《Love Death Cemetery》Chap 11: It’s not that bad here

The first thing Lug did when he got home was to make himself something to eat.

Since he had started working in this cemetery, he was eating for three people.

He was constantly hungry, starving even.

This was starting to worry him financially.

He wondered if his salary would even be enough to feed himself.

"I will have to find a solution, besides I don't have much food left and I didn't bring anything from the city. I think the merchant truck comes on Thursday... Or Friday... I don't know..."

Gavan, who was listening to Lug mumble, decided to help him.

"The truck that honks its horn loudly? It comes every Thursday, so tomorrow at the end of the afternoon."

"Oh, thanks! I need to make a list, it's so convenient that the store comes to me directly!"

All of a sudden, Lug began to hold his stomach.

A sharp pain twisted his guts.

"You don’t look so good..." said Gavan who was looking at him curiously.

"Yes, I have a stomach ache and I really need to..."

Lug hurried to the bathroom.

He stayed there for a good ten minutes.

When he came out, he just said a few words.

"Ooooh... I'm going to bed..."

He went to bed right after his meal, it took him a while to sleep, he was still hungry and he was imagining all sorts of good things to eat.

But he found the crack in the wall that is insomnia and managed to fall asleep.

The next day, he slept until late and was awakened only by the horn of the merchant truck.

"Gee whiz, I have to hurry!"

Lug hurriedly got dressed and went outside.

The truck was about to leave, but stopped when the driver saw Lug through the rearview mirror.

"Thanks and sorry I forgot to set my alarm!" Said Lug breathlessly.

The merchant looked at him curiously.

"Are you the new caretaker? You're young, which is unusual for a job like this."

"I guess so."

Lug answered without thinking too much, he was in a hurry to buy things to eat.

The truck was rather small, but inside there was everything you can dream of when you are a big eater.

Breads of all kinds, sweets, meat, fish, there was ham hanging out to dry.

Lug took his time.

The merchant, like any good merchant, had patience only for the spent customers and Lug was definitely one.

In the end, Lug spent a lot of money.

He had bought a month's worth of food, but he knew he would eat it all in a week.

"Thank you very much, see you next week!" said Lug with his arms full.

"Without fail!" replied the driver delighted with this new customer.

He headed home, his arms full.

Eno saw Lug from afar and came to meet him.

"Hi, Lug. You're up late today!"

"Yeah... I was sick yesterday, I went to bed early too, I must have slept 20 hours or something, that’s crazy!"

"You sleep a lot... And considering what you just bought, you have a huge appetite! Where do you put all this energy, you are always very calm."

Lug stopped for a moment.

He had just seen Malda coming towards him.

He quickly found an excuse to avoid her, he didn't want to be seen all disheveled, just out of bed and full of groceries on his arms.

"Eno! Come with me I'll show you the coleslaw I bought for you!"

He hurried to his house, let Eno in and closed the door.

He felt a little guilty but he only wanted to look his best for her.

"Oh, yes. Eno, do you know Gavan?"

"Of course, we're very good friends!"

Gavan was sipping his tea, you could feel tension in the air, but he didn't say anything.

"This is the first time you've been here, I've never given you a tour of my place!" Said Lug in a light tone.

"Yes, I had lost hope that you would ever show me your cozy nest, you didn't put up any decorations, there are no pictures, you don't have a family?" asked Eno naively.

"I'm not in touch with my family anymore," said Lug soberly.

Eno felt that this subject had made the atmosphere heavier.

He decided to change the subject.

"Gavaaaan, my old friend. You still like tea, I see! That reminds me... You made Lug think you could make things rise, I didn't know you were a joker!"

Gavan seemed to be holding back his anger.

"I'd like some quiet in here." He said, clutching his teacup.

"Ok… It was nice to come to your place, Lug. The grumpy grandpa spoils the decor a bit, otherwise it's great!" quipped Eno.

Gavan stood up abruptly, looking furious.

Lug quickly pushed Eno out the door before the situation got out of hand.

Once outside, Lug looked around the house to see if Malda was still there.

The way was clear, he decided to sit on the landing with Eno.

"Hey, Eno. When I was in town I saw tons of ghosts, much more than here at the cemetery!"

"Ahah, yes! Ghost hunters should go to the big cities instead of old abandoned houses if they want to see ghosts!"

"But how come? I thought they stayed close to their bodies?"

"No, not all of them. Ghosts either stay near their bodies or where they died, which is often the case for ghosts that died violently. And then there are those that stay in a place that they are attached to."

"So a lot of people are attached to the city?"

"I guess so."

"It's really a strange world and it feels like I'm the only living who realizes it, how crazy this world really is..."

There was a silence.

"Finally living in this graveyard isn't so bad, is it?" Asked Eno.

Lug looked up, the sun had just set, the sky was clear and had a pinkish tint, a few stars could be seen.

It had been a hot day, the smell of pine trees filled the cemetery.

"There are beautiful things here, it's true."

Lug and Eno never spoke again about the 3-day promise they had made to each other, that day, Eno had begun to accept that his fate was tied to this cemetery.
