Third Person POV

There are quite a few things that aren't within our control. These are the involuntary things. The blink of an eye, the beat of the heart, the inhale and exhale of breath, thinking, living, and Brett Yang could tell you that feeling love is one of these things. He knows that falling in love with his best friend isn't exactly something that he could control.

Not when Eddy Chen made it seem like it was the easiest thing in the world. It felt light and effortless, so easy to digest and take in. The feeling is like Mozart's compositions or the sensation of Japanese cheesecake. Brett Yang felt as if he was the dumbest man alive on earth. He knew from the start that it simply couldn't be them.

Yet he allowed himself to bask in the glory and sensation of loving the younger man. From the start, even their friendship felt forbidden.

*start of flashback*

Brett Yang was just out and about the town. Taking a break from his busy practice schedule, he feels like he deserves it. No, he knows he deserves it. He doesn't really want to play with the other kids, so he just roamed the street markets.

Brett Yang and his family was nothing out of the ordinary. They were a family of four, he has a younger sibling and he lives with his mom and dad. Started playing the violin at the age of five and he has loved it ever since. Of course, he can't lie, he hated it when he was starting. He felt as if he was forced to learn so.

He learned to love it, though.

He was just strolling around town and saw a boy who fell down. He had a scraped knee. Brett felt the need to help him, even if he didn't know who the boy was. As he approached the boy, he noticed how his clothes were far prettier than his. The way the boy presents himself, too, despite being injured, he seemed really sensitive. Brett knew that this boy was from the upper middle class of their town. If he wasn't, he wouldn't be crying about falling and scraping his knee.

"Are you alright?" Brett asked as he kneeled down beside the boy.

"It hurts." The boy complained to Brett with a few tears streaming down his face.

"It'll be alright. Just hold on and let me get water to clean that wound." Said Brett as he approached the stall closest to them and asked for little water. Just enough to soak the handkerchief that he always carries with him.

"This is going to hurt a little but it will clean the wound so it won't get nasty." Brett said as he gently pressed the fabric against the boy's skin. The boy gripped his shoulder a little but felt relieved after the cool water soothed the pain of the wound. He was still crying and Brett noticed this. He wiped the boys tears away with his thumb and looked him in the eye.

"Stop crying now. You will be fine. What's your name and how old are you?" Brett asked as he squeezed the excess liquid from his handkerchief. After this he stood up and offered his hand to the boy, who was still on the ground. The boy took his hand and stood up.

"My name's Edward Chen, my Chinese name is Wei Chen, but you could call me Eddy. I'm 11, turning 12 this March 23." The boy, Eddy said as he smiled at him.

"I'm Brett Yang, my Chinese name is Bo Yao Yang, but just call me Brett. I just turned 12 last March 3rd." Brett said as he returned Eddy's smile.

"Thank you so much. We're friends now, right?" Eddy asked.

"Of course we are." Brett said.

They both stood there and Eddy held Brett's hand. For a moment, nothing mattered around them. Brett noticed that it was already getting dark. He held Eddy's cheek and squeezed softly.

"Be careful, always, okay? Wouldn't want you to get injured again. I'll see you soon, lovely Eddy." Brett said as he walked towards the other way, not seeing the way the younger boy was blushing.

"See you around, Brett."

Both of the boys didn't think much of it then. They both had a new friend and that's what mattered.

*end of flashback*

Brett never knew that he would end up here, in a church standing next to his best friend, the love of his life in the sharpest suit he has ever owned. Brett stares at his handsome best friend that's right beside him. Brett knew that he couldn't do something about it so he just lets it happen.

"Brett, what if I'm not good enough? What if she doesn't love me? I've courted her because my parents told me that we'd have an arranged marriage. I wish she fell in love with me the same way I did with her." Eddy said as he was fidgeting. Constantly fixing his suit and tie.

You don't have to worry about anyone not falling in love with you. You make it seem like it's the easiest thing in the world.

Brett thought but smiled bitterly to answer Eddy.

"Eddy, she loves you. You're a great man and you'd continue to do great things. You'd be the best husband out there." Brett smiled as he went closer to Eddy, fixing the tie that was once fixed. Eddy started crying a little. The older wiped the younger's tears with his thumb. He held the younger's cheek and pinched it a little.

"Stop crying now, lovely Eddy. You will be fine." Brett said, slowly caressing the younger's cheek. Eddy giggles a little and finally smiles completely.

