《Hello, Inside Monster》CHAPTER XX: A BAD JOKE

Arriving in the parking lot, SolHi saw DooSan squatting next to a red car and looking for something next to its wheels.

She stopped in place and stares toward the car, but nothing happens for about 2 minutes, but when DooSan notices her, he whistles to her, but SolHi didn’t understand that he was calling her to approach him, till he didn’t make desperate signs toward her.

Unhappy with his behavior, SolHi frowned, but she decided to approach, somehow curious to know what new Han DooSan was planning.

Being only a step behind him, SolHi slowly coughed, preparing her voice and trying to attract DooSan’s attention this way.

“Why are you staying like a mummy? Do something!” DooSan growled at her when he finally noticed her glance piercing his back.

“Like what? Like whistling like hooligans? You don’t know how normal people talk. Definitely!”

DooSan frowned and stared at her, while his glance was sending the message: “Are you now looking for a fight?”

“Yeah. Absolutely!” answered SolHi, taking him by surprise, as if she had read his thoughts. “What to do?”

“Watch my back!”

“What?”

“Ian SolHi!” grinned DooSan through the teeth. “You the lookout! And … give me that!”

“To give you what?” and SolHi stared at him with big eyes.

Nodding in reproach, DooSan approached her and, searching through her pockets, he had found a clasp knife and he approached the wheels again. “If someone sees me you are dead!”

Unsatisfied, SolHi just grinned at him and she looked around, but the parking lot was empty. When she looked again at DooSan she saw how he was at first pretending that he ties the laces of his shoes, but in fact, he was deflating the front wheels, and soon after the blade of the clap-knife took a deep bite from the rear tires, a gesture that made SolHi slap her forehead and mumble: “And he said I’m the odd one.”

A clap on her shoulder made her wince, but behind her was only DooSan, grinning satisfied: “we are done here. Let’s go now! We have a business to do!” and, smiling, he got in the car.

Still staring around, confused with all she saw, SolHi also got in the car, but she continued to stare at the poor red car which was sitting now inclined.

“Happy now?” SolHi asked DooSan when she noticed him grinning satisfied while driving the car. “You know … of those who are smiling by themselves isn’t a good word to say.”

“You'd better say thank you to me and not try to argue with me.”

“To say thank you? For what? For destroying someone’s car?”

“It wasn’t just someone’s car. It was San DuSik’s car.”

SolHi stared at him with her eyes exiting the orbits, while she was biting her lips, but her expression wasn’t definitely of surprise of finding out whose car DooSan’s destroyed.

DooSan caught her gesture and it seemed strange to him. “Wait a minute! You know whose car was.”

“Me? No. Why do you think so?” but she was trying to avoid DooSan’s glance as if trying to hide something, and this seemed so strange to him.

“Your behavior tells me everything, Ian SolHi. So, talk! What did you do to San DuSik’s car and why exactly do you have such things with you?” and he threw the clap-knife on SolHi’s lap.

“Just for fun?” SolHi grinned.

“Nea. This answer doesn’t satisfy me. Talk! And don’t make me get angry, because you know what I’m capable of.”

“Yeah, I know and San DuSik’s car too. Poor wheels!”

“SolHi, what about the knife? What did you do with him?”

“Nothing strange. Just, let’s say I need it to arrange some wires.”

“Wires?” and suddenly DooSan stepped on the brake pedal, staring at SolHi as if he saw a ghost. “Yah, have you lost your mind? How the hell to kill someone by cutting the wires of his car only because he slapped you?”

SolHi devilishly grinned. “First he has to start the engine of that car to kill himself because of me. I doubt he will manage to do it. So, no dead guy in my consciousness.”

“Wha, and I thought I’m the devil. You … you definitely scare me” and he starts to scratch his ear. “And I think someone already noticed our bad joke. I can hear his growl from here.”

“He will need more than a growl when he’ll notice everything that we did to his car” and both started to laugh loudly.

HIGH SCHOOL. YARD

The body of a teenage girl is lying on the ground. Around her are already the police and CNS.

GhiYon is concentrating on analyzing the body when he feels someone else’s hand touching his back. He grabs the bistoury and threatens DooSan, who was grinning at him: “you ... never ever approach me from behind or I can confuse you with a ghost and ... keep her away from my body” and his eyes pierced SolHi's glance.

