《The Zombie Apocalypse: The Ville》Chapter 8: The Shotty

Twenty-eight minutes passed, Mike and Marv killed one zombie a piece. Deshon reported that a zombie had been tailing us for four minutes. Don thinks he sees a zombie trying to follow us while staying hidden behind the trees and darkness of the night. I hear the occasional loud clang from the cars. We all know what's going on. Justin: We know three are for sure are following us. I guess that they will try to cut us off with another zombie since we have numbers. Eli: There's no point in running away from them; they will just follow us until we kill them. Marv: But using gunfire might just bring a horde on top of us. And plus, we don't know when they're going to attack us. Justin: So, we keep marching forward, to our destination. Audrey: How about we go into a corner so we can get this over with. I'm tired of looking behind my shoulder! Mike: Don't worry, we will get them soon enough; they're smart enough not to attack us head-on.

Eli: I wonder, are they smart enough to attack us when a horde is nearby so they can get back up. Tim: Stop saying that type of shit in the air, bruh! Your fascination with these freaks is disturbing! Don: Deshon, how far is the zombie in the back? Deshon: If I had to take an educated guess, it would be twenty yards; he's staying low to the ground on all fours. Don: Justin, do you think you can take the shot and hit him in the head? Justin: Depends. Is he doing a lot of moving around? Audrey: Nope, he's staying vertical to us. Can you please take care of him before I lose my mind?!
Justin takes his rifle off his back and starts to slow down, so he can be with Deshon and Audrey. He turns his head a little, just barely seeing him at the corner of his eye. He put his gun six feet away from his chest and took a deep breath and turned around quickly, and fired his rifle. The gunshot created a booming echo that filled the domain. Justin quickly dashes to Don and fires into the trees. Without any hesitation. Justin: Everyone, circle up!!! All of us got into a tight circle while Justin was outside the circle looking at his surroundings. Audrey: Did you kill it?! Justin: I don't know if it's playing dead or not! Eli: Remember rule number two, double tap! Justin takes another shot at the zombie on the ground.

Justin: Follow me, and go back to the original formation! Mike, Marv, and Tim are right beside Justin, while Don is on the right while I'm on the left four yards behind them then Audrey and Deshon are five yards back from us, guarding the rear. We eventually reached the zombie on the ground, soon as Justin raised up his rifle, the stalker zombie quickly launched at Michael and successfully tackled him to the ground. Justin lined up for the clean shot, but the zombie got off Mike and went straight for Justin's gun and put his hand on the muzzle while he fired his weapon. The zombie is struggling to pry Justin's rifle out of his hands. Marv and Mike got their bats and swung for the zombie's kneecaps. The stalker zombie was brought to his knees, then I used my bat to swing down on the top of his head; I kept on attacking it until the back of the skull caved in.
Eli: Mike, did he get you?! Mike: Na, my hoodie was protecting me from getting scratched. Justin, why did you hesitate?! Justin: He sprung up so fast, then he went to you; I couldn't pull the trigger. I might've hit someone else. Deshon: Be on guard; multiple zombies are behind us! One hundred yards behind us! Justin: We need some distance and fast! We all started running away from the area. We ran for a couple of minutes, then looked behind us and started back walking. Eli: We got plenty of distance. Justin: Yep, we cut our ETA by ten minutes. Why do I have this feeling that those stalker zombies are still tailing us? I don't even know I even got a kill shot on the second one. I barely saw the damn thing. Deshon, I know you're tired but keep watching what's behind us.
Deshon had his hands on his knees and looked up, and gave Justin the thumbs up. He suddenly collpased and laid flat on his back on the road. Deshon: Give me a minute; I need to catch my breath! He started to breathe heavily on the ground. He took off his glasses to wipe the sweat off his face and put them back on. Audrey facepalmed herself and started to look down upon Deshon literally, with this annoyed look on her. Audrey: Do you see why we didn't want you to come with us because you can't run for a few minutes! Deshon started to cough violently in rapid successions. Deshon: I just need some water, and I'll be okay. Audrey took off her bag and grabbed bottled water, and gave it to him. Deshon, couldn't even sit up to drink the water; so he drank it vertically; he killed the water after a few seconds. Deshon threw the bottle to the side and tried to stand up but fell down. Mike threw up his hands out of frustration because he knew this would happen.

