《After Dark》Chapter 27

Eliza emerged from the bathroom of the guest house in the night gown provided to her. She touched the silky fabric with her fingers, then spun in a circle. Florence applauded Eliza.

"It's lovely on you." Florence complimented as Eliza made her way over. "I hope you don't mind staying in this house. If I had it my way you'd be in the main house."

"I'm just grateful for how gracious you've been to me." Eliza told Florence, which caused Florence to stand from her place on the couch and wrap her in a hug. Florence looked into Eliza's eyes and studied her face.

"You're beautiful, aren't you? I can see what my son sees in you." She told Eliza, causing her to become bashful. Eliza looked off to the side in a moment of shyness, then noticed a large cabinet looking structure against a wall. She walked over to it and studied it. It seemed to have a circular object at the top, one that looked almost as though it were to be a mirror but it was glass. You could see right through it just as though it were a snow globe, but nothing was to be seen inside.

"It's a television." Florence answered Eliza's obvious curiosity. Then she walked across the sitting area and opened the cabinet doors. That revealed a switch, which she turned. The circular glass at the top began to glow yellow. With the turn of the dial, it presented a picture. Not just any picture, but a moving one.

"It's fascinating!" Eliza looked at the screen. "It's just like the moving pictures. And it has soundies too!"

"It cost a pretty penny." Florence told Eliza. "They don't always televise broadcasts, we're lucky to have found one."

Eliza crouched down to get a better look at the picture. "Well, it's like they're really right here in this room. Just in a tiny globe."

Florence laughed. "You're welcome to use it as much as you like. Just be careful because it can sometimes overheat. If it feels especially hot and the picture begins to flicker more than regularly, just turn it off for a few moments."

"Thank you, Mrs. McGill." Eliza said, only for Florence to correct her.

"Please, Florence." She smiled. "I'll see you in the morning."

"Good night." Eliza waved to her as she followed her to the front door of the guest house.

"Night." Florence said. Eliza looked at the wall that had the front door. It was covered in a large window. Eliza touched one of the squares of the colonial styled window. She could see out toward the pool on the property in the distance.

With an exhale she walked back over to the couches. Then she sat down to watch the television. The picture was so small, she could hardly see it. So she stood up and bent over the television to watch. It was an uncomfortable position, but the technology was so fascinating she could hardly look away.

Little did she know, William walked over to the guest house to ensure she was okay. Since the entire wall was a window, he could see her without ever knocking on the door. He saw her ass poked out as she bent over the tv in her night gown. It caused a stir in his pants, he cleared his throat. With a grin, he knocked on the door.

Eliza looked over her shoulder for a moment, but was too captivated by the TV. She did a double take when she realized that it was William, so she stood up straight and walked over to let him in. "What brings you here?"

"I apologize for how my father behaved." William walked into the house past Eliza. She shut the door behind him. "It isn't fair how he treated you today."

"I'm used to it." Eliza told William. "Being in my skin, it's something that happens quite a bit. There's nothing that you or I can do about it."

"Not if I have a say in it." William stepped toward Eliza. "He had no right to act the way he did."

Eliza breathed out her nose calmly and crossed her arms. "William, you can't fight all of my battles for me. Some you're just going to have to let me do on my own."

Those words hardly sit right with William. He wished to protect her from the world. But how could he protect her from something bigger than the both of them? He walked over to the couches and sat down, deep in thought. He tried to perceive the privilege he had being in his own skin.

Eliza walked over and stood in front of where he sat. She brushed his forehead with her thumb, his hair moving out of the way. Then he wrapped an arm around her waist, bringing her closer. His cheek rested on her breasts.

They looked into one another's eyes, and slowly began to kiss. It was soft and warm, not at all rushed. They kissed like that for a long while.

Across the field stood Florence in the main house. She watched as her son visited Eliza in what he thought to be a secret. Her heart swelled as she watched them embrace one another. After a smile of happiness, she shut off the light and began to walk up the back stairs of the house.

Across the Long Island Sound, Herbert got home late. He shrugged off his jacket and placed it on a jacket rack. Walking into his kitchen area, he noticed he had a pile of newspapers he'd yet to throw out. He picked them up going through each one of them. But one in particular caught his eye.

In that article was William's mugshot. Herbert was surprised at what he saw in the article. Taking the paper, he turned on a lamp by a chair and sat down. Opening to the article, he began to read the details of what occurred.
