《Gravitate - Liam Stewart》1 - Escape

Orange is one of the few colors I have not met. But that is seemingly about to change. If Kate managed to pull it off anyway.
Currently I'm stuck here, once again in the middle of nowhere propped up against the truck, waiting with Rob. Rob's my psychopathic guardian. With no parents or family contact I only have the person who is in charge of me.
I watch the sky with my head tilted back, leaning on my elbows that are set on the truck hood. We've been here for nearly half an hour, not that I don't mind a break from the recent endless hours in the truck.
But sitting here like ducks, waiting, waiting and more waiting is just another type of torture. It's worth when we are in front of an abandoned gas station in the middle of nowhere, just waiting for someone who is taking forever to get here. But for now watching the trees wave against the skyline is enough to keep me focused on something.
My peace is interrupted when Rob nudges me, causing me to look towards the road in front of me, only to see a car coming our way. It pulls off the road, stopping right in front of us. From our angle we knew any cars would be from the direction of the camp Kate had been stationed at.
The idea that an Orange that may be sitting next to her makes me uneasy, Kate I can trust but getting my mind messed with doesn't sound enjoyable. Plus sitting, or mostly sleeping in my case, in a truck all day did not make me burst with the energy to fight right after I spent a night fighting.
My skin is covered in purple splotches, I don't need my mind to be messed with too. Kates presence gives me some peace. She's one of the Leagues recruits, just like Rob. I am working my way to be coming a recruiter.
I've also been working with the League for a little over a year and I'm only 17. I don't get the choice to leave, they say it's to keep me safe. Besides it's the more comfortable version of a camp. But while they may be better than a camp, I can't imagine spending much longer like this.
Still, I became one of the Leagues many weapons, but they take care of me at the end of the day. It's a luxury not many kids have, even if it comes at a cost. Sometimes I don't know if I'm willing to pay it. Unlike most kids, who can't use their powers at camps and therefore don't know how to use them at all, I know how to use my power.
I'm pretty good with it too. I have a better tolerance , if no longer drains me to do simple tricks. I can do more than a regular blue. My world right now revolves around me being the best at being blue. Everything comes with a price though, mine is usually passing out during hard core training sessions.
Over the last year I've been trained to be better than the average Blue. My specialty is The fact I can use my powers on myself. The way I use my gift, if that's what you want to call it, makes me special. I was trained to be a weapon and that's what I became. Sadly, I get exhausted by doing what they need me to. They keep me safe when I finish my mission, though on a regular basis I usually train the other blues, helping them control their power. Missions are pretty rare for me, I'm better at training the people who do the missions. Supposedly.

Afterall, I am the best in the League at controlling my gift. Who else is better to train blues than a blue. A car door slam brings me out of my head, and my guard comes back up until I see Kate running over to us, hugging Rob and then me. My eyes stay focused on the girl coming out of her car while hugging Kate back.
Unlike most of my 'caretakers', I like Kate. She's honest and protective without any agendas besides helping others like us who need it.
As for the girl, I know she is an orange, which I have never met one before. She is why we are here. She takes off her white coat, revealing an army uniform. The irony is classic. I don't know basically anything about what has happened in the last day or so. If anyone is on their trail or not, I'm just here for protection, people will be coming after us. After her.
Kate grins as she exclaims "We did it.". She seems kind of tired, Rob sets his gun on the hood and I avoid looking at it. Rob, he is another case. He's a jackass. Simple as that. I don't like him, he is only here because he wants to help others but doesn't care for what he destroys on the way.
Even if its me. I don't care for risking my life for others, or even dying to help the kids that need it but I put my life in his hands and he doesn't care either. That's what always gets me. Still he always keeps a close eye on me, it's a mutual feeling that we do not like nor trust each other. But he is my direct commanding caretaker. I am always under his orders.
He grins as he shakes his head "We never doubted you.". He glances towards me and I look away, crossing my arms as I glare at my shoes.
"Where are the other two?" Kate questions as she looks around, setting her hand on Rob's arm. I stay trained on my shoes, knowing he failed his mission. I had been there, I almost used it as a chance to escape. But his plan went wrong, ruining mine.
How was I supposed to escape when there were guards everywhere? It nearly got us caught and I don't know if I'd survive in a camp. The league is better than the camps. Rob is better than the camps, I have a lesser chance of dying. Slightly.
"I couldn't get them out." he sighs, she gasps at that, we barely ever fail missions and when we do, it sucks. But the fact I had my own agenda also hurt the case, not that he fully knew that. He assumes though. Somehow I think I'd be better off on my own but I'd have to give up going after camps. But I can't help anyone if I'm dead either.
"What? I'm sorry." she says, rubbing my arm, I don't bother looking at her. I do notice army boots walking towards us though.
