《After Dark》Chapter 17

All of the boys sat in the car with each other. "Listen, you need to get your head on your shoulders." Connor advised William. "It's been weeks since you and Eliza haven't been courting. It's over, Will."
"I know." William exhaled. He sat right beside Connor, and looked forward to prevent him from seeing the sorrow in his eyes. "There's just some loose strings."
Connor leaned over looked out of the window beside William, directly at the building across the street. Then he sat back in his seat. "Making us sit outside of Eliza's house isn't 'loose strings'. It's psycho."
"Shhh, here she is." William silenced him. The boys saw a Model A Ford double park in front of Eliza's building. At first, William admired the car. He was thinking of buying the same one. A black man got out of the car and jogged over to the other side. William almost lost it when he saw Eliza exit the car after he held the door open.
"There she is!" William shouted.
"Where?" Asked Connor as he tried to spot her.
"Great. She's alive. Now can we leave?" Bunny asked from the backseat.
"Bunny, you son of a bitch." Mumbled William. "She just got out the car with that black guy."
"The tall one right there?" Connor pointed.
"Yeah, that's the chump." William answered. Connor tried to hold back his slight laughter as he looked to William.
"Doesn't seem like a chump to me. He has a car that's in color. Looks like he's doing pretty well." Connor commented.
"He's a chump. I mean, look at him? He hasn't any style. Nothing special about him." William insisted.
Eliza stood in front of her building with Herbert. She looked at him with a glow in her eye. She truly liked him, she knew that much. And she figured that he was a much safer option than William. Him being a banker meant that he was out of all of the drama around the gangs.

"When can I see you again?" Herbert flashed his intoxicating smile.
"I suppose tomorrow, I get off of work early." Eliza told him. The chill of the fall air caused her to hold herself. Herbert held out his hands and began rubbing her arms.
"Maybe you should've brought another jacket." He commented. "Here, have mine."
"I can't, we're already here." She told him.
"I insist." He smiled, wrapping his jacket around her shoulders. She looked into his eyes, then became bashful after a moment.
"Thanks." She said. There was a moment of silence, then Eliza decided she was ready to take she and Herbert's relationship to the next level. "Would you like to come upstairs to have tea?"
"Tea?" Herbert asked with risen eyebrows. "I don't believe I can, I have to be at the bank early tomorrow."
"Of course." Eliza nodded awkwardly.
"And I also don't want to intrude at this hour." He told her.
"It would be no intrusion." She told him. "In fact, I haven't offered a man tea in forever. So I kind of sort of forward to it."
"I'm sure the tea you offer is..." Herbert cleared his throat. "Spectacular."
"That's what I've been told." Eliza answered. "But if you're not ready to accept my tea, we don't have to..."
"I've been thinking about your tea since I met you." Herbert answered quickly. Eliza furrowed her eyebrows in response with a grin. "That didn't come out right. I mean... you always seemed as though you had great tea."
They both displayed an understanding smile. "Well, I should go up now."
"Of course." Herbert said. "Goodnight."
Once Herbert got back into his car, William began ordering for Connor to follow him. "Follow that goddamn car."

"William, we can't." Connor declined.
"Just take my orders!" William argued. "Or else you're not associated anymore!"
Connor stared at William in disbelief. He'd never threatened him in that way. "Well, fuck."
Connor pulled out and followed the Model A car for a short while. They turned a few blocks, but in the night traffic Herbert's car got away. Still, William's behavior left a sour taste in Connor's mouth. He and Connor had been buddies since childhood. And now William was willing to turn on him at a moment's glance.
"This girl better be worth it." Connor pointed at William. "I know she's a good girl, goddammit the best one you've ever had. But what I never thought you'd do is push me away."
"Connor..." William attempted to reconcile, but for once Connor wasn't having it. He just began driving the car back in the direction of Williams new apartment. It was a large place, it took up almost a whole floor of a building. William figured if he was in a place such as that, it would make Eliza come back to him.
So every night he spent his time alone in the vast apartment, sleeping by his lonesome in a king sized bed. At moments he'd walk around the place, or count packages that were set to be sold. But nothing stopped him from thinking about Eliza.
Little did he know, Eliza felt the same way. Herbert was a great guy, and he surely was good company. But when it was just her alone in her apartment, all she thought of was William.
