《Gravitate - Liam Stewart》2 - Nightmares

I SIT ON THE CHAIR BEHIND LIAM'S SEAT, PLAYING WITH THE CURLS IN MY HAIR. "If the League was protecting us from the tracer that was shooting at us, what makes them so bad?" Ruby questions, I roll my eyes, she was doing a horrible job at being a green.
"Well the enemy of my enemy is my friend-" Chubs lets out a huffy laugh, "Yeah like that ever works." he shakes his head and looks down at the paper he was working on with Zu.
"The woman that I met risked a lot to get me out. She seemed okay." Ruby says, which it was true. Kate was one of the good ones. Rob was a bit harsher, maybe because he was assigned to me.
Liam lets out a harsh breath "Some shady lady kidnaps you and you think it's alright?" Liam says, I roll my eyes at that because he didn't even know Kate.
I close my head as I lean my head on my arm. "You were hanging with the wrong people. Like did she lure with candy from the back of a panel van or something?" Chubs asks, very sarcastic but serious. They really didn't like the league. The league was bad, but it also wasn't black and white.
"You weren't there." Ruby tells him seriously, "She said that the league wanted to help me and I ran away. What if I was wrong? What if they-" She chose now to second guess herself?
But Liam exploded, "You don't want help from the league!" he yelled, he voice got quieter, not less harsh though, as he talked. He practically made me jump out of my seat, my eyes shot open. "Okay?" he was silent after that.
Chubs cleared his throat, "Come on Zu it's time for math class.". He got up and I reached between the side of the van and Liam's seat, rubbing his arm slightly. He glanced at my hand, it was something I had always done for my students whenever they had gotten yelled at by Rob. Sometimes they just needed a human connection, a touch when things got rough.
I didn't know how else to comfort someone. I take my hand away, leaning on it again as I shut my eyes once again but I heard him tell Ruby "Listen my brother joined the League first and he's always right so I joined too. They just made us so many promises. Taught us how to use our powers at first, on little things like dummies, then they showed us how to break an arm." I remembered that. "I didn't sign up to be a soldier so I left.", I wish I had had that choice, "And i'll die before I go back." he states, my eyes peek open just slightly.
"They're fighting a war." Ruby tells him, "Doesn't that require them to be strong?". She had a point but the stuff they made us do was something a kid shouldn't have to experience. They shouldn't save us just to have their own personal army.
"Strong yeah? Cruel, reckless? No. Leave that to the government." Liam says, he knew what they did, almost as much as I did.
Ruby denies that "There was nothing cruel about what she did. She rescued me, she saved my life.". Well obviously, how else would they get kids on their side to be weapons if they are all in the camps.
"For what?" Liam raised his voice again, causing me to flinch. I was used to people yelling, but it still bothered me everytime.

"I don't know. I don't know what's going on. But for the first time in six years someone was kind to me. So i'm just saying my experience was a little different than yours." she replied, obviously bothered and ready to fight back against him.
After all she had freedom now. "So why'd you run away from her? Why did Emma choose to run away with you?" Liam questioned forcefully, knowing he was right but he better not bring me into it.. Just because a good person does a good thing, does not make the people they work for good.
"Leave me out of it." I snap, crossing my arms as I look up at the ceiling, I was not about to be used again, whether he was doing the right thing or not. I just wanted to be left alone, I was not a symbol or a reason or a weapon, I was a person.
Liam glanced back at me before going back to the road. "The League's not your friend okay? You made the right choice trusting me." he told her, which I could believe. He was one of us, he was like me a Blue and the first blue I had seen in two years that wasn't either with the League, or someone I had to train or protect.
He was just Liam, not an assignment. "Why should I trust you?" Ruby asked, does she have a death wish? For someone wanting to stay out of the camps, she's not doing a great job.
"Whether you trust me or not, I don't care." His voice rises a bit again, "Sooner or later you're gonna learn that the only ones who can help us, are us." he says, his hand hitting the wheel a little. It was quiet again after that, no one really spoke.

I stand outside, my hair wet from the shower. We had broke into a hotel room, I had showered and now Ruby was in there. I went outside after, not interested in being around people at the moment.
I hear a door close, making me jump up from where I was sitting on the bumper of the Betty and turning around with blue eyes, only to see Liam. I close my eyes with a relieved sigh, opening them with my regular dark brown ones. "You okay?" he questions, shoving his hands in his pockets as he comes over to me.
"Yeah, you just surprised me. Very sneaky. " I wag a finger at him, though my heart was racing. A smile appeared on his face, but he laughed as he looked at the ground before going back to me. "What are you doing out here?" I question as I lean on the van, looking at him.
He came by my side, giving me a look as he said "I could ask you the same thing.". He glanced around before admitting, "I came to bring you inside. You should get some sleep, we're bring Ruby home tomorrow.". I scoff, she really was a child.
"She can't go home, none of us can." I shake my head, flexing my jaw angrily. She doesn't know how much all the kids in the camps want to go home, the kids in the league, kids everywhere want to go home.
I would have gone home if I could. It's not an option, I really wish it was but it isn't. "I know. We'll wait for her in case she changes her mind." he tells me, while I run my tongue over my teeth. "They took her childhood, she wants it back. We can't blame her." he shrugs, he had a point but it still sucked for the rest of us that she can't grow up.

