《Hello, Inside Monster》CHAPTER XIX: THE KISS OF DEATH

A hard slap threw SolHi on the floor. Barely breathing, because of anger and of pain, and still touching the burning cheek, she looks at San DuSik who was the one who slapped her.
The 45-years-old prosecutor is full of hatred toward SolHi while staring at her unsatisfied and whistles through his teeth: “you … garbage! How dared a criminal to act like this with a decent man?”
“Watch your tongue, prosecutor San,” yelled Kan at DuSik, still grabbed from behind by Yoon Suk, who was trying not to let him approach the prosecutor because he knew what Kan was capable of.
“You, shut your mouth,” DuSik demanded to Kan and took a few steps toward SolHi, who was already standing and, shaking because of hatred, she clenched her fists.
She wanted to teach this idiot good manners, but she couldn’t allow be kicked out of the police, so she decided to swallow her pride and to keep silent.
DuSik took it instead as an acceptance of her guilt and grabbing her from the clothes with one hand, he slapped her again.
When he was about to slap her the third time, SolHi grabbed his wrist and, staring furiously into his eyes, whispered: “Just don’t touch me, prosecutor, or I'm not responsible for myself”.
“Is this a threat?”
“Take it as you wish, but don’t dare to slap me again. Did you get the message?”
Grinning unpleasantly, DuSik released her clothes and retracting his hand, he took a few steps behind and furiously kicked the chair, turning it upside down.
The falling chair made a deafening noise around, but SolHi continued in place.
“It seems to me that I stepped on the tail of a snake,” mumbled SolHi, and the hint she sent had been understood by DuSik, but he couldn’t approach her once again, because Kan snatched out from Yoon Suk’s hand and, stepping in front of SolHi, was about to punch DuSik, but she touched his hand, stopping him. “It doesn’t worth it, sombe. Leave him alone,” and she left the room.
DuSik, amazed with her reaction, pushed Kan from in front of him and also exited the room, intending to find her and to teach her a lesson, but when he was in the hall he couldn’t understand where SolHi had left. So, he just roared like a mad person and moved along the corridor, under the furious glance of Kan, who was standing in front of the door and watching the prosecutor leaving.

1 HOUR BEFORE THE INCIDENT. INTERROGATION ROOM.
SolHi is alone with Mire, who continues to watch the detective with superiority, convinced that the policemen got nothing against her and that soon she will be set free.
Suddenly, SolHi threw in front of Mire a pack of photos, which spread on the table, revealing Si Yoon’s dead body and the image of the dead woman made Mire shudder.
“Who’s she and why do you show me this?”
“You should know better than me who she is, Park Mire, while you and your lover killed her in cold blood.”
SolHi wanted to seem calm, but inside her, everything was boiling with anger, because she still can’t forget or forgive the fact that Yun Si Yoon died because she and DooSan had been so unattentively.
“What? Did you lose your courage now?” SolHi tried to provoke the woman who was staring at the photos and soon a kind of grinning showed up on her face. “Wow, you are something, girl. From what I see you still think that Min SinJu will save your ass. But do you know why I’m here? To tell you the truth about what you are for him: a nobody.”