We are going on our next mission after this, a red. "We've got a lead on a red." he informs her, bingo. I don't want to go, reds are dangerous. I definitely don't feel like getting my hair burned off, it is finally long and healthy again.
"Oh Ruby this is Rob and Emma." Kate says, I look up at the girl once more. Her skin is smooth, I'm almost jealous. Her brown skin glows in the sun, even the uniform looks good against it with the army green. It's hard to pull off a uniform, or never looked good on me anyway. Her hair is free and many small curls pile onto each other.

She doesn't look happy to be here, maybe she's just nervous. "Nice to meet you." Rob extends his hand to her. She barely looks at it, she's afraid which is understandable. They saved me when I was 15 and I was scared to death, and two years later here I am.
Rob drops his hand, Kate interrupts the awkward silence "We don't have a ton of time and we need you to change, okay?" Kate tells her, Rob grabs the bag that sits on top of the hood.
"New clothes, soap some other things." he gestures to the shut-down gas station we've been parked at, "A bathroom still has running water but hey-" he pauses, catching her attention, and she looks at him again, "Definitely don't drink it okay?". He gives her the bag, before nodding to me.
She takes the bag, setting the strap on her shoulder before taking a step back. She steps on something that rolls out from under her foot, and flails as she falls. My hand flies out as I go to stop her from falling, but Rob's hand shoots out, taking hers. Her eyes flicker orange and I prepare to send her flying this time. Kate knocks my hand away, forcing me to give her a look.
She gives me a look, silently telling me not to do anything. Ruby begins to pant a little, and it doesn't take a green to know somethings off. "You okay?" Kate checks earnestly, worrying for our new recruit.
"Yeah uh just tripped." Ruby excuses, nearly walking away but Rob grabs her attention once more.
He nods towards me as he speaks to her, "Emma will come with you. Right now she is here to protect you." she freezes, looking to me for a second and then nodding slightly. I know I'm not the friendliest looking person, a bored look sits on my face everyday, because that's what I am. Bored.
She continues to walk inside, Rob shrugs at me before gesturing for me to follow her. I jog to catch up and get in step with her.
Finally inside, I begin to walk towards the food as I speak, dismissing her "I'm gonna see if there is any food. I'm starving.". She nods and I can feel her eyes tear into me, as I leave her standing there.
She's kind of weird. Are all oranges like that? Silent and mysterious, I mean she's got to be nervous but it is kinda intense. Even for me. I hear her moving around, but don't really pay attention to it.
I pause when I hear a clang, "Ruby you good?" I call, only to have the lights explode. I duck, covering my head with my arms. "Ruby!" I call out as it stops, I stand when I hear footsteps running.
I follow the noise, "Hey!" I hear Ruby, I watch her run out the back door. I swing around the aisle, sliding on the broken glass. I make it out the door only to see Ruby banging on a van door, "Please let me in!" I hear her plead. Someone must have come into the gas station after we cleared it.
I sprint towards her and hear Kate calling for us. She runs to the side door as soon as she sees me getting close. "Please I think they're trying to kill me." Ruby says again, the door opens and she slides in.
I pause, my mind frozen as she gets in. I stick my hand out instinctively before they can close the door. I struggle to hold the door open as I launch myself in with my powers. The entire van shakes from my body hitting the floor with such force. A groan escapes me and it my body aches already from the bruises but after launching myself a good ten feet, well I had to work on my landings. I put a hand on the side of my head, I'm not bleeding but it is pounding. "Stop!" I say before shutting the door with my powers again, I am officially worn out.
Still, Rob and Kate are still searching for us. "Be quiet!" I whisper harshly, this is my chance. The girls eyes are glued to me carefully. I hear two more voices that I don't recognize. I pull myself up onto the floor next to Ruby who has wide frightened eyes, "I'm not here to help them, I need to get away from them." I tell her, panting heavily before my eyes begin to droop. It's hard for me to use my power on myself. Trying to convert the energy to work on myself is not easy. I'm the only blue I know who can do it. Until I started training the new wave of blues who will one day be as good as I am, but that might take a little longer now that I'm gone.
The girl shoves a big blanket over us and I don't bother protesting as I finally relax, my body going limp. Doors open, the van shaking as they slam shut and I hear people settling in. I do not have the energy to fight anyone right now.
I hear Kate call out our names again, "Emma! Ruby!" they yell out from a distance, and then the cars sputters to turn on. "Ruby! Emma!" they yell, they're getting closer.
"Who are these guys?" a voice questions, it was a boy. The other urges him to go, there were two males, plus the little girl. My mind crosses the thought on what the girl is here for with two guys. I didn't think were any more people but I wasn't sure. I can take them on if needed, depending on their powers. I obviously don't have a lot of energy.
The van lurches away, I slide a bit on the floor and Ruby peers up, looking out the back window before I nudge her to get back down. She gives me a shocked look under the blanket as a boy breaks the silence "What happened at the gas station Zu? Did they see you?".