SolHi, who was two steps away from them, blinks quickly from her eyelashes, but to the surprise of the two men, who thought that she will start an argument with them, she just grinned at them and after shrugging and nodding in reproach she went to search the surroundings.

GhiYon looked amazed at DooSan. “Did you train her? She’s too quiet.”

“To train her? You don’t know what you say, man. I’ll bet that I'll be the trained one soon.”

“That’s news.”

“What exactly?”

“You said that she’s a modern witch, but from what I see you will fall so soon and not precisely at her legs.”

“Yeah, shut your mouth!”

“Why exactly? It’s funnier this way. I can imagine what she will do to you and yeah, I have such a vivid imagination.”

DooSan grinned in mockery, taking GhiYon by surprise. “I can see. What about your new friend? Don’t tell me you killed her because of your vivid imagination?!”

“Ha-ha. She wasn’t killed. It’s a suicide, man. She jumped off the roof.”

“Drugs?”

“No sign of it, but I can tell you more after doing some tests, but I doubt it will reveal something new. But there is something interesting about her: some small cuts on her inner thigh and forearms.”

“Did she cut herself?”

“I can’t tell you, but …”

“She did it. For sure,” SolHi told them and she showed them similar old cuts on her forearm. “I hope that I’m not forced to show the other ones too.”

She turned her back to them and she continued to search the surrounding, while the two men were staring at each other like two perfect dumbs, because none of them had ever expected to find out that SolHi tortured herself in the past.

SIX YEARS AGO. A FEW DAYS BEFORE THE TRIAL. CELL.

SolHi is alone in the cell. Her roommate had been released yesterday and she has to face loneliness till the trial.

There are still about 5 days till that moment, but SolHi is so afraid because after the last visit of Yun Marie she couldn’t sleep anymore because Marie told her that if SolHi manages to be released, she will be soon killed by someone in the street or while she’s asleep or while she just eats alone in some restaurant and this was something SolHi had never expected to face one day.

This thought made SolHi swallow her own breath because she sees all around her only assassins that are after her, but she can’t yell. She doesn’t want to be dragged into the room of punishments, again. She had been there. So many times, and not precisely because she did something bad, but simply because someone gave orders to the guardians to make her life in the prison unbearable.

“Just leave me alone! Please!” SolHi slowly wept, covering her eyes with her palms, but the muggy inside her felt more and more vivid and she couldn’t breathe.

When she took her palms off her eyes, SolHi looked around. It was already dusk and this means that soon it will be even worse than before because during the night she hears sounds, she remembers fragments from that dark night when she lost her baby and when someone died and also, she is afraid not to lose her life till that famous trial.

A guardian approaches her cell and, squatting next to the rails, she pushes a clasp knife toward SolHi, who stares frightened at the guardian.

The guardian is a woman about 45, who saw a lot in this life and who also spent a long time in this prison, guarding a lot of real criminals she is also used to doing favors, but it won’t be a favor for SolHi, but for those who want her dead.

“Just cut your veins and do us a favor, bitch. You don’t deserve to live in this world” and she left, leaving SolHi shuddering like a leaf in the wind because the blade of the knife blinked into the weak light of the light bubble as if death itself was calling SolHi to enter her world.

But SolHi didn’t dare to approach it. She stared at it for a long time, till the light was turned off, but even so, she continued sitting on the floor, with her back supported on the rails.

Then, she heard steps approaching her. At first, SolHi didn’t understand what was going on, but she didn’t even manage to react when someone grabbed her from behind, pressing her throat with her arm and forcing SolHi to stay still.

“Who are you?” asked SolHi, still shuddering.

But she heard only a slow laugh, barely heard, and a deep wound was made on her forearm … then another one and another one, but even if it hurt like hell, SolHi knew that if she yells then she will be soon dead. So, she decided to keep silent. No matter what will happen.

Her executioner left after making 5 deep knife wounds on SolHi's forearm, but not until whispering into SolHi’s ear: “This is only the beginning.”

And SolHi saw the face of her executioner 3 more times before the trial, because she had been again attacked in the shower, then in the yard, while they were breathing fresh air or doing some work, and every time SolHi received new cuts on her thighs and forearms, but she never showed those scars to anybody before. But she decided to show them to DooSan the day they found the teenager dead in the backyard of her high school and it means that SolHi must remember a hard time of her past.