See, you're pretty, but prettier when you smile. Brett thought as he softly chuckled at Eddy.

"This reminds me of the first time we met." Eddy states gently, slowly distancing himself from Brett.

"Yeah. I remember." Brett smiles at the younger.

Please, to the gods out there, even if my love for him is illegal, make sure that it really can't be us if you allow this wedding to continue. Brett thought again as he allows the pain to simmer at the pit of his heart. The pain blooms and blooms and it never wilts. Brett's used to it at this point.

Brett felt the world stop when she entered the church and started walking down the aisle. She looked breathtaking. If Eddy's beautiful, then she's definitely like a goddess. A slower and softer rendition of salut d'amour that Eddy recorded was playing.

The couple was looking each other in the eyes, smiling as if the world around them doesn't matter. Brett smiled as he watched them exchange vows and sweet words that can transcend time. Brett wants to object, he really does. Except he holds them back, the words that his tongue just wants spill. The confession is haunting him, he stays quiet.

Not for his sake but for the lovely couple. He knows he'll never stand a chance with Eddy. Especially that it was an arranged marriage for the Chen family's business and her family business. These types of things which remind Brett that he's still just a commoner. No matter how hard he tries or prays, he simply will never get on Eddy's level.

The difference between their social status was already huge, but seeing Eddy kiss that beloved woman is a slap of reality. It reminds Brett of where he truly stands in Eddy's life. A mere commoner who can only be the best friend. A best friend who is also a boy, the one Eddy sees as a brother.

It's easier that way.

Brett thought as he remembers all those years, just pining. Waiting for Eddy to grab his hand every time they walk side by side, eyes begging the younger to kiss him ever so gently and hold him tight as if no one would ever let go. He just wants to elope with him.

Take Eddy on a different city, province or even country, just so they could be equal. Just so they could be just Brett and Eddy. Just so they could be together without a barrier of their social status. Brett just wants Eddy. Nothing else would suffice but this boy. He knows it.

He chooses to smile through this wedding and finally be happy for the two. After all, it seems like they already love each other even if they were in an arranged marriage. He lets the newlyweds enjoy the reception of the wedding. He simply just cannot watch anymore.

He leaves early, avoiding looking back. He may never move forward if he looked back at the beautiful boy. He took a deep breath, allowed some of the tears to fall down his face and finally, silently walked away from it all. Brett was going to forget him and forgive himself for the pain that he has afflicted upon himself.

He will heal, just not today. Just not today...

bonus:

Eddy Chen and his lovely wife, Irene Chen heard the news about Brett. They immediately went to his family house, wherein he now lives alone. It never really puzzled Eddy when he knew that the older would be living alone. He never seemed to see the older man interested in being in a relationship.

It was like of the older man to disappear from time to time. It was not an unusual thing for him to do so. What's unusual is when the house is eerily quiet. Even if he didn't talk much and lived alone, there would always be the resonance of notes. The echoes of music and the soul of it coloring the house. Music had always been Brett's life. Eddy knows this too well. Like the back of his hand or the moles in his skin.

They checked the entire house and went to his bedroom. The violin case was opened and was already collecting dust. There was no sign of life in the room except a beautiful, blue butterfly that was next to the untouched violin. Eddy approached it, not really knowing the reason why he did. If felt like a surge of energy was pulling him in.

He traced his finger along the sides of the violin, the butterfly doesn't shift from it's position. Eddy takes the cleaning cloth and cleans the dust off of the instrument. When he was about to close the case, the butterfly flew and passed by his curled fingers and the back of his hand.

It tickled him and brought a shiver down his spine. The graze seemed like a touch he used to know. Too familiar for his liking and yet it was soothing and comforting. Almost like the soaked handkerchief Brett put on the scrape he had on his knee when they were younger.

Eddy closed his eyes and sighed. He smiled to himself and held up the butterfly to his eye level. He inspected the wonderful creature and saw how it's colors were mesmerizing. It has tinges of black, yellow, orange and white.

After a few moments of observation, the butterfly flies by his other hand and does the same thing. Eddy already has formed an intuitive guess. He feels like he already knows something. He cannot point it out but it was something. Something he knows so dearly to his heart, mind and soul. There's only one thing that would confirm his hunch.

The butterfly brushed up against his cheek, softly caressing it. Tears cascaded down Eddy's cheek and it was almost as if he heard the wind whisper familiar words to him.

"Stop crying now, lovely Eddy. You will be fine. Remember, I love you."