Mike: Bro, you should've stayed! You're holding us back! We could've kept on running for a few more minutes! Now, we either leave you behind and fend for yourself, or one of us has to help you walk. Know your damn place, you belong inside of the school with rest because you can't make the cut!!! Deshon: Shut up! I just need a timeout so I can keep up. Don walked up to Deshon and carried him on his shoulder. Don: I can hold you for a couple of minutes. Don't try to fight it, or I will drop you to the ground without any hesitation. Deshon: Alright. Justin: Let's get moving. It's eight-forty-seven, we will be there in fifty minutes. Eli: We can just walk there. We need to save as much stamina as possible, so we can run from zombies later. Tim: Are you going to be okay, Don? That nigga Deshon weighs like two hundred pounds, and putting all that weight on your shoulder. Don: I'm only doing this for a couple of minutes, so it's nothing.
Why did this man come along?! His stubbornness is only hurting us! He just had to come along when we had to walk a long way. Then we got zombies that are potentially tailing us. I hate this fucking year! And I know she won't be in this area! Tomorrow, I have to go to Atlanta or something, so I can start searching for her. And l probably guess that she's around Lagrange or Atlanta or somewhere around that area. I hope that you're alive somewhere and you're not suffering.
Forty-five minutes had passed. Deshon is back walking on his feet, but he's still huffing and puffing as we went. We just took our five-minute break; we forgot to keep in contact with the rest of the group at school, so we radioed in, but no response. And now we're five-minutes away from the rental car place. As we kept marching forward, we stumbled on a twelve-man zombie group.
Justin: Eli, Marv, and Mike take care of this quietly. We don't need the extra attention so close to our destination. Eli: We got this. If their runner zombies run back here so we can get fire support. Mike: The one that is going to need some fire support is you! Eli: Maybe, there's no shame in getting help. Mike: Watch me take out the most zombies! Mike charged in headfirst without even giving it a second thought. When he approached the zombies, all of them started to rush after him. Mike ran through them and got a bunch of distance so he could take a clean swing. The first zombie approached Mike and got knocked to the ground in one hit. Then Marv and I charged in so we could give him back up. Two zombies were lagging behind the rest. I got towards one and swung for the knees, then proceeded to bash the zombie skull in until I heard a loud crunch sound. As I look up, Marv did the same thing I did, and I look in Mike's direction. He was hitting and running. Every time he knocked down a zombie, it would get back up and run after him.
Eli: Mike, come back here! We can take two of them down. Mike dashed back to us while juking out the runner zombies. One zombie was on his ass, Marv and I told Mike to slide as he sprinted back to us. Mike slid down to the ground while passing us. Marv took a decisive swing to the zombies' legs. As the zombie was falling, my bat lined up perfectly to his face, causing a resounding klang! The zombie's neck to whip back and forth. The rest of the zombies began to go after us; the three of us did not hesitate to rejoin the others. When the three of us ran back to the others, Justin took out his shotgun attached to his back. And walked up towards them and commenced to pick them off one by one. Each zombie that got remotely closed to him was sat down by the shotty.

On the Road to Elspar (Book 1)
The year is 1329. The Huntress' War has entered its tenth year, inflaming competing nationalisms and pitting the Confederacy of Caldrein against one of the continent's superpowers, the Tenereian Union. Desperately outnumbered, the Confederacy has relied on the prowess of its famed Caldran mercenaries, with highly-trained and experienced warbands returning from foreign conflicts to the defense of their homeland, and it is on their backs that Caldrein has successfully mounted a valiant defense for a decade. But they are losing, and day by day, with all the grace of a sledgehammer, the vast Tenereian armies take one more bit of Caldran territory, one footstep at a time. Sixteen-year-old Neianne from the village of Caelon has submitted herself to Faulkren Academy, one of the centuries-old institutions established to train the next generation of Caldrein's elite soldiers of fortune, to learn the ways of wars for three years before embarking upon the defense of her country. Her dryad family once hailed from reclusive woodland communes isolated from Caldrein's complicated mainstream society, and her upbringing leaves the shy village girl unprepared to suddenly train alongside other apprentices from backgrounds as low as the dirty slums of Caldrein's cities and as high as the halls of aristocratic power. Yet the war is eroding the norms and traditions that the Caldran people have long considered part of their national mythos, and the tensions within the confederacy that have long simmered under the surface - race, class, community, identity - are slowly but surely dividing its people, and Neianne must grow and discover who she really is, even as the war that she is steadfastly training for comes to its inexorable end... On the Road to Elspar is a fantasy quest - a work of interactive fiction wherein readers get to vote on what happens next at critical junctures - that is the first entry in a story that follows Neianne of Caelon, which first began on July 20, 2016. Originally a three-part in medias res prologue to a larger story titled On the Elsparian Road, it was eventually decided that this section - which covers Neianne's three years at Faulkren Academy - become its own independent story due to length, structural, and accessibility reasons. Despite this being a reader interactive work of fiction, due to logistical and verification concerns, voting will only be counted on its thread on the forum Sufficient Velocity, where this story originally began. As such, the content here on Royal Road serves as a story-only archive. You are, of course, entirely welcome to enjoy On the Road to Elspar as a conventional work of fiction, just as you are welcome to comment, discuss, and provide critique. But if you would like to participate in the voting, then I would be honored to welcome you on Sufficient Velocity. To facilitate accessibility and to ensure the best reading experience, this story-only version of On the Road to Elspar will be updated at a periodic pace, even though further content exists, so as to not overwhelm new readers on Royal Road.
