《The Ship That Went to Sea》Ch 2.5

Lark watched as Petrianna retreated from the tavern. He had a feeling his “please don't hate me” had fallen on deaf ears. On the other hand she had very literally saved his life twice today and the sun was not even setting. Maybe she even liked him. He was a dashing rogue stealing hearts and necklaces from all the ladies after all.

He decided the best thing to do would be to try and go and find the other pirates from Esmerelda's ship. He strode down the streets with the easy and to his mind well earned confidence of someone who had be a breath away from death twice before dinner. He was going to be an excellent pirate he thought to himself. One might argue that both of his encounters today proved the contrary but hey! There are no owlbears on ships. And if his future captain had thrown a knife in his chest it was only to see what Petra could do. She didn't actually really try to murder him. He strode through back alleys taking random turns until he found himself not just on a main road but in the square where a large market was set up.

He walked through the crowd pinching this and that from passersby mostly just to see what he could get away with and what he could find. He noticed a small crowd of people gathering around a lamp post on a corner. Lark quickly realized that there must be someone preforming there based on the ohhs ahhs and applause. This was perfect. The people were already pressed close jostling each other a bit, and best of all they were distracted. He took something from nearly every person crowding around and then slinked off to one of the side alleys once the crowd started to break up. Luckily for the performer at least some of the crowd still had a few coins to toss his way. One from just beyond the crowd, a drow half elf by the look of him, whom he had not taken from strode forward. Lark was not close enough to hear the conversation but it seemed liked they knew each other and were not particularly happy about it. All at once the performer tossed up his quarter staff spun it around above and behind him then caught it with two hands near the bass and swung it hard down to stop just in front of the half elf's shoulder . The performer turned and walked away the half elf stayed a moment before walking off in another direction. This seemed to Lark a very good opportunity to practice following someone. He was curious as to what the nature of the conflict between the two was. He decided to follow the performer. If he stopped to draw a crowd again their would be more pockets to pick.

Lark followed him keeping what he thought was a reasonable distance for the well traveled street. Then the man turned down a smaller street with fewer people and more things that could be knocked over. A tower of empty crates clattered to the ground and fell on Lark as he tried to sneak past. Tornas turned around immediately advanced and held his staff ready and asked “who the hell were you and why are you following me?” Lark was spared having to answer when the back door of the Pig and Bell opened.

“ what is the ruckus?” the pot bellied old inn keep asked. Tornas turned to look at him “oh Tornas so good to see you again. You know your still is giving me great business. Now what is all of this why did you knock over the crates?”

“I didn't knock them over it was him.” Tor said pointing at the spot where Lark had been a moment before. “blasted little sneak” Tornas swore.

“Yes the sneaky ones like the alleys. That is why I have the big pile of easily tipable crates, as an alarm system.” Barty Brownboots said. “now come on inside I have your cut of the earnings.”
