《After Dark》Chapter 16

The boys waited for Connor in the car, William included. Connor walked up to them, a grim look on his face. Lightly, he gave William the news. He was the best man to do it, the only man who would be able to convey it correctly. William became overwhelmed. He expressed anger and yet all he was filled with was sorrow. In retaliation, he punched the door of the car, shouting out as though it would fix things.

"That bitch." Bunny mumbled.

"I'll kill you if you talk about her like that one more time!" William turned to look back at Bunny, who now was forced to ride in the backseat along with Jack.

"You've got to calm down, Will. You can't get crazy out here. A cop can come any minute." Connor tried to console him before joining them in the car. He tried to be reasonable, allowing William to get out all of his anger. But it was almost never ending. Nothing could fix the loss be felt.

All together they drove off, their destination being a meeting. Within the duration, William seemed angry, hardened. With the loss of Eliza, there was no going back. But he knew it wasn't the end, that was for sure. He'd do anything to get her back.

"Many a tear has to fall but it's all in the game" Eliza sang as she cleaned in Miss Marion's apartment. She skipped around in the song. "Then he'll kiss your lips and caress your waiting fingertips."

Miss Marion lifted her nose as she heard Eliza humming. "You're a lovely singer, did anyone tell you that?"

Eliza laughed quietly to herself. "One or two people."

"Eliza, come closer." Miss Marion beckoned. Eliza was reluctant, but complied with Miss Marion's request. Miss Marion held out her hand.

"Do you wish for me to hold your hand, Miss Marion?" Eliza asked. It was unlike the old lady to act in such a way.

"Of course, dear." Miss Marion answered. "Come, join me."

Eliza sat down next to her. Miss Marion got a good look at Eliza, then she spoke.

"I know that you've had heartbreak." Miss Marion told her. "I can tell in your eyes."

"Is it so obvious?" Eliza sighed as she looked to the ground.

"What caused it, dear? Money? Another woman?" Miss Marion asked. Eliza feared telling Miss Marion the reason, she didn't wish to be judged. But then, Miss Marion got even closer to Eliza's situation. "Race?"

"How would you figure that?" Eliza asked, then resorted to lying. "I'm an upstanding girl, Miss Marion. I've never allowed myself to be courted but any white boy."

Miss Marion squeezed her hand knowingly. "I've seen you wear a Claddagh."

"Miss Marion..." Eliza began to speak, but once again she was hushed.

"It's alright, dear." Miss Marion reassured. "I was in a relationship once. Before the marriage I have now. And it was with a colored boy."

Eliza was shocked to hear that. Miss Marion was a southern debutante as far as she understood. Many photographs showcased her youthful splendor. She and Mr. Buchanan had built a life together, a public one too. Now, it was time for Eliza to learn of Miss Marion's private life.

"I met him because he was working at a party." She told Eliza. "And he was so handsome. My, he could just take your breath way."

A young Miss Marion walked through the halls of her parent's Great House. She stopped in her tracks when she spotted him, once again they made eye contact. He stood there in the parlor with a silver platter in hand, standing stiffly beside her father who sat in a large chair.

"More liquor." She could hear her father's voice, but could not see him from behind the chair. The boy began walking away from him, opting to get bottles from the cellar.

He looked to Marion with just as much enthusiasm as she did to him. With a nod of the head, he was on his way. As he walked down the hall, it tickled his fancy to know that she followed closely behind. The click of her heels and ruffling of her dress continued until he reached the cellar.

After descending down curved steps, walking across the foyer, traveling down a hall and making his way down more steps, he reached the cellar. He strategically left the door open, just enough for any southern belle to find her way right behind him.

Soon after he stepped inside, he found that the door shut. It was dark as ever and he no longer could hear her. He knew the area like the back of his hand, and so he was able to make his way to the nearest lantern. After the striking of a flint, the lantern lit up. He looked around the room, then there she was.

She stepped closer to him. "Do you have a name?"

"Emil." He answered. Marion hadn't spoken to a black man so casually before, it almost had her at a loss for words. She stared at him in awe, a smile spread across her face.

"Well, I'm Marion." She told him.

"I know." He answered. They both laughed.

"How can I see you again, Emil?" Marion asked.

"Did you get to be together?" Eliza asked. Miss Marion once again squeezed her hand, pressing her lips together.

"If you love this man, don't let him slip through your fingers." She advised. "Don't let something such as color keep you from being happy."

"And suppose it's not just color?" Eliza asked. "Suppose there are other factors?"

"Well what would that be, dear?" Miss Marion asked, and Eliza feared to answer. She didn't want Miss Marion to think lowly of her for associating with a gangster. "My advice is to continue seeing each other, even if it is in secret. At least you'll know where you stand."

"Thank you, Miss Marion." Eliza told her. "I think I should get back to finishing up around here."

"Of course." Miss Marion nodded understandably. "If you wish to leave early, you may. Take it easy, alright?"

"Thank you, Miss Marion." Eliza told her before getting her things and heading out. After making it to the ground floor of the building, she walked out into the open air. Cars all tried to drive around each other in the street, cutting one another off and going in all directions.

While walking to her bus stop, Eliza heard her name called out.

"Eliza!" A man called. When she turned around, it was Herbert Johnson. The handsome negro man who met her at her other job. "Are you catching a bus?"

"I'm trying to." She smiled as he approached her. He noticed her uniform, then tried to not mention it out loud. A glamorous night club singer such as her working as a maid, that was a sight to see.

"A girl like you shouldn't be on a bus." He told her. "How about I give you a ride?"

"You have a car?" Eliza asked. Herbert pointed behind Eliza to a parked car. Eliza could hardly believe her eyes. "You have a model A?"

"And it's all yours to ride in." He smiled. "We can even go somewhere and you can take it for a spin yourself."

"You'd really let me do that?" Eliza asked in surprise.

"Anything for you, Eliza." Herbert said as they both walked toward the car.
