye commented. "That's a little too skimpy in my book.
"Mom, are you serious?" Lauren muttered under her breath at the sight of how the costume for the group dance was looking like.
"Question, where is the rest of her costume?" Holly asked.
"That's it. We need to spice it up." Abby responded.
"It's obvious that we're going with skin to win." Christi said.
"That's what it looks like, Christi." Shane commented.
"Yes. So the hairstyle is french twist with the curls on top."
"How are the socks being worn?" Melissa wondered.
"The socks are going to be two inches above the knee with bare legs and use your double stick lingerie tape." Abby replied as the moms were cringing,
"Mom, no disrespect and all, but it's obvious the judges aren't gonna like this and i thought the costumes from last week were bad, but these make those look decent." Shane told his mother.
"Shane, i got this." Abby told her son, then Paige, Chloe, Brooke and Maddie were next, then Cathy and Vivi arrived at the studio and Abby began to work with Vivi as she was gonna do a duet with Mackenzie called Why Can't We Be Friends and later, the moms talked to Cathy after introducing themselves and through the next two days, Maddie, Chloe and Shane's solos were rehearsed as Lauren and Skye were in classes.
(Shane's costume for Dangerous: Flat foil lycra and spandex t-shirt with wavy sequin mesh front pocket, spandex pants with side stripes.)
It was the morning of competition and in the parking lot of the studio, the bus was about to leave as everyone was sitting in their seats until Shane saw some bags that were still on the parking lot.

"Who's bags are those?" Shane asked.
"That's mine." Cathy answered him as she got off the bus and headed to her bags and got them in the luggage compartment and with that, the driver began driving to Bloomington by taking the I-294 before switching to the I-55 when they were in Burr Ridge.
"Bus driver!" Abby called to the driver. "Can you hear me? Why didn't you go on the I-94 and switch to the I-55 after Roosevelt Road? we could've avoided the tolls that way!"
The moms were laughing.
"Now she's telling the bus driver how to drive." Kelly commented.
"I'm Bus Sick." Cathy complained. "Already."
"You're kidding, right?" Christi said.
"No." Cathy stated.
"Cathy, this is how we do it when it comes to being a member of mom's studio." Lauren told her.
"Yeah." Skye commented as Abby smiled at her two daughters telling Cathy how things work in the ALDC, then Christi called Chloe over to start on her makeup and hair and Melissa did the same thing by calling Maddie.
"Driver, be careful, makeup is being done." Shane told the driver. "Mom, who's gonna go first at the competition?"
"You are, so immediately when we arrive, you start putting your costume on as you've already put your long hair in a ponytail." Abby informed.
"All righty and i'm gonna stretch when we get backstage."
"Good."
"Is it hot in here or is it just me?" Cathy wondered.
"It's you." Holly said and Maddie went into the bus bathroom and changed into her costume, then Chloe did the same thing when Maddie was done. Once Chloe was done, Shane changed into his costume.
"Cool costume, Shanester." Brooke complimented.
"Thanks." Shane said as Abby, Gianna, Lauren, Skye, the moms and girls all complimented him and around 9:40, the bus arrived in Bloomington, a downstate town in Illinois and pulled up to the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts, where StarQuest was being held at and as they entered, Shane, Maddie and Chloe went to the wings of the stage.
"Next in the Teen Soloist Division, Shane from the Abby Lee Dance Company with Dangerous!" Shane heard his routine be called and he headed on the stage and was standing on the stage, once the music began playing, he went into dance mode and he was dancing like he never danced before and he nailed his moves and at the end, he posed and the crowd cheered as he headed off stage and got hugs from Maddie and Chloe.
"Fantastic, Shane Train!" Maddie exclaimed.
"What Maddie said!" Chloe stated.
"Thanks, you two. I know you'll be fantastic too." Shane replied.
"Thanks." Chloe and Maddie both told him as Abby approached her son and gave him a hug and Skye and Lauren were with her too.
"You were marvelous!" Abby exclaimed.
"Thanks, mom."
"Bro, you rocked it!" Skye added.
"Yeah, If you keep on dancing well like this, you might end up going out on top with an undefeated season!" Lauren told her older brother.
"You never know, i might have to lose at one point." Shane admitted.
"True." Abby stated. "But then again, you might not lose with the hard work you've been putting in."
"Coming up in the junior soloist division is Chloe from the Abby Lee Dance Company with Baby Mine." Chloe went on to the stage and she did really well with her solo and she did a pose at the end and winked, then she left the stage and met up with her mother in the mezzanine as Shane as Abby, Shane, Lauren and Skye approached them.
"Good job." Abby complimented to Chloe. "Chloe, watch your feet on the end that we worked on. The part where you walked on to the stage, otherwise, i thought it was good."
Maddie got the finishing touches on her hair and makeup and she headed to the stage.
"Up next in our Petite Solo division is Maddie from the Abby Lee Dance Company with Cry!" Maddie went on to the stage and she was marvelous on the stage with her solo and at the end, she posed and next were the solo awards and first was the teen soloist award and places 10 through 2 passed by and first place was next.
"Our first place overall teen soloist winner is Dangerous!" Shane got up and received his award and it was his second straight victory as Abby, Gianna, Skye, Lauren, Skye, the moms and girls cheered and Chloe got first in the junior soloist division and Maddie got first in the petite soloist division. Mackenzie and Vivi's duet was next and once that was done, the group was next as Shane, Mackenzie and Vivi were sitting in the audience with Abby, Gianna, Skye, Lauren and the moms.
"Coming up in our junior small group division is Electricity!" Maddie, Chloe, Brooke, Paige and Nia all walked on the stage and the moves they did weren't appropriate as the audience cringed at that and it was obvious that it wasn't gonna end well and at the end, they posed and to no one's surprise, the group didn't place and Holly and Christi had a heated conversation with Abby about the group routine and everybody went back home to Skokie.

