《dreadnaught: scifi apocalypses space marine》chapter 5: path of the Dreadnaught

By the time David got the group of over sixty people to the entrenched cosplaying troopers, David had to kill three more people. Two of them attacked him while the third was a woman who tried to take the revolver on his hip. He put the Ka-Bar into the side of her skull and out the other before he realized she might have been just trying to help. But not likely as the recoil of the gun was impossible to handle without some sort of heavy brace. Otherwise, it would shatter your wrists and maybe even your arms. Besides, there was no ammo.

When he got the last of the people behind the makeshift barricades he was greeted by a cosplayer looking like Reco from the 1990s release. But thirty years older.

“ Names Charles. Good job getting those people over here.”

David took the offered hand before pulling the revolver off his hip.

“ How do you have bullets?”

Charles laughed as he pulled the mag out of his gun.

“ Whatever bullshit that happened made that easy. You need to get the grunt class and buy the {Mana Reload} perk. Bullets do shit for damage but they are free.”

David blinked and found his screen and saw a class selection screen. Which only had three choices and one was grayed out.

“ Nice meeting you commander Charles. I need to get with my team and check the equipment. Perhaps afterward we can figure out what we are going to do.”

As David began to walk off his radio pinged him. It was Charles.

“ Leaving here is a bad idea. Right now we got a defensible position.”

David chimed in back.

“ Not up here though. You got a range advantage, but not the numbers. I am thinking of the parking garage. We should be able to secure it and set up a temporary base. There should only be about four entrances a pair could hold easily till backup appears.”

There was a pause as David reached for his minigun.

“ I’ll think about it.”

David did not dwell on it longer as he switched to his private channel.

“ Rick, you think you can look at this thing. See if you can make it work? John, do you think you can try to get in contact with the military? Let them know there are non-aggressive survivors here.”

They both nod as they each start working on their respective jobs. David however took a look at his class choices.

[current tier 2 warden (heavy armor)- please choose a specialization.

Spartan- Unavailable

Juggernaut- A mix of a defensive and offensive specialist. The Juggernaut is a heavy combat foot soldier who has a balanced build around heavy weapons and heavy armor. While the shorter range and slower than the Spartan, the Juggernaut can take hits and dish them out. A Juggernaut can work on any team and can further specialize.

Dreadnought- A defensive specialist. The Dreadnought is a heavy combat foot soldier who specializes in defense. Unlike the Juggernaut who can use long-range weapons or Spartan who can equip a movement-enhancing jetpack. The Dreadnought comes with the best shield generator and can use to shield others. This is at the cost of personal speed.

Spartan -> Juggernaut -> Dreadnought -> Spartan]

Personally, David wanted the Spartan because he thought a jetpack would be cool. For all of two seconds. Then he turned serious. If he had to put things into gaming terms, the Spartan was the main DPS while the Juggernaut was a mix of DPS and Tanking. The Dreadnought was then the Main Tank. Closing his eyes he began to visualize what he could do in each of the classes. As a Juggernaut, he could do it all. Move, shoot and most importantly survive. But for how long. His suit was, in theory, still tied to the power generator system beside him. It is a liability he has to defend or he will have to give up on his armor till something more permanent could be found. Then the Dreadnought appeared in his mind. He pictured him standing his ground at what he presumed to be hundreds of green-skinned undead. Even as his allies started to fall and turn he would stand defiant against them all. Even as his allies ran away he would stand... alone... forever...

“ No, if two bad marriages have taught me anything, there is always a chance. I chose Dreadnought.”

[Congratulations, your main class has changed into t3 Dreadnaught. +1 to a Physical or Mental stats at each level. You are now level 2 Dreadnaught.

Instantly David could feel a change on his skin. The suit seemed to press a little more against his body and his head seemed a little more clearer.

“ Well that is a thing. Show skill physical options.”

What appeared for David was hundreds of pages with nearly a dozen abilities on each page.

“ Narrow down to class specific. Narrow further by meeting requirements to use.”

The supposed thousands of choices were narrowed down to a few dozen.

“ Lets see, as a tank, I should have a defensive ability first. Ah, here we go.”

[{Protective Shielding} (one point) lvl 1: doubles personal defense rating for a set amount of time. Shielding can be weakened and eventually destroyed. Cost 50 mana. Cast duration 15 minutes. CD 2 hours.]

“ That will work for now. Now how about something offensive.”

After inverting the skills from defense to offense a similar number of skills appeared before him. In truth a few of the choices intrigued him. Such as {Power Shot} and {Blanket Fire} but something caught his eye he could not ignore.

[{Overheat} (one points) lvl 1: use the residual heat around you to increase your weapons damage with elemental fire damage. Damage increases based on the temperature the weapon achieves. Costs 50 mana. Lasts 2 minutes. CD 30 minutes. Applies to all equipped weapons, if being wielded or not. (does not cause damage if not equipped)]

With a smirk he picked it and moved over to the mental or passive abilities.

[physical skill points remaining: 1]