PRESENT. HIGH SCHOOL’S BUILDING ROOF

“Something happens to you?” DooSan asked SolHi, after watching at her for a while, but not being noticed by SolHi, who seemed to be so immersed into her world and his question made her jerk and to watch him, while she was slowly shuddering as if DooSan was the one who made those wounds on her body, while she was in the jail.

Finally, SolHi managed to control her emotions and to watch somewhere else. “Nothing important. Just thoughts spinning in my head,” and she approached the edge of the roof, looking down and trying this away from the change the subject of their conversation, but this didn’t cheat on DooSan, who felt that her answer is just a random one and if he continues to dig inside her, he can find out a really terrible story because it can’t be something light, while SolHi still shudders only by remembering it.

A few moments later, DooSan grabbed SolHi’s arm, forcing her to look into his glance. “Tell me about the scars.”

“I can’t tell you more than your forensic friend told you already. Not until we’ll investigate it thoroughly” and she tried to pass him, but DooSan didn’t release her arm. “What do you want to know, prosecutor?”

“About your scars. Why did you hurt yourself? You always said that you aren’t guilty of what happened to my brother, but still, you did this to you and those scars are a mark that only those who feel remorse can do to them.”

“And who told you that I made them?”

“What? What do you mean?”

SolHi pushed his arm away releasing hers and, taking a step in front, she stared into his eyes, making DooSan feel somehow unarmed and awkward. “This is a testimony of your mother’s love toward me. Or maybe it was your order?”

“What are you talking about, SolHi? How are your scars related to my mother or to me?”

SolHi didn’t understand why he looked confused and somehow surprised. She was convinced that he knew about what happened to her, but now she’s not that convinced anymore. “Did you really didn’t know about it?”

“About what, SolHi? Just talk and not try to make me feel guilty. It does not work for me.”

“This is not my intention.”

“Then what?’

“I don’t know. It’s just a feeling I always had … that you knew everything that your mother did to me. I mean, about what happened to me in the jail, because those scars, you are so interested to find out about them, were made at her command.”

“You are lying. My mother isn’t capable of this.”

“Are you so sure about this, Han DooSan? Do you really know your mother?”

“Yes, and I’m sure that you are lying.”

“Then, I don’t see the point in continuing to tell you about this. For you, everything I’ll say will be a lie, while for me it’s the truth.”

She wanted to move away, but DooSan grabbed her by both her arms and turned her toward him by force and SolHi was so amazed to see the fire of hatred into his eyes again, a fire

that she had always been afraid of, but now, when she has that glance in front of her sight, she doesn’t know what to do.

“I don’t know what your game is and why you showed me those scars, but you’ll never get what you want. I’ll never give up on my revenge.”

“DooSan, who told you that I want this?”

Her question confused him more. “What?”

“I always waited for you to finish with your revenge, but it is so late to come that I’m already afraid of it. Afraid that this nightmare, this hell in which I’m now living will never end.”

He saw tears in her eyes and this forced him to release her and to step back. “This can’t be true. This can’t be.”

“But it is. You two … you and your mother dragged me more in this Hell while looking for revenge, but what you never suspected was that I already lived in your hatred and your brother was revenged. And … to continue my story … even if you don't believe me - I was attacked in the jail, several times, by someone’s command, who wanted me not to leave that jail ever or at least not to leave it alive and the wounds which they did to me then ... it left on my skin the scars you saw, but I’m sorry to tell you that this never stopped me.”

SolHi left the roof, paying no attention to DooSan who at first squatted next to the wall, and later he sat down on the floor because he felt that he was unable anymore to support the weight of his own remorse and thoughts.

“It can’t be true. My mother isn’t capable of this. She’s lying. SolHi is lying,” and he supported his head on the palms of his head as if he was trying to drive away from the crowded thoughts that were attacking his mind and were forcing him to feel so weak.

A sudden memory made him raise his gaze and look in the distance, while Marie’s voice was echoing in his head: “Just do what I told you. I don’t care if she dies in that jail. At least this way I’ll feel released and that my son will get his revenge.”

He heard it a few days before SolHi’s last trial. He was coming back home after a long day of looking for evidence and when he entered the house, Marie didn’t notice him, being with her back at him, but DooSan then didn’t pay attention to her words, because they were thinking the same then.

But now, when he understood what they did in the past and that they got that revenge they always looked for, it didn’t bring any pleasure to him, but per contra, it made DooSan feel even more desolate than before.
