《After Dark》Chapter 25

Jack sat in a jail cell alone. He was entirely frightened, and at first he was unsure of what exactly caused the ambush. Did someone snitch? While laying on the hard bed of his cell, he remembered telling the Peruvian prostitute of his whereabouts. And while he hated to believe it was she who leaked the information, he was definitely plausible.

"Hey, youngin." Someone called out from an opposite cell. Jack slowly got up from his bed and walked to the bars. A black man stood in the cell opposite from him, his face resting on the bars. "What's got you locked up?"

"Gang bust." Jack answered. The man was surprised.

"You? In a gang bust?" He questioned. "Just anybody's getting involved in that these days, aren't they?"

"What's got you in here?" Jack questioned. The man laughed, then leaned on the bars as if resting against a table.

"Let's just say my brown eyes looked a little too hard at a lady with blue ones." He answered. "Makes some people nervous."

"They locked you up because you're black? But this is New York!" Jack said in surprise.

"Didn't lock me up because I'm 'black'. They locked me up for 'intimdation'." The man said, then keenly looked down the hallway to see how close the officers were. "Or at least that's what the books say."

Jack seemed deeply moved by this, but also unable to stay calm. Ever since he was locked up, he hasn't been able to get a hold of himself.

"Where's your people, youngin?" The man asked. Jack shrugged, he didn't know where William and everyone else went. As far as he could see, he was abandoned. "You look pretty shaken up, don't you?"

"I've never been arrested before." Jack could hardly get the words out without shaking. "I don't know what to expect."

"I don't know what you did, but if it had anything to do with bootlegging you might be in here for a long time." The man told him. "But the judge might take pity on your age. And your color."

"What's me being white have to with it?" Jack asked out of curiosity. "I'm a white boy and I'm locked up here just like you."

"The difference is that you did the crime and I didn't, boy." The man told him. "And you might get out of here and I won't."

"You don't know that to be true." Jack told him, and the only thing he got in return is a tired, unimpressed state.

"Wanna bet?" The man asked. Afterward, he slowly backed away from the cell bars and into the shadowy dark of his cell. Then Jack could hear him laying on his bed. Jack felt tired, so he decided to follow suit and take rest as well.

While laying in bed, all he thought of was his Pervuian lover. Looking at the bottom of the empty bunk bed above him, he questioned whether or not she truly betrayed him. But he quickly was awoken when his jail cell was opened, and in came a large man about three times Jack's size.

He stared at Jack, especially his skinny frame. "You don't think I'm taking the top bunk, do you?"

William wasn't immediately invited inside. He walked in front of the closed front door. He looked back at the car where everyone waited patiently to see what happened next.

"This is where William grew up?" Eliza asked Connor as she took in the beauty and opulence of the house. Connor chuckled.

"Surprised, aren't you?" He asked while poking a cigarette between his lips. He cupped his hand around the tip while igniting a small silver lighter. It had Celtic designs all around it.

"If this is how he lived before, why did he come to New York?" Eliza looked to Connor. "And why did he get involved in gangs?"

"It's a good question with a dumb answer, Eliza." Connor told her as he fidgeted the lighter between his fingers calmly. "But I don't think Will would want me sharing that with you."

"Did you grow up like this?" Eliza asked, then Connor laughed some more.

"No, not at all." Connor answered. "In fact, my family worked for William's family. Can't say I was as blessed as this."

William wondered what they were discussing in the car. He clenched his jaw at the thought of Connor sharing something he wouldn't want Eliza knowing. It was humiliating enough for him to have Eliza back in this godforsaken place.

The front door opened and behind it stood the butler, this time in his uniform. "Mr. McGill, I apologize for having you wait."

"You didn't have to get changed for me, Leonard." William told him. But then he realized that the butler hadn't left simply to change, but he alerted William's old man.

"I had to, William. If your father awoke to find you here, plus with guests, he would be furious." Leonard whispered. "It was much better to tell him."

William's father was still in his striped pajama set. He walked down one of the double, curved steps. Then he walked through the foyer and made his way over to the front door. He was a tall man, older in age. His hair blonde hair was turning white. His posture was stiff and calculated.

"William." His father commented. "I thought I told you never to return."

"I didn't plan on this either." William answered. "But Connor drove me back here."

His father stood silent.

"Listen, Pa. We're gonna die if we don't have somewhere to stay." William told him. "I got myself into some trouble up in New York and I don't think I can ever go back."

"I cleaned my hands of you when you left here." His father reminded him, but his words were quickly discarded as a loud exclaim filled the foyer.

At the top of the balcony in the foyer stood his mother, who was much younger in age compared to William's father. "William!"

She made her way down the stairs and wrapped her son in a hug. Her cheek pressed to him and she held him tightly. She was so youthful, one could mistake her for his sister. She held his face after their embrace. "You've returned to me."

William could hardly hold back his tears. "Ma, I'm back home."

William's father grumbled as he watched the two hug. And out of kindness toward his wife (or possibly fear of his wife), he changed his tune. "Well, I'm sure you've brought Connor. Both of you may stay here if you wish. But you can't live here. This will only be a temporary arrangement."
