《Breathing ∞ Kol Mikaelson [1]》[11]

"I must admit, love, you have a certain amount of flare." Klaus announced as he and Emma came to stand together once again. Emma was slightly surprised by the fact that their interactions continued on. But then again, they were in the same boat, neither of them really had any friends to entertain them at this party.

"Well, it's not like he didn't give me content to work with. I mean, seriously, Elena was there when I saw Rebekah vamp out. How do they forget to mention I know?" Emma questioned with a shake of her head, her eyes scanning through the crowd in search of familiar faces of the Scooby gang, but the only one she could see was Bonnie.

"Perhaps they underestimate you, thinking you've been compelled to forget." Klaus suggested, using it as a chance to bring up one more thing he'd been wondering. "It is what would be expected of Rebekah, so how come she didn't?"

"I suppose out of the kindness of her heart. Knowing helps me do more than just survive." Emma answered, not revealing the same amount of things she'd told Rebekah to Klaus. She doubted he'd be willing to busy himself with helping her discover the truth about her father. She also knew Rebekah couldn't compel her either, due to the vervain in her system. The blonde had, surprisingly enough, even admitted to trying on the night of the Bonfire. "So, what's next? I'd like to mention I'm not up for ripping throats and hearts out."

Emma's words made Klaus chuckle as he motioned for her to walk alongside him, heading towards the house. Curious to know where he was going, Emma followed. She hadn't really expected him to tell her more. Her question was offering her a win-win situation; if he did, she'd have more information, possibly leading to knowing what happened to Rebekah, if not, he'd probably go off on his own soon enough, leaving her with a chance to leave as well. Get herself out of there before shit hit the fan. Klaus' plan didn't seem to include that as he led her over to a table set up with red cups aimed at playing beer pong.

"How about a game while we wait for the guest of honour?" Klaus offered, Emma responding by raising an eyebrow at him. When you think of a thousand-year-old vampire-werewolf hybrid, you don't really imagine them playing beer pong in their free time.

"I don't drink." She pointed out. Perhaps she'd be willing to play if she had any affinity towards beer, or any type of alcohol for that matter, but she didn't. Also, as if sending her a small message, she could feel the tip of her keys as she readjusted her hold on the small bag in her hands; she was driving back home.

"No worries, Tony can drink in your place." Klaus announced, pointing to one of the hybrids that have subtly gathered around them without Emma even noticing their approach. She reminded herself they were under Klaus' control, and he had no reason to turn them on her.

"What a terrific use of all-powerful supernatural beings." She commented light-heartedly, making Klaus smile while the hybrid he's said would drink for her, Tony laughed in amusement.

"Oh, I don't mind, not at all." He said reassuringly, making Emma glance at Klaus, the hybrid's eyes tasing and daring her to try her skill against him. Emma knew she'd lose, after all, she didn't have enhanced sight or reflexes that he did, but with the drinking option removed, it did sound fun.

"Ladies first." Klaus announced as he saw her shrug her shoulders, moving over to stand on the other end of the table. His hand extended to her, handing her the ping pong ball, but as she reached for it, his fist closed around it as he spoke again. "Shall we make it more interesting, since you're not drinking, instead you answer a question whenever I succeed?"

"You mean, every time, right?" Emma wasn't about to play dumb for the sake of seeming confident and pretending as if she thought she'd do well against him. It was a good thing she wasn't the competitive kind when it came to trivial games. "Alright, Klaus, and do I get the same privilege?"

"It depends on the question." Klaus pointed out, rising a glass to her before taking a sip of whatever was inside. Emma doubted it was the same cheap beer that everyone else at the party was provided with.

With a small smile, Emma shook her head before finally shifting her focus away from Klaus and instead to one of the cups on his side of the table. She may not have been a vampire, but that didn't mean she was completely uncoordinated. Which obviously showed as she threw the ball. It kicked off of the table and right into one of the cups, prompting Klaus to reach for it as he nodded his head in approval.

"What was your favourite time period you lived in?" Emma knew going in for the tough questions right away, for the ones involving all the drama unfolding within this town, would be unwise. It would just set off his paranoia again, thinking she was digging for something specific about his plans only to betray him later. So, she chose an easy question instead. And it wasn't like she wasn't interested.

"The 1800s." Klaus admitted with a smile. Emma could remember Rebekah telling her it was a peaceful time when they lived in New Orleans after it had been built and perfected. It seemed both Mikaelsons had a soft spot for the city. "My turn." With the question answered, Klaus took the ball into his hands, a mischievous smile on his face as he prepared his shot. And within seconds, the ball landed into one of the cups in front of Emma.

