《Legacy of Earth》Chapter 17 – Slipping Away

"So tell me more about Memento Mori?" Gabrielle asked pouring them a drink, to pass the time the trio decided to just hunker down and wait for the Nuclear Storm to pass, within the sterile walls of her makeshift home the walls rattled from the strong winds and the lights in some areas would flicker now and then.

It reminded Alon of the occasional sandstorms that would make their way into his home back in Thaumasia where they would hide in the basement, light a candle and enjoy the quiet company.

"Depends, what has your government told you about us?" Dain smiled which prompted a scoff from Gabrielle. "Not pleasant things, words like Anarchist and Terrorists are best associated with you bunch." She chuckled as she took a sip of her homemade beer that she offered but all three of them settled for Juice to avoid getting drunk despite being provided with experimental anti-hangover medicine. Though Rachel herself admitted that the medicine would work mass produced and not homemade.

"You think we can get her to join us?" Alon whispered to Tsuna as he took a drink, a part of him wanted to taste the beer as well.

"No idea but we should let Fenrir do his work," Tsuna answered but it was clear that Tsuna was interested in her joining as well. The two continued to discuss and debate in almost the same manner as Alon's first conversion with Hayato as well. Which made Alon realize something and then scooted over to Tsuna.

"I never got around to asking you this but why do you fight?" Alon asked him, for a moment Tsuna was silent which made Alon regret asking as he might have struck a nerve with him, he was about to change the subject but Tsuna spoke up.

"I was living in a mining colony as a serf, unlike the comforts of your home the living conditions of that colony was almost the same as this place but with better facilities," Tsuna said as he chuckled in that fond memory. "But we rebelled and tried to escape."

"Then it worked right? Considering you're here with us?"

"As much as I love to say yes but that's where it gets worse," Tsuna said, there was a tired look on his face indicating that what happened after that was only worse. "You don't have to bring it up if you're not comfortable talking about it," Alon replied guiltily, he knew that he had touched a landmine so he needed to defuse it or else he'll ruin his relationship.

"Thank you and I'm sorry for what I said a while ago."

"No, I needed a wake-up call anyway." Alon shook his head with a smile. "If you hadn't told me anything I'd probably done something worse."

Alon continued to explain to him the sudden mantra he had developed since the Siege of Venus his 'I have to keep fighting, for the safety of my family.' mindset which led him into his reckless and dangerous choices such as the limiter removal and gunning down the trio in the ship just now.

"I can't blame you, the last few days had been stressful for all of us," Tsuna said looking at his drink and then placing it on the table. "Extreme conditions tend to bring out the worse of us. If it got you to commit those things then it can break even the noblest of minds."

I guess something extreme happened to him in the past too. Alon thought as he emptied his drink. "Can you promise me something?"

"What is it?" Tsuna raised a curios brow and smiled.

"If I ever begin to slip away like that again, don't hesitate to kill me."

The next day all of them prepared and thanks to Dain's clever choice of words, managed to convince Gabrielle into joining them on their mission. Thus she is given a temporary call-sign of Huntress on account of her choice of weapon, an Ion Bow which stuns all of her enemies be they Ancient or Human.

"One to ten how's your aim?" Dain asked reloading his handguns, his first weapon was lost during the rush to them. And so he had to rely on a pair of modified handguns that he had kept on him.

"Seven, eight if they're human." Gabrielle gave Dain a confident smile as she put on a different suit. This time it was a dark yellow and gunmetal combat suit with a modified helmet.

"Nice suit." Alon complimented.

"Yeah, this can handle a shot." Gabrielle smiled as she put on her helmet, and so the four of them stepped out into the wilderness.

"I gotta say, our mission seems to be going well so far," Tsuna said as they entered the irradiated wasteland as they were now miles away from Ryza's hideout.

"Why would you say that?" Dain and Alon told him in unison causing Tsuna and Gabrielle to share a laugh but as they did so they heard a squadron of Mechs fly by causing the trio to hit the dirt to avoid detection.

