《Free Your Mind》Chapter Twelve: Population: One

Nothing more than a dry breeze could be felt as the man walked through the deserted streets of the once bustling town. Each step he took on the unkempt pavement echoed between the remains of the old brick-built structures. The vibrant colors of their exteriors long since deteriorated away. Even with eerily placed mannequins that were now the stand-ins for the townsfolk, it all felt still, empty, and lifeless.

The store fronts that once housed various mom and pop businesses were nothing more than dilapidated shells of their former selves. They remained only a memory that continued to fade away each day. What remained standing of these buildings was a sad sight to see, a community once built up by a group of people now was home to none. Vehicles from all different decades littered the roads throughout, shiny paint now matte from lack of care. Their owners seem to haven't set foot within their rusting metal frames for many years.

Sat around the town were signs, gas prices, menus, and billboards that were frozen in time. Old advertisements and information displayed on them were now long since outdated and sun bleached away. Writing that was once bold, now is barely legible to anyone unfamiliar to them. Once freshly printed designs of happy families, beverages, menu options, and businesses were peeling from their designated spots, falling onto the ground below.

The nature that was manicured by gardeners now seeped through the uneven pavement. Even with lively shades of green finding their way back into a town once inhabited, the area still felt soulless. Maybe a lifetime ago there would've been at the very least a bird's chirp, or a dog's bark in the distance, but no more could any resemblance of a population be sensed nearby.

The man walked up to a group of four mannequins, staged how the citizens of the once thriving town may have gone about the average day. Just like the others around them, they were done up to resemble a picture-perfect family. The decay and faded manor of the mannequins seemed no different from the dozens of plastic people posed within the town. But what drew him to this false family, was the smallest one of the group. Stood out from the rest with their perfect postures, the doll, dressed as a little girl, had a tilt to her stature. The face of the figure seemed, loose in a way.

A tinge of curiosity filled the man, the closer he got to the mannequin people, a faint odor seemed to fill his lungs. Without thinking, he lifted his hand towards the face of the posed, plastic girl. Slowly in order to satisfy his growing need for answers, he carefully pulled the molded face piece off the mannequin. Along with the foul smell now flooding out from within the plastic casing, came a sight only hell could conjure up.
