《aiAI: Love's Logic》Chapter 9: D.U.ai

We left the suburban area and headed back on the road; the GPS in the car sprang to life and showed Myla where to go next. We got back on the green fields, and the sun had finally pierced the skies. The light breathe life into the vibrant scenery but this time I had the windows up since the once cool morning breeze was replaced by the hot beams of the sun. I turned to my partner, whose hair reflected the light rays in an almost blinding fashion. Her gaze was completely focused on the road ahead with her signature stern and serious face.
May as well kill the silence.
"Welp, that was something."
"..."
"Surprised it's already been a good hour or two since we left, huh, guess that's why we don't have too many clients per day."
"..."
"Hellooooo Earth to Myla?"
"If you want to talk, the best I can do is to tell you to be quiet and to read up on our next client."
"Right."
Guess if I wanted to kill the silence, I'd have to kill her.
I thought but realized that would also result in my death.
"Y'know..."
"Hmm?"
"I still don't exactly think we're doing the right thing."
"I couldn't care less about what you think."
"Hey, at least listen. Anyway, thinking about it back then me, and my ex had problems like this too."
"Mhm."
"We'd get into little squabbles and later on realize how dumb they were, we never once thought of getting someone else involved though."
"Perhaps this is your realization that you were doomed from the start?"
"No, no, what I mean is that...Well.."
"Go on." She said seemingly not out of interest but out of the desire to end the conversation quickly.
"Well, I don't think creating these relationships like this is exactly right, but by helping them out like this, I could get used to it," I said with a small smile and continued.
"Hell, if we had some of you guys on our case, maybe I wouldn't have ended up like this."

"I doubt even we could have salvaged you."
"Har har, thanks a lot. So much for creating and mending beautiful relationships."
I joked as I looked outside again. Gone were the bright green fields and hills as we began to enter the city proper. It was a fairly sizeable town with a skyscraper or two and residential buildings everywhere. You could find malls, convenience stores, apartments, hotels your usual array of buildings all cleaned up and relatively new as the government wanted a more modern look to the place.
So this is where all my tax money went. I live too far to notice most of the time.
I thought before deciding to pass the time by argui- I mean striking up another friendly conversation with my respectful coworker and partner again.
"So, how about you? Why'd you join this place especially so young?"
"Eager to find ways to insult me, I presume?"
"In most cases, yes, but seeing as we're gonna be stuck with each other for the foreseeable future, may as well know your story since you know mine."
"I'd rather not have someone prod me for my life, especially not someone who I could see using it for blackmail."
Ahaaa. She's got me there.
"But I assume if I don't give you an answer, you'll just find another reason to start annoying me."
"You assume correctly, dear partner."
I said with a smirk, which only earned more contempt from my so-called partner. She let out a small sigh before opening her mouth and answering.
"To end this as quickly as humanly possible. I am indebted to them,"
"Indebted how, though?"
"I thought I said as quickly as humanly possible, or could it be your mental capacity is so poor that you can't be considered human anymore?"
"Ok, now you're going overboard."
Seriously her tongue gets sharper by the minute.
"Still though, were you like found at the side of the road as a kid and taken in by them where you had to work manual labor for half a decade and once you were old enough they offered you a position in their workforce out of goodwill?"

"What? No, absolutely not."
"Well then, maybe you're the child of an exec and was given the job for free hence why you can act useless all the time?"
"Firstly, if I was the child of an exec I would most likely still be attending college, and second without me our earlier client's relationship would be in shambles."
"Then..."
"What is it now?"
"You agreed to work for them for free, and as soon as you turned 18 and in turn, they'd match make you with a rich foreigner overseas?"
She gave me an exasperated and annoyed look after the absurd but in my opinion, completely plausible scenario.
"If you'd put that mental energy into work, we would be the CEOs of this company by now."
She breathed a sigh and continued on her drive. I was for the most part satisfied in terms of having fun at her expense, but not so much in terms of getting any closer to knowing her background.
Oh well, not like knowing anything would stop her from speaking knives towards me.
We left the cityscape behind and returned to the familiar green fields of the highways. Traffic was scarce luckily and we were nearing our destination according to the GPS when Myla broke the silence.
"We're arriving soon."
"I can see that."
"Have you read the client's file yet."
She said with no urgency in her voice as she looked straight at the road, which slowly revealed a large neighborhood.
"Uh... Crap."
"I told you earlier, didn't I? Quickly at least read their name."
"Well, if it's that much, don't you think you should know it?"
"Well...In most cases, Alexandre reads their names and I learn it from him during their conversations."
"Ok, now you are actually being useless."
"Just hurry up. We're getting near the house."
We started passing by more and more houses when I finally managed to pull out the folder containing the files from the glovebox.
Did she organize this? I can't find a goddamn thing.
I rustled through the folders when Myla spoke up.
"For your information, it was you who had scattered everything in there and forgot to fix it earlier."
"Thank you for the help."
I finally found the folder as I opened it up and began searching for the name on the schedule and the folder.
"Got it. Now let's see he-"
"Destination reached, please, stop here."
The GPS signaled, and I hit my head on the dashboard as the vehicle hit a screeching halt.
"The least you could do is warn me! Jesus."
"The GPS did so, didn't it? And hurry up, we took too much time at our earlier client, and we'll be late soon."
She said as she opened the door and went outside, but only then did I notice that the files had scattered all across the floor after I headbutted the dash.
Crap. Guess I'll just ask for their name.
I got out of the car and followed Myla on the path towards the door.
"I'll just have to ask for their name."
"How unprofessional, but we don't have time, so it will have to do."
"How caring of you to not worry about me."
I said as we walked up to the door. The house was fairly small, and the porch looked oddly cozy with the single rocking chair and potted plants scattered about as if the style of decoration was familiar to me.
I wouldn't mind living here actually,
I rang the doorbell and shouted.
"Good morning! We're surveyors from aiAI industries, and we're here to inquire on your matchmaking request."
"Coming!"
I heard a muffled female voice shout back.
What a cute voice.
I thought, but that was when the door opened, and my own voice was taken away. She had long, straight brown hair that glistened in the morning sun. I could make out her large brown eyes from behind her glasses and she had a smile that won an award, from me of course. She was still my type and exactly my age.
"Amanda?"
"Eh?"
I should've crashed the car after all.