"That reminds me of a song I used to listen to." I admit, I used to listen to it repeatedly, my parents ended up hating it but let me listen to it anyway, well as long as I head headphones on.
He smiled at that, "What song?" he looked at me. I scooch over on the bumper, patting the spot next to me.
"Youth. I listened to it over and over again. I still know the words, the league let me have a dvd player, so I asked for the CD. It's at the warehouse I stayed in still." I tell him as he sits next to me, his face goes cold for awhile.
He leans against the van, looking up at the sky. "I remember that. It used to play on the radio. How long were you with the League?" He questions, glancing down at me.
I sigh, playing with the strings that were on his sweatpants that I had on along with his shirt. He had lended them to me, I didn't have any clothes with me. But I did end up washing mine the shower, using a bit of soap that the motel had stocked in it's rooms.
They were now drying on a vent in the bathroom, I stuck a bar in the wall, letting the clothes drying a few inches away as they hung from the vent. "They took me from the camps when I was around fifteen? That was two years ago." I do the math in my head easily, time had gone quickly since I was always busy.
"You spent two years with them?" He questioned, his face full of shock. I shrug, pulling myself up with a sigh.
"I am gonna go to sleep, i'll have Ruby sleep on the bed with Zu. It's too crowded otherwise. I'll take the floor." I tell him, pulling on the sleeve of the shirt he gave me.
He shook his head, "There's a chair if you want it." he offered but I shook my head. He gets up, ready to head inside with me.
"No I will let Chubs or you have it. I'm good on the floor, I used to sleep on the concrete one at the warehouse a lot so a carpet one is fine." I reassure him, he licks his lips and sighs, rubbing his jaw.
"Well then you're with me. I'll let Chubs have the chair." he informs me before walking inside. I spin around when I don't hear the door close, only to see him standing there waiting for me. He raises an eyebrow and I glance around me to make sure no one is around before going inside, passing him.
He closes the door behind him, locking it. Ruby and Zu are on the bed, Chubs is sitting in the desk chair, though that wouldn't be the one he's sleeping in.
There was a plush one in the corner near the window that was blocked the the drapes. "Chubs you have the chair." Liam says as he grabs the two blankets from the bed. There was already one on the chair.
He lays one blanket down on the floor, laying the other one over it. Oh so that's what he meant. I just thought we'd each have a blanket. I blush a bit as I hear Chubs say "You guys gotta behave, Zu is here.".
"Chubs!" Liam scolds him and I avoid looking at them as I walk to the bathroom. I close the door quietly behind me, leaning on it for a minute before washing my face, putting my hair up into a bun.
There was a soft knock on the door. I wipe my face with the towel I had used earlier, before getting the door with the towel in hand. "Yeah?" I check, Liam was standing there.
I don't face at him for a second, looking at where Chubs was doing something on the map. "You okay? Sorry about him." Liam apologizes, I look down at the towel and then to Liam.
"I'm fine." I give him a smile, turning to put the towel on the rack, "Just wanted to wash my face, a nightly ritual i've become obsessed with.". I suck a breath in then turn to him, "I'm gonna go to sleep." I furrow my eyebrows, before walking past him.
I was the biggest dork I know, maybe bigger than Chubs. I lay on the floor, stretching just a bit. Liam's shirt, though tucked in the sweatpants, was big enough where it didn't show any stomach. He lays down next to me and says "Chubs go to bed, you can finish in the morning.".
"I'm not doing anything." Chubs scrunched his face, Liam leaned up on his elbows, looking at him with a face. "Alright alright i'll turn off the light too player." he rolled his eyes as he pushed the chair back into the desk, turning off the light and finally climbing onto his plush chair.
I lay on my back, looking at the ceiling until I feel Liam nudge me. "Go to bed." he murmurs in my ear. He moves away, I look at him only to see him staring at me with a smirk, he had caught me. He raises an eyebrow so I turn my face away, hoping he couldn't see the change in color that rose on my face.
I tuck the strays from my messy bun behind my ear before I felt him take my hand in his, rubbing his thumb across the top of mine. "You are safe with us. We won't use you." I hear him say before I entwine my fingers with his.
He knew I was scared, leaving the league, Lady Jane coming after us. It was an insane day, but I wouldn't be anywhere else. The lamp light was still on, I saw Ruby sit up quickly, making me do the same.
Liam got up, moving to the other side of the bed to comfort Zu. Ruby looked to me for a second as I hear Liam comfort Zu, sitting on the side of the bed as she pants, "Hey Zu, it's just a dream. Come here." they hug, I watch them before raising an eye at Ruby.
She nods, so I figure she'll tell me tomorrow. "I gotcha. I gotcha." Liam tells Zu, he rubs her back before separating "Go back to sleep." he says, before moving so she can pull the covers up. He tucks her in before coming back to me, I roll over so I can sleep on my stomach.
I face my head towards him, moving my arm under it. "Does that happen a lot?" I question, staring at the bed then him as he finally finishes moving. He nods, and I stay silent before closing my eyes so I could go to sleep.