"You had to say it," Gabrielle whispered.

"If you wanna back out now is the time." Alon joked as he tried to look at them as he pulled out his binoculars to get a closer look.

"Looks like a squadron of an upgraded form of Knights, and they have Principality Colors." Alon continued, that the Knights were high mobility but lacked any form of defence. But these upgraded Knights had more armour and are cloaked in some form of energy coating.

"The Scutum are here," Tsuna concluded as they got up and hurried their way to the Heliopolis.

The One Thousand Fifty First Mechanized Army or better known as the Scutum is the Principality's equivalent of the Orthus Legion. They represent the best within the Principality and they are often used within the propaganda, known for their gunmetal and gold shield containing the Terran Numerals for the one thousand fifty-first.

Alon has yet to face them but he hoped it would never happen.

"This is Fenrir, we seek an audience," Dain said through the open communications as he finally managed to get close to a secret entrance near the Heliopolis walls.

Meanwhile, Alon looked up to find a carrier of Principality Ships entering the atmosphere. In contrast to the bulky and industrialized look that the Sovereign uses the Principality Ships were sleek and futuristic to hammer home the idea that their technology is on the same level as the golden age of the Terra Federation, as though they are superior compared to the other nations.

And for Alon, the sight was almost intimidating because it made him fear that the ones he had faced, Istar-Svortza, and the Orthus, all of them are nothing compared to what the Principality had to offer.

Can we even stop them? Alon thought as he sprinted after the others who had entered an old service tunnel, as he entered Dain was still trying to contact Elesfor.

"Any luck?" Gabrielle asked as she activated the lights but as Dain fixed the communicator crackled to life with a concern. "Hello!"

"Hello this is Fenrir of Memento Mori." Dain said with relief.

"Oh good, you're alive," Elesfor answered through the communications. "Forget sabotaging, I need you to assassinate Warden Zhenya Antanov, he's the leader of the Scutum that's en route to meet with the Oligarchs to present his plan of using their Solar Furnaces and weaponizing the entire Scutum with it."

"A Warden is here?!" Gabrielle whispered in shock, Warden are high ranking officers within the Principality second only to the High Warden. "I heard there are rumours that a Warden is leading the Scutum so I guess it must be him," Alon told her.

"That's a tall order, are you sure about this?" Dain said even he was reluctant into it. Antanov is a too high profile of a target that would cause a massive ripple effect in the wider galaxy.

"Vasi Sakti, an Orbital Weapon that harnesses the power of the sun and releases a large blast of Solar Energy. He intends to use the Vasi Sakti against the principality regardless if they are civilian or not." He answered, that there was a mixture of fear and desperation. "If he gets them to develop this weapon then the level of Casualty could rival that of the fall of the Federation."

The four of them remained silent for a moment, as though they were processing the information. A devastating orbital weapon that could not only tip the scales of war but also bring a large number of weapons that can cause civilian casualties?

"We'll do it," Dain said without hesitation, both Alon and Tsuna exchanged knowing looks while Gabrielle had a worried look. "But first we'll need information, so tell me everything you know."

According to Elesfor, Zhenya will be meeting with the Oligarchs on the Planet on the Silva Airfield. A high class, by Ercurian standards, airport complex reserved only for the wealthy where Zhenya will show them the Hussars, the upgraded version of the Principality Knights but the only difference is that they are now equipped with Solar Powered weapons instead of the standard ones that Alon and the others are familiar.

As for the plan.

Alon and Tsuna are to sneak into the hangar where they are most likely hiding their Hussars and hijack all the while Dain and Gabrielle would try to sneak into a nearby room and try to assassinate him through a sniper.

And so here they are making their way to the Airfield with a stolen car all the while wearing stolen uniforms utilized by the Mercenary Corps of the Union.