Apparently, even heaven had the odd clerical error. Which was not something Nathaniel Miller would have expected, and yet, that seemed to be exactly what had happened to him. No one, however, had specified how different this world would be from his, sure they had said the tech would be a little older, and there were other small anomalies. But no one had seen fit to let him know that older meant medieval, and those small anomalies mentioned? They probably referred to all the fantasy elements and magic that seemed to be part of this world. Still, he was determined to do better this time around, after all, chances like this were next to unheard of...

There is only one problem: she may be losing control of her abilities. Sixteen years after a global pandemic devastated the earth’s population, the lines in the old United States have been drawn between the Cheyenne Directorate in Colorado and the New England Alliance on the East Coast. The Directorate, of which Alexandra is a part, is a small but powerful organization dedicated to returning the country to its former glory. However, when a diplomatic mission to the New England Alliance goes wrong, Alexandra finds herself at the center of a bloody civil war. Battles are fought on the old highways and in dilapidated towns and once-great cities. And as the conflict escalates, all of North America faces the threat of being burnt away by nuclear fire. Against this backdrop of war, Alexandra tries to uncover the long-hidden secrets behind the plague, her abilities, and the two men fighting to decide the fate of the United States - Henry Bedford, Alexandra's father and leader of the Directorate, and John Martin, the mysterious figure at the heart of the New England Alliance who may hold the key to everything she seeks. None of this will matter, however, unless Alexandra can prevent the power growing inside her from taking over and consuming the very world she is fighting to save. Author's Notes: I appreciate you taking a look at my novel, The Girl from the Mountain. If you're a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, military thrillers, and/or cosmic horror, I think you'll enjoy this story. I completed the novel's first draft back in 2011 and made significant changes in 2016. Since then, I've more-or-less sat on the manuscript while working on other projects. Thanks to a bit of prodding, I've decided to send this story out into the wild with some touch-ups and additional revisions. I welcome any comments or criticisms, and I hope you enjoy The Girl from the Mountain!
