《that's life » s. hyde》[05] that disco episode

The gang all sat around in the Formans' basement, playing cards. Donna, Eric, and Fez were on the couch, Hyde and Kelso were in chairs on either side of the table, and Izzy was in Hyde's lap yet again.
"The game is Anaconda." Eric, said, passing out cards. "Big Ace, Eight Ball, Red Lady, Jackson, High Brow, Wild Man-"
"Oh my god, Michael!" Jackie shrieked. "They opened up a disco!"
"Where at?" Kelso asked.
"In Kenosha." Jackie gasped. "You could wear your David Bowie butt huggers." She said, before she started dancing like a fool to the music only playing in her head.
"Michael! That would be super!" Hyde said sarcastically.
Kelso scowled. "Laugh if you want, man, but my butt looks pretty good in those."
"Come on. Are you guys crazy? I mean, a disco? No way!" Eric said.
Donna shrugged. "I dunno, it might be fun to go dancing."
"Or we could go!" Eric said, correcting himself.
"I got nothing, I fold." Kelso said.
Hyde looked up from his cards in Izzy's hands. "Well, man, if you're out, go make some popcorn." He looked over at Jackie, who was still madly swaying. "And take her with you."
"What is disco?" Fez asked.
"Disco is from hell, ok?" Hyde said. "And not the cool part of hell with all the murderers, but the lame ass part where the really bad accountants live."
"Lies." Izzy said, running a hand through Hyde's curls. "Disco's fun. A lot of super cute guys hang out at disco clubs."
Hyde grinned at Donna. "Okay I'm down."
Donna leaned over and looked at Kelso's cards. "'Scuse me, what are you doing?" Eric asked.
"Looking at Kelso's cards."
"That's cheating!"
From upstairs, Jackie yelled, "Eric! I can't find the popcorn!"
Eric jumped up to go help, then stopped and turned around. "Hey, um, Donna, why don't you take a little look at my cards, then you won't have to wait for me to leave!" He said, trying to stick his cards in her face, but she batted his arm out of the way. "No, come on, take a look. Take a look, tell me what I have, you cheater!" He held his cards right in her face despite her trying to shove him away.
"You got nothing!"
"Yeah, and I'm gonna bluff, so watch out!" Eric said before running out.
"Donna has stuff for Eric, yes?" Fez asked Hyde and Izzy.
"Not stuff, thing. Donna has a thing for Eric."
Izzy laughed "Why do you have a thing for Eric? I'm the hotter twin."
"This is true." Hyde said.
Donna sighed. "He makes me laugh, he doesn't ask me stupid questions. He's smart, and... you know."
"No, I don't know." Hyde said.
Fez raised his hand, saying, "I know! I know!" Hyde pointed at him to "call" on him. "It is because Eric is noble, and a woman wants her first love making to be in the arms of a man she can trust!"

Izzy made a face. "Please don't use the words 'love making' when talking about my brother."
"Fez?" Donna said. Fez looked up. "Go make popcorn."

