《Sword of Savage Desires》9. Fight among the humans

Zhelan stomped his feet in anger when he recalled Liu Yang's arrogant and mocking words and he felt his blood boil. But he could do nothing about it. The man was right. He had now become useless and he would only drag Liu Yang if he accompanied him.
But that did not stop Zhelan from loathing him. Liu Yang was the second person he despised the most and wished to kill him as brutally as possible. The man had wounded his ego and he was filled with vengeance, one which he vowed to take in the near future.
Gritting his teeth, he turned around and returned to the main street where the people were roaming everywhere. And just like before, they stopped when they saw him walk by them and to Zhelan, this was a boost to his pride. All that he had suffered under Liu Yang's harsh words vanished when he witnessed the looks of admiration all around him.
This was what he needed and what he reveled in. 'So what if you are powerful now, Liu Yang?' He scoffed and narrowed his eyes. 'Wait until I surpass you and become stronger than you. I will see how long you will remain complacent.'
Previously, he was still hesitating to go to Mount Dao. The place was perilous. But after being horribly humiliated and provoked by Liu Yang, he was now filled with determination and even though his journey was tough, he was willing to face the danger. He now had two goals in mind, Get back all that he had lost and attain immortality and crush Liu Yang and show him what he was worth.
With that thought in mind, he returned to his room and sat on the bed. A myriad of thoughts entered his mind and he slowly started to analyze his next course of action. All of a sudden, his eyes lit up when a notion struck his mind.

'Should I give it a try?' He wondered and sat cross-legged, taking the lotus position. 'Unless I try, I will not know. I just hope it works.'
Zhelan closed his eyes and took a deep breath before he focused all his energy on his Qi. If it was the previous him, his Qi would have responded to him right away, he did not even have to wait.
However, the current him had become useless, trash even. Even after waiting for a long time, all Zhelan felt was a void. He could not detect his Qi whatsoever and his spirits dwindled as moments passed. It was as though his life itself was over.
But Zhelan did not give up on his hope. Since Tian Ma had told him that he would get his answers on Mount Dao, there were still chances for his revival. With that thought, he gave up wasting his time doing fruitless things and laid down on the bed.
Unknowingly, he slipped into a deep slumber and by the time he woke up, the night had fallen over the kingdom of Utira. With a sigh, he got off the bed and even though it was night, he still heard chatters from outside.
'What is happening? What has got all the people excited?' He wondered and opened the door to take look. But from where he was, he found nothing worth his time.
Zhelan beckoned one of the guards who was stationed outside his room to protect him. "What is this noise? What is happening?"
"Young Master, every fortnight, there will be a sword-fighting contest and people are only preparing for it. It will be starting soon." The guard answered him respectfully and lowered his eyes. His king had already given him orders to take good care of their guest. Although he did not know who the man was and what he had done to make his king, the great Tian Ma of Utira, to bow before him, he still followed the orders with utmost precision.

"I see." Zhelan mused. "Let me take a look at the contest. Anyway, there is still time for dinner."
"As you say, Young Master."
Seeing the guard was about to follow him, Zhelan stopped and shook his head at him. "I will go alone. You stay here."
"But..."
Zhelan did not give him the opportunity to argue and turned around. Flicking his robes lightly, he left the man gaping at his back. He was just a nuisance anyway. Bringing him or any other guard around would only restrict his freedom. Zhelan had been a free bird since young and he disliked people following him, even if it was to protect him.
Moreover, he did not need any protection from anyone. 'Everyone here fears me. I wonder who would be bold enough to cross me and go against their king.' He sneered and proceeded in the direction he heard the noise from.
Zhelan did not even have to say a word. As soon as the people saw him, they made way for him, allowing him to pass by with ease. Some of the people in the crowd even tried to initiate a conversation with him. But he gave them no face and ignored them completely. Anyway, to him, they were undeserving of his attention.
Zhelan folded his hands and looked at the two men fighting vigorously inside the wooden ring while the crowd surrounded them.
'How boring!' He gibed and shook his head. Although the fight was unamusing, he still continued to watch it. Anyway, he had nothing else to do.
All of a sudden, the fight turned brutal when one of the men thrust the sword through the other man's stomach and his shirt was drenched with blood immediately.
Zhelan raised his brows when he saw the unexpected situation and his eyes gleamed with wicked intent. 'Now, this is interesting!' He thought and his lips arched up into a smirk.
The crowd was in an uproar as they waited for the victor to end the battle.
'I never knew fights here would be this vicious.' Zhelan thought and nodded to himself, his eyes not leaving the men even once. "Come on, kill him now. End his life in one slash." He muttered.
However, his attention broke when he heard a sweet, lovely voice from somewhere around him. It was the same gentle lady he had heard when he had been unconscious before he was shifted to a room and instinctively, he turned around to look for her.

In the grey-cloaked cityscape of modern London, student William Whiteswift has two secrets: the Fae walk among humanity, and they are just as vulnerable as us. His childhood was filled with them; they spawned nightmares and episodes, dreams and obsessions. The nightmares remain, of course, but the fae are his normal. Now, he heals them, for William is gifted. When he saves a faerie -- a humanoid fae -- from an injury he can’t explain, William is forced to let her stay. Finally, he may have taken on more than he can handle; Ainsel could uproot his life in seconds. Instead, she cracks a Pandora’s box of mysteries: someone just flipped her home on its head. And because of that, she did something unspeakable. And somehow, she doesn’t want to hurt him. The longer she stays, though, the crueler his nightmares grow. Worse, governments hide secrets, too: they know of faeries. To them, all fae are monsters fueled by solstices and equinoxes. As the autumn equinox approaches, the culling agency COURT hurries to track Ainsel down. With teams across the United Kingdom and Ireland -- iron-strong despite the region’s history -- they are nearing success. A world away, their country wounded, the faerie leaders hunger for justice. In the looming shadows of war and of Ainsel’s mistake, can a human and a faerie protect each other against their own kind? Could their plight mend rifts between bitter nations and bitterer people? Or will it, like past attempts at peace, shatter? Quick note! I hope you all enjoy the Irish (Irish Gaelic) words here and there! All are defined or explained within the text. This is my chance to show off speaking it at least somewhat decently. Still learning. ;D -K
