A/N: reader has been best friends with Gilbert but had to move away. Yet when they get word of his dad's death they go to him. If you feel like crying listen to bootstraps cover of stand by me. Sorry if it sucks wrote this at 2 in the morning. Don't like it, don't read it.

Today was the day that Gilbert was going to bury his father. He honestly didn't know if he could do it or not. If he had the strength to walk to the grave. Gilbert needed you, he needed you so badly. Whenever something bad happened you were there. When he first found out his dad was sick you were there. The day his father told him that his mother died giving birth to him you were there. You stood by Gilbert, and he needed you to stand by him now. But you were gone moved away five months ago due to your father's job. He had sent a letter hoping you would make it. Yet he didn't get a response to his letter so he had no choice but do it alone. Or so he thought.

You barged into his room which makes Gilbert abruptly stand up." You're here." he chokes out trying not to break down." Don't you dare try to hold your emotions Gilbert Blythe." He clenches his jaw looking at the floor boards. You walk over to him placing both hands on his face making him look at you." Just let it go," you whisper. With those words said Gilbert collapse to his knees in your arms. You hold Gilbert as he cries into your shoulder holding him tightly." You will not do this alone today Gilbert. Like I always have I will stand by you." You say. After a ten minutes of Gilbert crying along with another ten to slightly calm him down more he is finally ready.

It is customary for family only to walk at the front. But to Gilbert you were family the only family he had left. Also there was no way you were going to let him walk alone. So you took his hand, treading through the snow together. Not once did you leave his side not when they did the service, or when they went back to the house, or that night. Gilbert didn't have to say it out loud but he was thankful. Thankful for always having you to stand by him.
