Astyr was sitting in the front seat staring out the window as they drove to school the next day. The scenery was passing in a blur as Glin drove at breakneck speeds down the two-lane road that led to the small town where their school was found. There had been a small argument before leaving the house between Hakon and Glin over who would get the honor of driving but Glin had refused point-blank to crawl into the backseat of Hakon's Camaro. Astyr had volunteered to sit in the back with Gunnar but Glin had made a fuss about that as well very nearly causing them all to be late. The only way to move things along had been to just give in to him and let him have his way.

So Hakon and Gunnar were sitting in the back of Glin's black Maserati Quattroporte as they pulled into the student parking lot. Fortunately, it was so close to time for the bell to ring that there wasn't anyone present to see their grand entrance. Astyr started walking quickly to class with Gunnar without a word to Glin. She was already tired of his attitude and the way he hovered over her like a black cloud, and it had only been two days. She couldn't believe she had to put up with this for two and a half more years.

They entered the class together just as the bell rang and took their seats before the teacher started taking attendance. The class started as usual for a Monday morning with Mrs. Morgan giving them a chapter to read to themselves. They were all silently following instructions when the door opened. Everyone looked up to see who it was and there were a few gasps of surprise as Glin walked in.

Besides being tall and attractive in a quirky way, Glin was dressed entirely in his customary black leather. He had on tight pants and high leather boots with a long coat over his black, tailored, button-down shirt. With his reverse mullet haircut which left the back sticking straight up in spikes, he stood out in the small school like an ink-stain on white linen.

It had been decided that Laure would stay home and only Glin would enroll in classes with Astyr since Tyr, Grima and the Falkors were sure that it would attract too much attention if two unusually blond teenagers were to suddenly enroll in the middle of the semester. Glin had insisted that it would be he who accompanied Astyr since protecting her was his main priority and there was no talking him down since the arguments that he was a little too outlandish just washed right over him.

He looked down his nose imperiously at the class and it was clear that he was taking in every person in the room and judging them to be unfit. He walked over to the teacher's desk with long strides and placed the slip of paper that she had to sign on the edge of her desk. Mrs. Morgan snapped her jaw shut and picked up the paper using only her thumb and forefinger. She looked from the paper to Glin and back again. "You are Glin Elversen?" She asked him.

He stared at her rudely and answered in a bored voice, "Obviously."

She cleared her throat and had no idea how to respond. She quickly signed the slip and handed him a textbook. "Please take a seat, Glin"

Glin looked up and around the class to see the seating choices and instead of walking to any of the empty seats, walked over to Gunnar, whose desk was beside Astyr's. He stopped beside Gunnar and just stood there waiting for Gunnar to get up.

"Can I help you with something?" Gunnar asked with a straight face.

"Yes," Glin said, "You can let me sit here."

Gunnar raised his eyebrows but made no move to vacate his seat. "This is my desk so you'll have to find somewhere else."

Mrs. Morgan rose from her chair. "Is there a problem Glin?" She asked loudly.

"No, there isn't." He answered her smoothly. "I'm just waiting for Gunnar to move so I can sit here."

Everyone in the class was staring at Glin and Gunnar and waiting eagerly to see who was going to win this battle. "Glin, I'm sorry but that is Gunnar's desk. Go find one of the empty ones and get to work reading the chapter."

Gunnar looked up at him with a smirk on his face and watched in amusement as Glin walked away. Glin walked over to an empty desk and instead of sitting down, he picked it up easily and swung it over and placed it right behind Astyr's chair. The whole class started whispering and pointing at Glin and Astyr but he ignored them and sat down with his long legs stretched out into the aisle.

Mrs. Morgan just shook her head in exasperation and let him have his way. Astyr was beginning to fear that that would be a common occurrence.

The rest of the day was just as bad. Glin was rude and condescending to students and teachers alike and he would get surly whenever a teacher tried to force him to sit anywhere other than where he wanted. Mrs. Kane was the teacher who got the closest to sending him to the office when Glin refused to take a seat in the section for boys in her carefully arranged grouping of voices. He finally gave in when faced with the possibility of detention. He wouldn't be able to follow Astyr to cheer practice if he was stuck in the library so he made sure that he still had sight of Astyr from where he sat and adamantly kept silent while the rest of the class practiced the songs for the upcoming Christmas concert.

At lunch he tried to make Hakon move so that he could sit between him and Astyr but Hakon refused to give way. A few of the girls sitting at the table gave him interested glances but he all but ignored them and sat on Astyr's other side.

