《Sword of Savage Desires》10. Who is lying?

Zhelan did not care what the result of the bout was. He did not even turn back when he heard the crowd cheering loudly followed by a man roaring in victory. His focus was all on the voice he had heard a few moments ago and he started to search for her frantically.
In his confusion and sudden and abrupt change in his life, Zhelan had totally forgotten about the two girls he had met or precisely, heard on the day he had ended up at Utira as a useless human. It was only when he heard the voice again that he remembered them.
However, to search for an unknown person in a huge crowd was impossibly difficult. The voice had been fleeting for a moment, just quick enough for him to catch it but not see the person to who it belonged.
There were a lot of ladies who fit the age of the voice he had heard and he could not conclude who among them he was looking for. Asking all of them and striking up a conversation with them just like that would make him seem lecherous and Zhelan was unwilling to do anything that would jeopardize his dignity.
The people of Utira, including the king, worshipped him and he wanted it to stay this way for eternity.
'Where did she go?' He wondered and moved away from the crowd, his eyes searching for any girl who could meet his expectation. But in vain. He did not find anyone who caught his fancy.
Eventually, after wasting a lot of energy just wandering around aimlessly, Zhelan gave up and let out a sigh of defeat.
'Looks like you are not destined to meet me.' He thought and clicked his tongue in disappointment. Anyway, the girl was just a distraction to him. He was attracted to her voice and that was it. Women did not faze him much and even when he was at the peak of his cultivation, he had disregarded all the girls and rejected their advancements.

Zhelan's only aim in life was to attain immortality, back then and even now.
"Young Master Zhelan."
Zhelan raised his brows and stared at the guard who had come all the way looking for him.
"What happened? Is something the matter?" Zhelan was used to being condescending all his life and even now, he did not hide his arrogance.
"I came to inform you that dinner is ready, Young Master Zhelan." The man kept his gaze fixed on the ground.
As Zhelan watched the guard, fragments of memory from the day he heard the voice came back to him, and his eyes widened slightly in excitement.
"Do you know any girl by the name Yazhu here?"
"Yazhu?" The guard raised his head and frowned in confusion. "Who is that Young Master? Is the lady your acquaintance?" He questioned and Zhelan examined him with his eyes narrowed.
"Yazhu was the one who informed the guards here of my presence."
Zhelan's attention was caught by one of the curious kids staring at him. So, he did not notice the guard's expression transforming drastically. The man was baffled and shocked and he stood speechless for a long time.
"There must a misunderstanding, Young Master Zhelan." The guard asserted after thinking about it for some time.
"What?" Zhelan still had his eyes fixed on the kid. So, he did not give much thought to the guard's words.
"I do not know who Yazhu is and I do not think there is anyone by that name in this kingdom."
Zhelan's eyes snapped to him immediately and the guard stiffened for a moment.
"It was our king who informed us about you, Young Master, and ordered us to bring you."
"What?" Zhelan was taken aback and he looked at the guard incredulously.
"Yes. Our king had ordered us to bring you back to the palace. But the physician intervened and we had to arrange for a room elsewhere." The guard revealed all that had happened before Zhelan gained consciousness.

'Was it the physician who made me stay in the shabby room?' He pondered and thought of the man he had heard the moment he was shifted to the room. Unlike Tian Ma, the physician knew who he was and his identity.
"Who is the physician? I want to meet him." Zhelan ordered. Since the man knew him, he could gain a thing or two from him about his issue.
Zhelan had been irked when he found himself in a dilapidated room at an inn the moment he woke up. He, who had been living in a spectacular mansion, had to make do with such an unkempt place, even though for most people in Utira, the room he was staying in was a place of luxury. However, he kept his complaints to himself. He was now a human with no powers and he did not wish to provoke anyone unnecessarily.
Moreover, it was just for two days. He would be leaving for Mount Dao the day after. Also, he had all the freedom in the small, shabby place with no one keeping eye on him at all times.
'Things do not seem that simple. I need to meet this physician.' He thought.
"I apologize, Young Master. You cannot meet him now. Master is not in Utira and we do not know when he will visit us again."
"What do you mean? Does he not belong to Utira?"
"No. Master only visits Utira if he wishes to. Otherwise, we will not be able to even locate him."
His words got Zhelan thinking. 'How coincidental it was that the physician was here when I landed in Utira. What is happening?' He thought. 'Looks Tian Ma and I need to have another conversation.'
"What about the two girls, Yazhu and another girl whose name I do not know? What do you know about them?"
"As I said before, Young Master. We do not know the ladies you are talking about."
"You must be mistaken. It was those two ladies who informed you about my presence." Zhelan's brows scrunched up and the intensity in his eyes made the guard tremble.
Even though he was older than him by a few years, the guard was still intimidated by Zhelan. His aura was too oppressive and unbearable. It was a new but frightening experience for him.
"No, Young Master. We did not meet any girls. You may ask the other guards too."
"Who carried me back to this room?" Zhelan's frown deepened as he thought about the bizarre situation.
"The three guards who are guarding your room and I." The man replied, still unable to comprehend what was happening. "You may speak to them if you do not believe me, Young Master Zhelan."
Just as the guard had stated, none of the guards had any idea about the two ladies Zhelan was speaking about. They did not even know anyone by the Yazhu in the kingdom; there was no such person in Utira at all.
Zhelan fell into deep thoughts and scrutinized the four guards in front of him. The situation was too peculiar and he could not make out the truth.
'Was it all my imagination?' As soon as the thought entered his mind, he shook his head in denial immediately. 'It cannot be. It was not my imagination, I heard them for sure and even now, the voice was not my illusion. In that case, either the guards are lying to me or...' Zhelan's eyes flashed, the light from the lantern in front of him reflecting in them. 'There is something I am overlooking, something I do not know. I did not imagine them, they were present at that time for sure.'