“Nobody? This is what you think I am for my Oppa? He loves me and he will take me out of here.”
“He already betrayed you, Park Mire and he told us the reason why you killed Li Ha Ni.”
“You are lying.”
“Do you think so? I’m sure that not because I have his testimony” and, turning the computer screen toward Mire, she turned on a video with Min SinJu’s interrogatory: “she just asked me to come there, telling me that she has something important to tell me.”
“And you just trusted her?” asked him Kan, who was interrogating Min SinJu with Yoon Suk.”
“Well, I hadn’t a reason not to trust her. In the end, is the woman with whom I spend my nights, but when I got there, I saw Ha Ni on the floor … I tried to call the police, but Mire told me that if I tell someone about what happened she will kill me and then she will kill herself too, and…”
“That is not true,” whispered Mire. “I never told him this. Why is he lying?”
“Because he is trying to save his ass and not yours, but don’t worry. Even if his lawyer settled him free this time, with the help of the Prosecution, I’ll find the evidence to send him to jail too.”
SolHi stands up to leave, but Mire suddenly attacks her and SolHi saw herself forced to defend herself and, grabbing Mire’s arm she threw her over the shoulder and later she immobilized her on the floor, watching her with anger: “nobody told you to mess with a man like Min SinJu who doesn’t pay two pennies for you and who could kill a poor woman like Yun Si Yoon, only to save his ass. I’ll crush you at the trial and we’ll ask for the maximum penalty, Mire, because you don’t deserve to be treated like a person.”
Releasing Mire, SolHi intended to leave the room, but she stopped when she heard Mire talking to her.
“You had been once in my place, detective. We aren’t that different.”
SolHi took a deep breath and, sketching a smile, she turned toward Mire.
“No. We are different. And, do you know why?” and she took a few steps toward Mire, who, feeling that SolHi could again attack her, crawled back till she touched the wall with her back. “It’s because I never dared to look into the detective’s eyes and to lie to him.”
“Nay. We are the same, because if to think carefully, you also sent somebody to the other world.”
“Do you have any evidence about this?”
“I don’t need evidence. Everybody knows who you banged. And damn he was an important person.”
Right in front of Mire, SolHi stares at her and suddenly she punched the wall, not that hard, while her fist passed a few centimeters from Mire’s face. “Don’t be an idiot, Park Mire. We are not the same, for the simple reason that I am free of charges, while you will never see the world again. Only the one of a maximum penalty jail.”
SolHi turned her back to Mire to leave and she suddenly heard a deafening scream behind her. When she turned toward the woman she barely managed to move aside, because the prisoner took a chair and wanted to hit her, but instead Mire hit the void of the air, continuing to yell.
“I’ll show you all that it means to mess with such a nice person like me. And do you know why? Because you all are fools. Yes, I was the one who first hit Li Ha Ni” and a grin of pleasure was seen on her face. “And I never regretted it, because that bitch always threatened to take my man from me. She was just a prostitute with whom he spent some nights, but she thought that she deserves more than this. I just showed her what her place is in this world. Nothing more. Why should I pay for this?”

“Because she’s dead, ok?” SolHi yelled at her. “If a person dies because of you, at least you should show some remorse.”
“For what? Because I defended my pride and my honor? I can kill even more if it means not to be trampled underfoot.”
Mire is shaking with all her body, while she and SolHi stare one at the other. SolHi is astonished to see how shameless can be this woman, who dared to compare SolHi with her, when she just killed for pleasure, while when SolHi maybe killed someone, but it was to defend her life, but what came later was simply unbelievable: “She came into my house demanding me to get lost. Me! From my house! And then she attacked me. She was the first to attack me and to provoke me, but when I hit something while falling after her push, I understood that the only way to get rid of her was to erase her from the Earth's surface. And I did it: I just took the golf stick and I hit her. Only once and she fell. I couldn’t believe that It was that easy to kill someone and to breathe a sigh of relief.”
“And was it worth it? To kill her? And that wasn’t just a hit, Mire. Don’t lie to me. There were at least two hits. One on her neck and one on her head. You…”
“I hit only once, but there was someone else who also wanted her death. And he took that stick from my hand and he just had some fun, after wrapping that stinking body and hitting it till he had no more power.”
“What?”
“She was still breathing when she had been wrapped into that carpet. She was still breathing” and, laughing like a mad person, Mire sat down on the floor, staring all over the room with a lost glance. In the interrogatory, the room entered in a hurry Yoon Suk and inspector Yu, who heard the yells and came to help SolHi, but there wasn’t necessary any more help, because Mire wasn’t a danger for SolHi anymore.
There was somebody else who watched this scene from the Observation Room - Han DooSan, who grinned with satisfaction, hearing Mire’s confession. “Finally, Min SinJu! I got you and I can’t believe that the one who served you on a golden plate had been the one I hate the most. But never mind, if I can get rid of both of you from one blow then lucky me!” and with his hands in his pockets and smiling, DooSan left the room.