"Yeah who's Ruby?" Another person asks, and that's the moment that Ruby totally gives us away.
She throws the blanket off of us and then exclaims "I'm Ruby.". Fear fills in her voice. I force myself up just in time to see both boys heads whip around to see us.
The car screeches to a stop, sending me flying forward just a bit. "Ow!" I glare at the blond who is driving.
They all stare at us and Ruby speaks up again, introducing herself "Ruby Daly. This is Emma..", they look to me and then there's an awkward silence.
The boy in the passenger seat, he has dark skin and a pair of thick glasses. The boy in the driver's seat has short blond hair with blue eyes, he's lean and skinny. "What do we always tell you Zu?" the boy in the passenger seat exclaims, gesturing to us "No strays!".
"Wait hey i'll handle this." the blond tells him, though he seems pretty out of it. His face holds shock, that either is because we're in their van or that Zu let us in.
I stand up, moving from the tumbled position I had been in. "Don't worry, i'm leaving." Ruby says, I watch her gather her stuff.
"Wait did you guys just come from a camp?" the blond questions, watching Ruby struggle to open the door, it is locked but from what I know about her she had been in the camp for almost seven years. I was given a little info about her, like I get with all my missions, it's not much though.
"Yeah they broke me out. But i'm green i'm not a threat." she says, fixing her bag and taking off her shoes. She is still wearing the ones from her camp. Everything else is stuff from the League that I packed.
That is such a lie though. She is dangerous and sure as hell not a green. "Wait you mean the League?" the blond questions curiously.
"Open the fricking door Liam!" the brunette male exclaims, obviously annoyed and exasperated by his friend. "We already got the cops and the tracers on our ass, we don't want to add the League to the list. What if they put in a call that there's five kids cruising around in a beat up minivan?" he questions exasperatedly, though he does have a point. He must be a green, something Ruby is not.
He looks around to see if anyone is coming after us. "Woah that's no way to talk about Betty man." Liam tells him, Betty was be the minivan. He named his minivan Betty?
The brunette shakes his hand before looking at Liam "Excuse me." he rolls his eyes, "For hurting the feelings of a nissan van!". Ruby stands again, having put new shoes on.
"Please just let me out. I'm really sorry." Ruby begs, not wanting to get caught by the League. She'd have more of a problem with them than I would.
It took me two years to gain their trust, just enough that I could get on the outside of the facility to escape and now we are in the middle of the road in a dull blue minivan named Betty. I have a tracking device, though I could just say she ran and I ran after her to protect her. That I was going to use the tracking device once we stopped.
Full proof, unless I get caught again in like a year. Then i'm screwed. But for now, I am so close to being free. "You're not going with the League." the blond mutters before sending me flying with how fast he started moving the van again.
"Would you stop that!" I exclaim as I fell on my butt. This is ridiculous, he should drive better. I don't care if he is just learning or whatever, it's still ridiculous.
"Liam!" the brunette exclaims as we pull off, pissed at this point. I would be too, but I don't care at this point. I don't have the energy to walk.
"I'm Liam, that's Zu, this is Chubs." he introduces us, the little girl is named Zu. Interesting name, the annoyed boy is Chubs. A weird name but okay.
"Chubs?" Ruby has the same thought as me. She makes a weird confused face, which he obviously doesn't like.
"Charles to you! To both of you." he points aggressively towards me. I put my hands up as I slouch on the floor.
I pull my knees up a bit to make sure I don't continue to slide around. "Yeah he used to be a bit beefier. Zu can back me up on that one." Liam shares. unphased by the events of the last few minutes.
Zu tap/ his shoulder, he glances over his shoulder at her while she points at the road, at something out of my range is sight. "Yeah Zu?" he questioned before he turns back around. I stand, making my way forward to see what she's pointing at.
Another car on the road. I don't see the problem, until a bullet came at us. My hand shoots out as it hit the windshield, stopping it before it hits me. Liam dodges the other car and I fall into Chubs seat, pulling myself up before I land on him. Then I hit Liam's side as he went back into his lane narrowly. I need to sit down.
I finally gather myself in the back and sit down as Chubs mutters "It's lady Jane." he glares at Liam and states wildly "I told you I saw Lady Jane!". I have never actually seen Lady Jane, though i'd heard of her from the League.
I look out the back window to see her car turn quickly in the road, leaving black marks. She's coming after us. "Come on we gotta go. Go go go!" Chubs yells, and I brace myself as I noticed she was about to hit us.
I strengthen my arms, trying to not hit my head on the window. She pulls out her gun and tries to shoot the tires but Liam swerves the car, making her miss. "The League is here!" I yell as I watch them hit Lady Jane's car. "She dropped her gun!" I call out, anxiety building in me as I know that I won't get another chance to escape for quite awhile if I get caught now.