"If he wanted him assassinated in the first place then we should have entered into the atmosphere with our Mechs and taken out their Hussars while they are being presented," Tsuna commented as they loaded their gear.

"Something tells me that things spiral out of Elesfor's plans." Alon nodded as they drove into the parking lot. "I don't trust the man."

"Me neither which is why I sent a message to Ophelia and Aqua to head back and prepare your ReZio and the Lamia on the way down," Tsuna said showing his tablet which showed the message he had sent to Henri and Marina. "If things get too hot I need your ReZio to wreck the Hussars while I upload a virus that corrupts any files associated with it."

"You're a hacker?" Alon asked raising an eyebrow at him. "Wait does Fenrir know about this?"

"Nope but since the main plan is to plant a bullet on Zhenya Antanov in front of a lot of people, most likely civilians, things could get chaotic so think of it as a contingency plan," Tsuna whispered as they silently made their way into the hangar and they stopped by a pair of guards.

"What's your business here?" One of them said aiming their guns at them.

"We're sent here to run maintenance," Tsuna said showing a fake ID he had managed to forge under short notice.

As it turns out since the entire planet is run by mega-corporations, then their military force is non-existent and they'd have to constantly rely on mercenaries. And the thing about mercenaries is that they don't care about context as long as they are getting paid.

"Fair enough, make it quick cause those Soldiers from the Principality are coming." He said without bothering to look at the I.D. that Tsuna prepared.

Mercenaries, probably agreed that they're underpaid for this job. Alon thought as they hurried to the main hangar where Alon got a look at the Hussar.

Firstly to know about the Hussars is to know about the Knights, the KNT-62 Knights were the Principality's answer to the Sovereign's KTP-22 Kataphracts. However, it became clear that after various battles against their Kataphracts that the Knights require improvement.

And that is where the HSS-24 Hussars are developed and to describe the Hussar with one word, would be simple. It had lacked the basic Gunmetal black colours of the Knights and instead had dull grey as though it was still a testing prototype.

Whether or not the Hussars have the Solar Furnaces integrated into the Mech is unknown but it was clear that the Hussars aim to be a next generation Mech used by the Principality.

As Alon looked at the Hussars an idea came into mind.

"Hey Suzaku, why not take one while I plant the bombs and the virus," Alon told him with a smile while pointing at the Hussars. "After all, I already have a Zio why not take a Hussar for Memento Mori."

Tsuna looked at the Hussar and then back at Alon as a smile slowly grew on his face. After all, Tsuna had been in Memento Mori longer than Alon was, and so it would be fair if he got his Unit.

"Deal." He grinned as he handed Alon the Code Cylinder containing the virus while he took the bombs off him. "I'll plant the bombs while you upload the Virus."

Alon sprinted off and headed to the main computer that serves as the main server for all of the Computers used in the hangar and after a split second plugged the Code Cylinder with a satisfying click! As the Virus automatically uploaded itself as it was programmed to delete anything made by the Principality.

"That should do it," Alon said as he took the cylinder once more and sprinted back to the hangar where Tsuna had just finished planting bombs on the Mechs while preparing for the exit.

"You ready?" Alon asked him who hopped into the cockpit of the Hussar who was busy programming it.

"Almost done I found something amazing about the Hussars," He said folding the panel and showing a program called 'Albedo Reflectors'. "I understand now why they need the Solar Furnaces."

"Save the explanation for—"

Alarms blared out in the hangar as a bright red light flashed through it.

"Fenrir what's going on?" Alon asked as he hopped into the Hussar Tsuna was on.

"The plan failed, Huntress and I missed and now the entire base is on High alert," Dain said panting while gunfire can be heard in the background. "We're heading on your hangar and—"

"Hey what are you—!" A Mercenary walked toward them and Alon pulled out a gun and immediately open fire on the Mercenary killing him on the spot.

"Yeah hold that Tsuna has a plan," Alon said as he hopped inside the mech.
