《On Set》10

"Luce. Lucy" Someone was calling my name. I couldn't really focus enough to figure out who. Their voice was far away, lucid dreams filled my consciousness.

"Wake up!" And it was like I was swimming to the surface of the water, breaking through gaining consciousness. I woke up startled. I jerked a bit in a panic, sitting straight up quickly.

"Whoa, Luce! You okay?" I looked around and my eyes focused on Chris. He had a slightly worried look on his face. I took a deep breath and rubbed my eyes.

"What time is it?" I croaked

"Eleven"

"No! I've got work!" I yelled getting up quickly. I slept for more than twelve hours! I've got work in an hour. I told them I was coming in at noon.

"Can I use your shower quickly." Chris nodded and I don't even wait for the water to warm. I slapped on some shampoo, washed my body and in 5 minutes I'm out. I dressed for work in jeans and a black shirt. I ran a comb through my hair, brushed my teeth and I was ready to go twenty minutes later.

"Want some lunch?" Chris offered and I grabbed my stuff and followed him out the door. I still had roughly 40 extra minutes, so why not?

"Sure, but I'm buying this time."

We tried eating at this healthy, organic place. All their stuff was home made, with no GMO, pesticides and all that healthy stuff. I ordered a chicken salad and Chris ordered an chicken breast sandwich.

"Wow, I feel so healthy right now. I think my bones are strengthening and my muscles are growing. My cholesterol is down and so is my weight." I commented as I ate my salad making Chris laugh.

"You're losing weight eating?"

"Yeah, I'm new to this healthy life style but I'm pretty sure the weight is leaving by the pound."

"Oh what, every bite of that salad is a pound lost?"

"You feel it too?" I joked going wide eyed and lightly touching his arm. He laughed and clutching his chest which made me laugh.

After we finished eating I paid for lunch and thanked him.

"Hey thanks for letting me stay over last night. And for dealing with the stages of exhaustion."

"Lucy you're like my favorite person to hang out with." He said this and I swear my heart skipped a beat. He set a hand on my forearm and I almost pulled away.

"Chris, you really shouldn't have said that, now you'll never get rid of me."

"Don't think I want to." I was struck speechless when he said that. I looked him in the eyes and smiled. He's probably the most sincere little bastard I know. He smiled back and we head back to set quietly, enjoying each others presence.

Sitting in his car I kept thinking about what he had said. Maybe he did like me at the same level I was slowly admitting to myself that I liked him at? What were we going to do about it? I should have never gotten this close. Everything thing about a possible us was such a bad idea.

I was 10 minutes late when I returned to work. My crew was sitting in the meeting room when I ran in.

"I am so sorry, I was so tired, my internal clock is going crazy right now." I told them. We went over the progress they've made and what we needed to get done next. We were ahead of schedule, which was a miracle in itself. It also meant that I'd be back in Boston in a week or two. I had mixed feelings about that.

I was working with a building crew when I got a call.

"Jones Studio, this is Lucy Jones how can I help you?"

"I'm Gabe Peters, the Sony representative you talked with yesterday."

"Hi Mr. Peters, I hope you're calling with good news." I started pacing the floor unable to keep still. Everyone stopped working and the set moved to a halt.

"I sure am. We want you to build some sets for us." I almost fainted.

"Of course! I'll get one of my representatives to meet you at our office and we'll get started."

"Perfect, I'll swing by tomorrow around ten." He agreed and we shortly hung up. I almost squealed. I called Whitney as soon as I calmed myself down.

"Hey Luce, what do ya need?"

"Hey Whit, Macy is in town right?" I asked

"Yeah, she's scheduled to come in tomorrow why?"

"I'm going to need her to meet with Mr. Peters, the Sony representative to sign a couple contracts and schedule a couple more meetings."

"No!" Whitney yelled surprised

"Yes! I just got off the phone! This is huge!"

"You did it Lucy!"

"I really couldn't have done it without you. We're going to have to start hiring a couple more hands."

"One step at a time."

The next call I made was to Macy, she was one of my best. I could always trust her to get the job done. I told her about the Sony representative coming to meet with her. She knew the drill. Have them sign the contracts, and set up more meetings with directors, producers and whoever they wanted to bring.

I hung up the phone and took a deep breath. I was thrilled we got this deal. I wanted to start working on that set now. I also really wanted to tell Chris the news. He was probably busy, he was at the other end of the building shooting a movie. I decided to wait till later tonight. We might be going out to dinner later.

I tried to focus on the work in front of me. We finished one set, and now we had one more to build. We just got started working on that one. The frames were built and looking pretty good. I let my crew alone and went into the office to answer emails, and go over other plans for other movie sets.

The day went painfully slow. It was around seven when I left. My staff left around four for the day. I tried to stay busy, but I was waiting on Chris to come by or text me.

I finally got up from my desk and took myself out to dinner. I felt ridiculous waiting for Chris. I felt stupid wishing he would call me so I could tell him my news. I was already attached, and it was a nightmare. I tried to keep my distance. I could think of a hundred reasons why I should, but I could think of a thousand reasons not to. It was absolutely ridiculous.

I checked into my old hotel. The comfy, humble Marriott. My room was laid out exactly the same, the only difference was the numbers on the door. I put some stuff away, read a bit. Watched some mind numbing TV and went to bed. I tossed and turned it was ten. Not really even late, but I didn't really have a reason to stay awake. I thought about setting my alarm clock earlier so I could go on a run. I tossed and turned for awhile. My brain is unable to turn off. I realized as I laid wide awake in my empty, cold hotel room, I was more comfortable in Chris' hotel room than this. My own room! Oh Jesus Christ.

I stayed up thinking about Whitney and how she was doing. Trevor has refused to agree to a puppy, making Whitney crazy. At least she gave up on the idea of having a dog in the office. I thought of Crystal who probably saved a life today, and how she goes home to her husband Dylan and her two kids. I thought about my family. They were probably asleep by now. I wished I was asleep then, but I very much was not.

It was 11:30ish when my phone went off. I wondered who it could be. Maybe my parents needed me, or Whitney or Crystal did.

"Hello?" I answered apprehensively.

"I know it's late but you still up for dinner?" Chris' warm voice said. I checked my clock it was officially 11:37 at night.

"Well as long as food is involved I'll be there." I told him getting up from my bed. I grabbed some shoes, and pulled a sweatshirt over my head.

"Dinner tends to involve food."

"Shut up."

"I'll meet you at the deli right beside your hotel."

"I'll see you in 5."

"Can't wait."