ROOF. PRESENT.
SolHi is sitting on the edge of the roof, watching in the distance, but she isn’t sad, because she somehow feels that this way, receiving a slap on her face, she paid for Yun Si Yoon’s death.”
“Trying to understand the whole world?” she heard DooSan’s voice talking to her and she turned her head toward him, but instead of a glacial glance how she was used to seeing in his eyes, SolHi saw a bandaged wound on his left fist.
“And from what I see a poor wall suffered again because of your anger” she tried to provoke him and again looked in the distance.
DooSan decided to keep silent for a while and, approaching SolHi, he sat down next to her, taking her by surprise, because SolHi found out not long ago that Han DooSan is afraid of heights.
“This is the edge of a roof, prosecutor Han.”
“So? Do you intend to throw me over it or something?” he joked and, looking down, he shuddered a little bit, but he managed not to let SolHi see that he was afraid. “If not, it means I can sit here.”
“Why are you here?”
“I was just trying to be sure that nobody ends his life after what happened today.”
“To end my life? When?”
“Just what. Or what, the fact that you are sitting on the edge of the roof is a kind of hobby for you?”
“A hobby not, but it calms me down.”
“It calms you down! Being at a step from death, while sitting on the roof? Expensive pleasure for me.”
“Keep your bad jokes for you, prosecutor Han. Even if in the eyes of many people I have enough reasons to kill myself, I won’t do this. Why? Just because I love life and I’m not that stupid to end it. Not until I’ll clear my name.”
“And … what if you won’t clean it? What if you finally remember the fact that you killed someone?”
“Then I’ll jump off this roof because I will finally understand the reason why that happened to me 7 years ago. So, don’t worry: you will get your revenge for your brother.”
SolHi stood up, intending to go, but the fact that DooSan grabbed her wrist, made her stop and watch him. DooSan also stood up and, taking a step toward her, made her freeze, because his movement was similar to an intention to kiss her. So, she bent on her back, trying to avoid it if it happened, but DooSan approached her ear, and touching the skin of her cheek, he whispered: “you won’t have that pleasure, Ian SolHi! If I find out that you are the one who killed my brother, I’ll be the one pushing you off this roof and I'll end with your miserable life. Only this way I’ll fulfill my revenge.”
But his feelings were betraying him, even if his words were saying something different: his heart was beating fast, while he was remembering last night kiss, and suddenly, he kissed her again, but this kiss didn’t last long and when he finally took his lips off hers, he whispered again: “take it as a kiss of death. I’ll give you one more before killing you,” and he went away, leaving behind an astonished SolHi, who was confused not to hear him threatening her to kill her like he usually does, but because he kissed her, and this is something SolHi never expected to feel again.
***
Descending the stairs, DooSan is thoughtful. He never intended to climb on that roof and to kiss SolHi again, but he did it, moved from inside by something he still can’t understand.
“What the f… is in my head lately? First, came the kiss yesterday, then I saved her, and today I punched that motherfucker, in revenge for slapping SolHi. I’m definitely losing my mind.”
Shocking his head in reproach for his actions, DooSan descends the stairs, one by one, as if counting them, while remembering that entering the office he listened to the talk between Kan and the others about what happened between San DuSik and SolHi. Actually, it was impossible not to find out, because Kan, moved by an attack of anger, yelled like a desperate about the dare a prosecutor had to slap a detective and to call her a murderer.
And then inside DooSan, the madness woke up. He doesn’t understand why, but he felt it. So vividly and so muggy, that DooSan still can’t breathe till now.
He entered DuSik’s office, 5 minutes later after leaving him and grabbing this one from the clothes, he pushed him against the wall, and while pressing his enemy’s throat with the forearm, he yelled to DuSik that he will be a dead man if he dares to touch one of his men once again.
“I never believed that it’s true what others gossip,” DuSik told DooSan, with a perfect grin of pleasure on his face.
“Gossip? About what?”
“About the fact that you are playing with your brother's assassin some bed games” and winking, DuSik touched DooSan’s tie, pretending to arrange it. “You should say thank you and not yell at me for slapping your mistress. In the end, I’m doing you a favor” but a sudden punch put him to the ground after he hardly hit the wall with his head.
“This is my way to say thank you to someone who dares to threaten my men, idiot. What I’m doing with Ian SolHi is just my business. Don’t try to take some benefits from it, because I’m not such a kind person, as my brother was, to swallow all the shits you do to me without a nice answer. So, stay away from me and my employees or I swear that the next death I’ll investigate will be yours.”
DooSan hit the wall, leaving a blood mark on it, and left the office. Touching the bloody wound on the corner of his lips, DuSik mumbles something unpleasantly and gives a call, informing Min SinJu that DooSan is after him with Mire’s confession.
