《RELINQUISH》Chapter 4

A few minutes later, the commotion began to subside. Deo also began to be able to control himself not to sweat much more than what he was currently experiencing… Whereas my eyes were only focused on that wondrous magic sword.
“Can I touch it?” I asked this random guy again.
When my fingers were floating while waiting for permission, this guy drew his sword away. “I don’t think that is a good idea.”
Discouraged, I said. “Yeah… I was actually quite able to feel the heat. Which means you are the only one who can touch it without burning your own hand… How magical...”
Hearing what I was just saying, Deo came up to me and the random guy, then moved his hand towards the sword... Maybe he also wants to try to feel how hot it actually is. “Ah… I see…” he said.
Not gonna lie, I'm a bit jealous of him.
Because that sword… All of those swords that they had received after being struck by the lightning. The shape is not too wide and very slim. Transparent like glass, but with a little blue light like a LED. It looks so magnificent… Elegant… Lovely… I want it!
I really want to touch it!
So again, I move my hand closer and even closer.
I know this sword’s owner is looking at me right now with an expression that clearly says “Are you really that dumb?”
But I don’t care…
He drew it again further away, but I’m also getting closer…
“Dude… Stop…”
I can’t hear him.
“You really gonna hurt yourself!”
And that’s love baby-
Then an electric pole behind me suddenly fell for an unknown reason.
I turned my head as I heard the warning screams from many people around me, but yet I don’t know how to react fast enough to that, so then I just stand right here, knowing it will kill me in an instant.

That’s where this random guy, the one that I was talking to earlier with a sword in his right hand, shifted and held that heavy electric pole alone in his left hand.
He moved the pole right next to me, while yelling at the one who had cut the bottom of this pole with his magic sword as a test object.
This is the second time where this random guy got everyone’s attention…
And here I am, the main character who was saved by the temporary side character.
Here buddy! Just take my role if you want it so bad! I’m done!
~~~~~
“You okay?”
“Yeah…” I replied.
Everyone around started to talk to each one of them who was chosen by the crafty lightning snake. Asking for how big their strength is and is it the same lightning that gives them a greatly increased physical strength, or not.
The answer is, they agree with that shot…
So it’s not only The beautiful magical sword, but they also have this cool superhuman strength… A gift from the… God?
Or Evil?
“Daniel… Let’s find some place quieter than here, okay?” Deo tapped my shoulder while waiting for me to follow him from the back.
He is right…
The situation suddenly got even more exciting because of all this nonsense. And he’s not used to being in a place like that.
I say goodbye to the random guy, before moving to another place with Deo.
~~~~~
“Here…” He said it right in the middle of a wooden bridge.
Knowing there was no one nearby, then he continued to talk. “Damn… I’m so jealous!”
“Ah! So you’re the same as me!” Replying to Deo with a relieved expression, this guy suddenly sighs as he’s talking.
“Your face… Stop it. So annoying.”
I laughed after hearing that.

“Oh yeah… I think you should call Fanya right now... Or even earlier.” Deo’s giving me my cell phone which was left in the internet cafe before the incident.
“Why?” I asked.
“Because you’re stupid.”
“Why don’t you then? Why does it have to be me who calls her.”
“Because you’re stupid.”
I gave up after hearing that response twice in a row. But it turns out that the phone connection is not working when I called her. So I told Deo about it.
“Expected.” Deo said it in such a flat tone.
“Then why’d you ask me to do so?!”
“So that my guess is proven?”
“Oh… Make sense.” I admit my defeat.
“But all of this… What we have just witnessed. Don’t you feel… You know…”
I think I know where this conversation is going, so I replied.
“Doesn’t make any sense? Yeah… And everything will change for the worse from now on. I’m sure of it.”
“I didn't actually think that far, but then why don’t you express it? The way you acted for a moment with everyone…?”
“I don’t know, Deo. Maybe because it won't change anything?”
“Ah… I did it again… Sorry. And also, I forgot You always like that, don’t you? But don’t get me wrong… Sometimes the way you act can actually solve the problem. Maybe… I was just a little nervous earlier.”
“Yeah, I know.” I said it while kicking his ankle with an exaggerated motion.
“It's getting dark already… We can talk about all of this with Fanya, so let’s go home, shall we?” Deo punched my arm really hard while asking about what to do next.
“You also have a family to worry about, eh?” He laughed.
“Deo… You know it’s hard for me to act with the way you said it, you asshole…”
“I know… And I enjoy it.” Deo walks away, leaving me alone watching the afternoon sky reflected above the puddles of the river. Thinking about how Deo can talk so lightly with the fact that both of his parents have died a long time ago…
but his expression didn't show any sadness at all, so I just played along.
“I see…” I smiled as I said goodbye to Deo.
How could this man be so panicked when something happened to someone else, but not when something far worse happened to his family and even his own parents?
Even as far as I can remember, his parents were the nicest people I've ever met.
In the past, Deo also often boasted of the goodness of his father and mother towards himself, and often subconsciously said that he really loved his parents from when he was just a child, until right before they both died.
~~~~~
Okay, what was I supposed to do here again?
Right now I'm just trying to remember all the things we've talked about earlier so I don't forget it in the future… Yeah... Maybe just that one.
Or should I just go home already?
But damn… Watching the river flow has never been this fun before…
I can enjoy this…
But…
Not too long until something that is floating on the surface of the river, passes me with the water around it turning red.
I can even smell the iron scent from here…
Blood dominates the flow of the river…
A dead body…
Meh…
This happened faster than I expected.
Yeah it’s late night already. I better get going…
God complex
A hero is summoned to another world, vanquishes evil, yadda yadda, saves the kingdom and lives happily ever after. There is no such hero in this story. Just a desperate youth with great ambition and very little to lose. A zero to hero style story set in a country clearly inspired by modern USA with just as many issues and the minority of mages often pulling strings from the shadows. I am also hoping the whole thing won't turn out edgy enough to cut me. I want to rely on actual good writing rather than cheap powertrip gimmicks. edit: Please don't mind Zetari's salty review. He is quite literally making up any use of the torture and human experimentation trope and says MC is blank after 4 chapters where he conveniently stops reading just at the start of his first character development. For extra entertainment, I will be uploading chapters two at a time and compose a relevant poem through the chapter names. [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]