Fateless: The Silver Lining
It has been ten years of peace for the Union since the end of the great war with the eastern barbarian tribes, yet in the cold north of the Union's land, a new threat is looming. This time, an ambitious Lord is seeking to restore the yore pride of his kin, forcing the weakened Union into yet another unwanted war, as he ramps up the ranks of his army with thieves, murderers and mercenaries.* * *The temperature inside the forge was nearly twice as high as the one outside. A black-haired girl hammered a steel ingot into the shape of a blade. The heat of the steam was draining her stamina away, but her focus remained sharp as her sweat streamed down her face. Hit after hit, for hours, the sound of the hammering steel followed the rhythm of her breathing. Exhausted, she placed the blade into the water and wiped the sweat off her face using a drenched rag. Why are they screaming? Vatra dipped the rag back in the water, twisted it, and approached the window. Her mouth opened as her world shattered again into the living nightmare she had wilfully tried to forget. She bit her lips; it wasn’t a dream. The pulse of her heart rose. A cold sweat prickled her back. A mother was running, and a child was screaming. A torrent of smoke was emerging from the roof of her neighbour. Vatra’s eyes blinked. The mother lay on the ground, a spear through her back. A torch circled in the air and landed on the roof of her workshop. In the distance, a man wearing a banner well known to the world… Fateless is a philosophical medieval dark low fantasy centered on war, militaristic campaigns and geopolitical conflicts between multiple empires. This story follows the fate of Vatra, a former slave from the eastern Nar Empire who was raised in a culture far away from her own, forced into warfare against her will, and the fate of Lanaya, an ambitious half-angel exiled from her home whose existence is seen as heresy. As they wished for peace, both chose a path opposed to one another until their fate crossed. In this story where war dictates the law, love strikes them as a poisoned balm to which they grasp for with all their might, as it is in the darkest of times that the smallest flames may burn the brightest. * * * Tome 1 already completed and available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.ca/Fateless-Silver-Hugo-Emmanuel-Simard-Wallot/dp/B09LGSH1KK Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Hugo-Emmanuel-Simard-Wallot-100547579135891/ I will publish 1 chapter per week (sometimes 2 if the chapters are too short for my liking).

Magikind [Original]
The third millennia, a time of change and evolution. An era, where people, through countless generations, have evolved strange powers and abilities. Through several centuries of selective breeding, these beings, known as mages, have become part of the very foundations of society. However, some refused to change or adapt. They believed in purity and refused to interbreed with magikind. Known as the manush, they were a rarity among society. Now, in the fifth millennia, the manush are thought extinct. With magikind ruling the world, a three-way war grips society. In these uncertain times, a manush called Gin, will herald a new era for all Magikind. A story of how man could realistically evolve while still pushing boundaries. Disclaimer: Chapters will be edited once the first volume is done. Bear the beginning for the time being, and hopefully you can see my writing improving over time (I've learnt a lot on how to write because of this (though I'm still not perfect :P)) Proud Member of Writers to the End, WriTE The link to the pledged fictions PS. If you find the 'notes' too boring or too info-dumpy, feel free to skip them and just read the main chapters. They're there for the reader to understand Gin's world (written in the perspective of Gin). But later on, we can see some interactions between the main characters and the occasional references to his past in the notes, so it has its purpose.