That evening, at the dinner table, Eric decided to ask his parents about the disco. "I want to talk to you about our curfew on Saturday. We're going to a disco in Kenosha."
"Ooh, Disco dancing in Kenosha. That's quite a drive!" Kitty said, laughing.
"Can we push our curfew to two?" Izzy asked.
"Mmm..." Kitty hummed.
"One thirty? Pretty please?"
"Mmm..."
"Or one?" Eric asked.
"Done!" Kitty said, eliciting a glare towards Eric from Izzy.
"So! Who's going?" Red asked.
Kitty smiled. "Oh, Donna, I'm sure, they're practically dating. Steven too, right Isabelle?"
"Can I have some gas money?" Eric asked to change the subject.
Red looked at Izzy. "Dating? Since when?"
Izzy sighed. "Daddy, no one's dating. About that gas money...?"
Kitty gasped. "Remember, Red, when we used to go dancing at the Avalon on Mackinaw Island?" Red nodded, smiling sweetly at his wife.
"Oh, Mackinaw! Now that's quite a drive! I bet the mileage is just-" Eric did a hand gesture to indicate the mileage must have been very large, much larger than Kenosha.
Kitty stood up and started dancing and singing, "Oh, oh! Volare! Oh! Volare! Oh, oh!"
"You see what you did? You got your mother started!" Red said.
-
Saturday night, the gang was all gathered in the driveway, getting ready to leave for the disco. Kitty was taking pictures of them all, and Midge was standing next to her, watching.
Hyde walked up to Izzy. "I didn't expect you to come." She said with a smile, leaning on the car.
"How could I say no to you, Izzy Bee?" He said, standing next to her, now leaning on the car too. He looked her up and down, admiring the outfit Jackie had forced her into. A short, billowy white top had been tugged down to make it seem to Kitty like it covered her midriff, when it definitely did not.
"Okay, let's take some pictures!" Kitty said cheerfully as the group collectively groaned and moved to group together. "Steven, get in closer to Izzy."
Steven grinned and put an arm around her. "If you insist."
"Ok, let's all schmoosh together! Ok, big smiles! Very nice!" She took several pictures of everyone, Kelso trying to show off his butt huggers in over half. "Ok, now, just girls! Look how pretty! Smile!" She took a picture of Donna, Jackie, and Izzy, and off to the side the boys stood staring in awe of the girls.
"Now boys!" Kitty continued directing. "Oh, so handsome!" She took yet another picture in which Kelso's butt huggers were the main feature. "Ok, now lets-"
"Hey, mom, why don't I take a picture of you?" Eric offered, a sugary smile on his face.
Kitty stopped. "No! No, no, no. Ok, you'll be late, bye now!"

