《Metanoia》Chapter 17

Fugo looked at the large map while you both sat in a small boat you had rented. Neither of you speaking. Your eyes and nose were red from crying and you leaned against Fugo for support.

There was no cheery attitude. No annoyed Abbacchio and no laughing Narancia. No Giorno who was a more familiar face than the others. Mista was gone. That meant no more stupid pick up lines and he wasn't there to not so subtly hit on you. No powerful leadership from Bruno or the feeling of being safe and comforted and lastly no Trish to sit next to you.

What you did have was Fugo. He was logical and smart. He kept himself calm in most situations and was there for you.

You sniffed and took your phone out and continued the music. Picking up where you left off with him, before he was ordered away by Trish, and turned the volume up a bit so you could hear it over the sound of the engine.

Narancia and Mista were kicking and stomping on a man in a white suit while he was on the ground. Only for Abbacchio to join into moments later after he finished a sip of his wine. All three of them kicking the man harshly.

All while Trish sat alone curled up in a chair, looking at her wrist that had a zipper on it, calming down from her tears.

Small Flashback -

Bruno had explained where you and Fugo were and struggled to look her in the eyes as he did so. He couldn't face her knowing she would become heartbroken so he left her to herself. As he left she broke out into violent sobs.

Even though she was in the turtle she could still be heard. The team listened to her cries and her sobs. She was speaking through her tears but they could only hear her repeating your name over and over again.

Trish was on her hands and knees on the floor. Her tears falling onto the floor. Crying out your name and for you to come back. The last time she saw you was when Bruno was leading her to the church. She wanted to see you again.

Some would call it foolish to fall for someone so easily and quickly. She didn't care, she never cared for men and she couldn't remember a woman she cared for as passionately as she did for you.

"I want you back, Y/n please come back I want to see you again."

She weakly hit her fist against the floor as she cried for you.

"Please Y/n please..."

Flashback end -

Fugo brought the boat near the walkway to park it and you leaned off him so he could work properly. He took the rope and tied the boat up, he knotted it up and you watched as he hopped off the boat and onto the sidewalk.

You turned your music off and stood up from your spot on the boat, putting your phone back into your pocket and looking at hand being held out to you. Fugo had his hand out for you to take to help you off the boat.

You wanted to smile but the whole situation was too depressing to be happy go lucky. You took his hand and he helped you out of the boat and onto the walkway to stand next to him. Neither of you said anything and Fugo started to walk to the cafe with you following him and walking by his side.

It felt like fifteen minutes had passed and your feet were starting to get tied. That may sound pathetic after fifteen minutes but crying took a lot out of you and you were walking on an empty stomach. You stopped walking when you noticed Fugo had stopped. A frown was settled on his lips and he pulled the map out.

"It shouldn't be taking this long."

You stepped closer to him and looked over his shoulder and leaned on him slightly. It didn't suit you. The sad expression you wore.

"This is an old map, it's probably outdated and it's possible the cafe isn't even here anymore, that might be why we haven't seen it yet."

You reached out your hand and held the corner of the map. Pointing out the date written in tiny font to Fugo.

Your voice, much like your face, was dripping with sadness. He looked down at the fine print in the corner of the map. Looking at it and growling while you leaned away and watched him.

"That boat guy ripped us off! First, the gas tank wasn't completely full and he gave us an outdated map! I'm not returning that boat! He's not getting that trashy boat back."

Fugo crumpled up the map angrily and threw it at a nearby trash can, he didn't make it so you walked to it and put the map in the trash can properly.

"We can just walk around and find another restaurant or cafe. Venezia is a beautiful city so we could enjoy it for a while looking for somewhere to eat."

You didn't look at him but walked to his side. Despite your words and saying that you could both enjoy it you didn't feel like you couldn't enjoy anything at the moment. His anger and annoyance started to dissolve but his frown was still present. Your voice was still beautiful but soaked in sadness. Something Fugo couldn't quite describe. Beautiful sadness. If that were to make any sense.

"That's better than that map."

You nodded in response and started to walk down a walk away with no specific destination in mind. Fugo walked beside you in the same silence that was always there. You slowly took his hand to hold for comfort and squeezed his hand a bit. You didn't look at him and he didn't look at you and the silence remained.

The city was beautiful. It's beauty combine with the comfort you felt when holding Fugo's hand was calming you down.

"You can go back to your marine biology studies now, you can continue school and things can go back to normal."

You looked at him and he rubbed his thumb on the back of your hand. His eyes help care and something else you couldn't make out. You tried smiling at him, he was trying to make you feel better and you wanted to smile.

"Yeah..."

You looked away and turned the street corner and he watched your side profile. Your weak smile, that didn't look much like a smile, fading quickly.