"Do I still have to-" Tony went to ask, probably unsure if he still had to drink in Emma's place considering the drinking component seemed to be completely erased from the game they were playing. However, before he could finish his own, Klaus asked his question.

"Are you on vervain, Emma?" He asked, making a small smirk appear on the brunette's face. Of course he'd want to know, it fell in place with his 'depends on the question' strategy. Her answer would let him know how much he could erase from her memory, and how easy she'd be to handle.

"I am." Emma said, telling the truth because sooner or later he'd know anyways, best be from her. From the corner of her eye she did see the small pout come over Tony's face. Without breaking eye contact with Klaus, Emma took the ball from the cup before handing it to Tony who very obviously wanted what was inside, even if the rules no longer demanded it.

"Who put you on it?" Klaus asked, but of course, Emma knew better than that. With a small tsk, she shook her head.

"That wasn't the deal, Klaus. One question per shot. Wait your turn." Emma scolded confidently, waiting to see what his reaction would be. The amused look never left his face, and instead, he simply motioned for her to take her shot. Which she did, and once again, the ball landed in his cup.

"For someone who doesn't drink, you seem very good at this game." Klaus commented. He was expecting to get all of the shots himself, but he wasn't expecting her to so skilfully land each one as well.

"Why the need for so many hybrids?" Emma asked, another question she was curious to know an answer to. She had her own theories but wanted to see what he'd say. And she'd made sure to leave the question quite open. While it was digging deeper, it didn't require of him to reveal his whole master plan. It was a simple, innocent question that would help her figure out more about the man standing across the table.

"Power, protection, security, take your pick, love." Klaus said calmly.

"You're already indestructible." Emma pointed out. Along with everything else she'd told her, Rebekah did share with Emma how each of the supernatural beings around here could be killed, if she ever found herself in trouble. But she also knew that the Originals were exempt from those ways.

"It's always good to be even more indestructible." Klaus said simply, holding his cards close to his chest. Emma pressed no further, simply nodding her head as he did have a point. With a motion of her hand, she allowed him to take his shot, which of course, once again landed in a cup. With his turn to ask a question, Klaus sent Emma a pointed look, making her believe he wanted an answer to the question he wasn't allowed to ask the last time.

"My mother, she's the one who put me on vervain. I don't know how or when, or how she knew, but she did it." Emma answered openly. A smile came over Klaus' face, one that Emma couldn't really decipher the cause for, making her brows furrow in confusion.

"That wasn't my question, love." Klaus shared, making Emma shake her head at herself. He'd played her; gotten an answer he wanted while not actually punching in a question. Meaning, by their rules, he was allowed to ask something else and obtain two answers for the price of one. And while slightly annoying, Emma still appreciated the strategy. It's something she herself would have done.

"What is your question?" Emma arched her eyebrow expectantly, curious to know what would come next. And Klaus was about to ask it, however, was interrupted as one of his hybrids came over to his side. Emma remembered her name to be Mindy, one of the hybrids Klaus had pointed out during his conversation with Tyler. Emma couldn't hear what Mindy told Klaus, but his reply was louder.

"Well, tell my visitor I'm on the brink of victory here." The comment made Emma send him a small glare, it wasn't as if they were playing towards some victory, they were playing for questions. So, in a way, perhaps she should wonder what kind of question he would have asked instead.

"He said his name is Mikael." Mindy shared, and the way the expression on Klaus' face changed was unmissable. And while it did, Emma started connecting the many separate pieces of information she had, making them all fit into one big piece.

"I'm afraid my question will have to wait then, mustn't keep him waiting." Klaus announced, starting to step away from the table as he instructed his hybrids on what to do before he addressed Tony specifically. "Tony, ensure Emma here joins the rest of the party. The new girl shouldn't stick to only one person all night." Klaus said, more like demanded, obviously knowing Emma would be curious enough to stay were she not forced to leave.

At first she let Tony lead her through the house, slowly noticing everything around them get deadly silent. The house emptied out, and even in the back, the party seemed to quiet down somewhat. Emma wasn't too surprised; it was to be expected. However, what did surprise her was the way in which Tony suddenly diverted from their course. The way he walked away from her, without saying a single word, the dazed look in his eyes made it seem as if he were sleepwalking or something.

For a moment, Emma stood still, watching him go. Everything she had guessed, overheard or learned throughout the night swarmed through her mind. Rebekah missing, Stefan and Klaus' conversation mentioning Klaus' father (and based on what she knew about old naming customs, it wasn't hard to guess that the visitor Mikael was Klaus' father)... Emma could be blind, and she'd still be able to see something was very off. So while she knew it probably wasn't the smartest idea, with Tony gone, Emma turned back, walking to where she'd left Klaus.