Gwen, who was sitting across from her with Dean by her side flipped her hair back and started to ask Glin all about himself. "So where are you from, Glin, and why did you move here in the middle of the semester?"

Glin gave her a look similar to what someone would give to a questionable substance on the bottom of their footwear, but Astyr nudged him in the side with her elbow and gave him a glare.

"Come on, Glin." She said. "Don't be shy. It'll do you good to make some new friends."

He sneered at her with his upper lip curled in distaste.

Jenny jumped in at this point. "Don't be afraid, Glin. We're all real friendly round these parts." She gave him a wide smile and was almost fluttering her eyelashes at him.

He turned and looked her up and down and kept the sneer on his face the whole time. Before he could say anything disastrously rude, Astyr poked him again in his side and this time she didn't make it a gentle nudge.

"Be nice Glin." Astyr said sternly. "You're stuck here so you might as well make the best of it."

"Fine." He practically spat the word out he was so angry. "I'm from Liechtenstein."

Everybody stared at him in disbelief for a moment before smothered laughs started to erupt around the table. He glared around in a dare for anyone to make fun of where he was from and people got themselves under control.

Gwen shushed Dean and patted him on his arm to make him stop. "You speak English very well for someone from Liechtenstein, Glin. What language do people there speak, usually?"

Glin almost grunted in annoyance that she kept up the interrogation. "The national language is German, but lots of people know French, Italian and English, too. Only knowing one language is looked down upon there." He gave her a mocking grin and Jenny took the opportunity to jump in with a question.

"So what made you move here?" Jenny asked with a bright smile. She was clearly into Glin despite his abrasiveness.

This was a tricky subject and Tyr, Grima and Frey had sat with Glin for some time the previous evening coming up with his cover story. Astyr waited for him to answer; she didn't make any motion to help him out by giving any information for him.

He yawned widely before bothering to reply. "I'm here as a foreign exchange student. My parents are friends with Mr. Falkor and they asked him if I could come here to get a taste of American culture."

Jenny practically swooned at this and Ginny rolled her eyes. "A foreign exchange student!" Jenny exclaimed in delight. "That's so romantic. You just ask me if you need any help getting settled in, ok."

Glin looked at her in confusion. She obviously didn't realize that he was treating everyone around him like dirt because he really didn't want to have anything to do with any of them. He turned to Astyr and told her it was time for her to show him where the next class was.

"Oh, I can take you." Jenny said quickly getting up and grabbing her bag. "It's so cool that we have all our classes together."

Astyr couldn't stop herself from chuckling. "Yeah, Glin, Jenny can show you." She said, making a point of staying in her seat. "I'm sure she'll take real good care of you."

Glin's eyes widened in surprise. Astyr had just maneuvered him into leaving with another girl. He stood up and crossed his arms over his chest and waited for Astyr to get up. She refused to give in to him and took her time finishing the rest of her sandwich.

Jenny came around and hooked her arm around his. "Come on, Glin. You don't have to wait for Astyr; she knows where the class is." She tried pulling him towards the door but he held his ground which resulted in her being pulled back against him. They almost crashed to the ground together but were saved by Glin grabbing Jenny and holding her up until she found her balance. She clung tightly to him and looked up at him with a sappy expression on her face.

"Thank you for saving me, Glin." She said in a soft voice. "Being a hero suits you."

There were loud groans from all around the table at that and everyone started to tease Jenny about her crush. She blushed and turned to go ahead to class without a word. Glin just stood there and watched her leave with a sardonic expression on his face. Ginny stood and quickly rushed after her friend to console her.

The rest of the day passed slowly and by the time cheerleading practice was finished, with Glin sitting on the grass by the track watching the whole time, Astyr was tired and ready to go home. She came out of the locker room to find Glin standing with Hakon and Gunnar who were already waiting to leave. They walked together to the parking lot and when they got there they found a small crowd around Glin's car.

"Is this yours?" Dean asked loudly.

Glin pulled the remote key out of his pocket and clicked the unlock button. There were exclamations of awe from a few of the boys as the lights blinked a couple of times. Astyr decided to skip the testosterone fueled discussion of automotive technicalities by getting in and shutting the door. While she was waiting for the boys to get finished talking she noticed Jenny sending wistful looks over in Glin's direction. Astyr couldn't help but be amazed at how girls always seemed to fall quickly for the supernatural guys. She was starting to think that maybe it was a pheromone thing. Of course, it was possible that living in such a tiny place, any new face was bound to attract attention and Astyr couldn't deny that Glin was pretty exotic.

The boys finally got rid of the car's fan club and they all drove home in silence.