The quick sendoff made Izzy and Eric high-five. The gang all got into the car, and Hyde walked over and kissed Kitty on the cheek, muttering a quick, "You're the best."
He walked back into the car, where Izzy was waiting. He slid into the car and pulled her onto his lap. "Why were you talking to my mom?" She asked with a smile.
Hyde just looked at her. "Your mom's cool."
They paused.
And then broke into laughter.
"Seriously, why were you talking to my mom?" Izzy asked again.
"Ah, she helped me with some stuff." Izzy raised her eyebrows at the response, but didn't question it further.
-
At the disco, Kelso was dancing around, making a complete fool of himself. He looked around, realized he was alone, and ran to the table where the rest of the gang was sitting.
"Jackie, where'd you go?" He asked.
Jackie sat there, annoyed. "I had to get something for you to bite on, cause I told everyone you were having a seizure!"
"When do they play the disco music?" Fez asked.
Izzy furrowed her brows. "This is disco music."
"No, no. This is samba."
"Fez, it's disco, man. It's crap!" Hyde said.
Fez listened to the song for a moment. "Whoa, I think I like this crap!" He stood up, extending a hand out to Jackie. "Come, Jackie! Let's get down!"
"No, I think I'm a little tired." She looked away, but Fez turned her head back toward him.
"Don't resist me mama. It's boogie time!" He pulled Jackie out of her chair and onto the dance floor.
Izzy turned to Kelso, laughing. "I think you just lost your date!"
"Yeah, well it's cool cause Jackie and I are history!"
On the dance floor, Fez and Jackie were, for lack of a better term, killing it. At one point, Fez even picked up Jackie, spinning her around effortlessly.
"She must not weigh that much." Eric said to Kelso. The two continued dancing, and Jackie ended up putting her leg around Fez
"Is she touching his ass?!" Kelso said, disturbed.
"Wow, they are really good!" Eric said.
Kelso huffed and crossed his arms. "Yeah, if you wanna dance that way."
Izzy rested her chin on her palm. "I would love to dance that way."
"You wanna dance?"
Izzy looked over at Hyde, confused. He seemed serious, and was already standing with a hand outstretched towards her. She fixed her top and gingerly took his hand. "Sure."
The two got up and started dancing as Abba's "Angel Eyes" came on. The two swayed to the music, Hyde looking down at Izzy, and Izzy looking up at him.
"You dance." She said with a soft smile. "This is a side of you I've never seen."
"Yeah. Actually, you're my first dance."
Izzy giggled. "Are you sure?"
Hyde hung his head, laughing slightly before looking back up. "Alright, alright, stop laughing, Izzy Bee. This is what your mom was helping me with."
Izzy nodded. She studied the curve of his jaw, her eyes wandering up to his lips.
"This is nice." He said. She hummed in agreement.
Hyde dipped her, and when he brought her up their noses were almost touching. "Izzy Bee, I feel like I wanna-"
"Hey man, mind if I cut in?" Hyde let out a small sigh of frustration and turned to look at the guy who was standing there.
"Ah, we're kinda in the middle of something here, man." Hyde said.
"Steven, don't be rude." Izzy said, letting go of Hyde. Immediately he missed the feeling of her hands on his shoulders. She turned to the guy, who quickly pulled her in and started dancing.
Hyde walked off, his feet dragging slightly. He headed back to the table to see Donna and Eric still sitting there.
"Hey man." Eric said, tugging out a seat for Hyde, who practically fell into it.
Hyde stayed silent.
"I didn't know you could dance, Hyde." Donna said, trying to lighten the mood. Hyde just nodded.
"Wow, look at them." Eric said, watching his sister dance and laugh with this new guy. "They seem to be having a good time." Eric stopped when he saw the look on Hyde's face. "And I mean 'good' like the Swedish sense of the word, so... awful."
-
On the way home, Izzy sat on Hyde's lap. His arms were around her waist, and everything seemed to be back to normal.
When they got back to the Formans' house, Izzy started to head to the door.
"Wait, Izzy. Can I talk to you for a sec?" Hyde asked, his hands in his pockets.
"Yeah, go for it." She said, leaning against the front door.
"So, uh, I was kinda trying to say something to you before that guy cut in earlier, and I-"
"Oh! Yeah! I gave him my number!" She said, running a hand through her hair. "I was right, wasn't I? Cute boys go to disco clubs."
Hyde nodded slowly. "Uh... what's... his... name?" He asked awkwardly.
She smiled slightly at the thought of him. "Richard."
Hyde scoffed. "Dick?"
Izzy blinked a few times. "No. That's rude."
"His name is Dick."
"It's Richard."
"Dick!"
"Stop!"
Hyde started laughing, but stopped when he saw that Izzy was frowning. "Aw, Izzy Bee..." He said, pulling her in for a hug.
"What did you want to tell me?"
He let her go slowly. "Huh?"
"Earlier?"
"Oh. Uh... I was gonna say..." He stammered, trying to make something up. "I was gonna say that your mom is a great dancer, and you should pass on the message."
Izzy paused. "Okay. I will." She brushed a stray curl out of his face. "Goodnight, Hyde."
"Night."
Hyde started to walk away, but stopped when he was down the porch. "Hey, Izzy?" He called, as she was shutting the door. She opened it and peeked her head back out. "Are you gonna go out with him?"
She smiled. "I think so."

8 187Tales from the Triverse
Tales from the Triverse is part detective drama, part fantasy adventure and part space opera. I’m influenced by the likes of Iain M Banks, Isaac Asimov and ND Stevenson and work including The Wire and Gotham Central. It begins with an incident two hundred years ago which crashed three parallel universes together. Portals open up in 18th century London, sending England down a very different path. We pick up events in the 1970s, with the Metropolitan Police having established a new department to handle portal-related criminal activity. The story is about intolerance, immigration, multiculturalism and power. It’s about what happens when incompatible viewpoints are weaponised to seed discontent, and the efforts of some to create a fairer world. In the tradition of the best science fiction, fantasy and crime fiction, I’m using the setting to examine themes that matter to me in the real world. Who is it for?If you like science fiction or fantasy, or a mix of both, this is for you. It’s my first foray into crime fiction, but I hope if you’re a fan that you’ll enjoy yourself - especially if you’re looking for something a bit different. I write fiction that is optimistic, progressive and empathetic. Bad things can happen to good people in the stories, but the overall arc tends to be hopeful. Note that if it were a movie, Tales from the Triverse would be a 15 certificate in the UK.