"You don't seem happy about that, don't you love marine biology?"

You nodded your head but still didn't look at him.

"I do, it's just the normal part... after Giorno dragged me into this it showed me just how bland my life was before him and all of you."

You turned another corner and you rubbed your nose.

"At first I wanted nothing to do with any of it. I'm not sure what happened but it started to grow on me. Maybe because I was able to connect with all of you or maybe because my confidence built up. I've killed two men, I jumped out of a moving train and indirectly killed that man with the aging stand."

You rubbed your eyes so tears wouldn't rise. A sad smile spreading on your lips when you thought back to your fight with a Prosciutto."

"Going back to normal after all of that... I don't want that. Now I might never see them again, they'd die while doing something good but if I went back to my normal life, I'd died with doing nothing significant. I always wanted a peaceful life but I don't want that anymore. I don't want normal."

Fugo stayed quiet as you explain it to him and nodded his head along. Slowly realizing where this was leading.

"You want to join them don't you?"

You looked at him and didn't hesitate with your response or mutter it, your voice didn't waver but stayed soft and you maintained eye contact with him. His voice was gentle and you looked at him sadly.

"Yes. I do."

You both wandered around the city blindly, he didn't respond to your answer and you didn't say anything else. Throughout the walk, the redness of your nose and your eyes faded. Your sadness slowly fading.

"We should probably ask for directions to a nearby restaurant rather than wandering around."

You looked back at Fugo and nodded at his suggestion. You spotted an old man sitting on a bench not too far away and made your way over to him. You smiled at him as best you could and he smiled back. Fugo looked at your smile and looked away while you spoke to the man.

"Excuse me, sir, if it isn't too much trouble, could you give us some directions to a nearby cafe or restaurant?"

He nodded his head and shakily pointed down the street. His sweet smile still on his face, it was a grandpa like smile that was comforting.

"If you walk that direction and a take a right there is a nice restaurant, a perfect choice for a date."

A blush appeared on your cheeks and Fugo darted his eyes around, trying to look at anything but you and the old man. Now feeling very embarrassed and awkward.

"Thank you but we aren't dating, but I see now that it looks like we are."

You looked down at your hands and let go of his hand. The man brought his hand down and nodded his head with his ever-present smile. You smiled back weakly and started to walk down the street, Fugo started to follow until the old man stuck his cane out and stopped him.

"She's a beautiful girl sonny, sure to have all of Italy at her feet bowing down to her, don't let her get away."

He looked down at the man and then you at you, your back facing him as you walked down the street. A faint blush rising to his cheeks. You weren't just some girl he thought was pretty and think of as a crush. You were a girl that he could love.

"Yeah... I won't."

The old man smiled and lowered his cane, allowing Fugo to pass. The man tapped Fugo's leg with his cane and tilted his head towards you.

"Go have a nice meal with her sonny."

Fugo let a smile spread over his lips and he opened his mouth to respond. You had walked down the street the looked over your should after you noticed Fugo wasn't behind you.

"Fugo?"

Fugo closed his mouth and looked up at you and paused for a moment, only looking at you.

"I'm coming."

He took a step forward but looked down at the man one last time.

"Thank you."

The man nodded with a smile and Fugo started walking to you and soon reaching your side. You both started walking again and you turned the corner, just as the man said there was a restaurant.

While you weren't looking he straightened his tie and adjust his hair, wanting to look a little more presentable. The man was right, you were sure to have all of Italy at your feet, he couldn't let you getaway.

"Trish said her father met her mother in Sardinia while he was on vacation, his identity is somewhere there, we're leaving now."

You and Fugo both stopped in your tracks when you heard Bruno's voice.

"Bucciarati..."

You whispered his name and your eyes widened and before you could look around and try to find him Fugo took your hand and pulled you back around the corner. You heard the sound of a boat starting and saw a boat with everyone on it ride past you at high speed.

After they passed Fugo slowly looked down the canal and led you back around the corner and started walking down to the restaurant. Your pace was slower and Fugo slowed down to match your pace. A frown was settled on his lips and his eyes help hints of sadness. He knew what you wanted even before you could say it.

Sardinia

"Sardinia."

Fugo looked at you and looked away just as you looked at him so you couldn't see his eyes.

"Fugo..."

You both stood outside the restaurant and called his name gently, looking at his side profile while he was turned away. He knew what you were going to say.

You squeezed his hand gently which got him to look at you. You didn't say anything for a moment and just looked at him, rubbing your thumb on the back of his hand gently.

"We can get our food to go, so we can eat it on the boat."

He started to pull you into the restaurant gently.

"So we can have it on our way to Sardinia."

He looked back at you with a gentle smile. He knew you were going to go, but he was going to go with you. Like the old man said he wasn't going to let you getaway.
