《Freshman Year》Chapter Three

"Hey Piper," Dylan greeted me with a brilliant smile on his face. I was really dreading telling him that I couldn't date him.

"Hi," I said, wiping my hands on the back of my pants.

Dylan looked at me weird. He cocked his head to the side and looked me over. "Are you alright?"

"Um...well you see." How do you tell somebody that you really like them but your best friend won't let you date? "We can't go out."

Dylan looked at me like I was a unicorn. "What? Why not?"

At this time my sister walked in. "Maya, why are you here?" I asked, pushing her away.

"Can't I come see my wittle sister?" she asked, laughing. "Oh hey, Dylan. Am I interrupting?"

Dylan's confusion had turned into anger. "Yes Maya, you are. You see, Piper over here was just telling me how we can't date. Would you know anything about this?"

Maya was now mad. I gave a nervous laugh as she folded her arms and gave me the death stare. "No, I don't. Piper?"

I didn't know what to say so I said, "Sam."

"What?" Dylan asked.

"You aren't going out with Dylan because of your bitch of a friend?"

"What?" Dylan demanded.

I turned to him. "Sam likes you and she made me promise not to see you."

Dylan unfolded his arms. "But I don't like Sam. She's rude as a joke, randomly hits people, and pushes people aside until she needs something."

"True. But she's my best friend."

"But I really like you."

"Aw," Maya said, putting her arm around me, "you two are so cute."

"Maya."

"Oh sorry, bye." And she ran off.

Dylan turned and smirked at me. "Piper, I know I'm not supposed to give you advice till the third date but if you told her that you liked me and she said you can't date me then she's not a such a great friend."

"Well, I kinda didn't tell her." I looked at my hand.

"Why not?" he exclaimed.

"Well we were talking and then right when she left she said that she was gonna try to date you."

"Piper you're the only one who I want to do this with."

I lifted my head and scrunched my eyebrow. "Do what?"

"This," was all he said. Then in one quick moment, he stepped forward and kissed me. I had never been kissed before. And I was pretty sure that I was doing it wrong. I heard a gasp and a few of the guys whistled. He stepped away and I looked away.

"Well that was fun," was all he said with a smirk before he grabbed my hand and pulled me to his desk. A guy was holding my hand! My brain was on overdrive.

Once I sat down Dylan kicked his feet up and put his arms around the back of the head.

"He freakin kissed me," I told Kim and Alana at lunch the next day. I saw Sam glaring at me from her table. It didn't bug me. Last year on the last day of school she made me leave her table so this was on her.

"Oh my gosh, really," Alana said, she looked like she was about to cry, she was so happy. I had filled her and Kim in on me and Sam's friendship at marching band practice yesterday.

"I'm so happy for you. Anyways so your date's tomorrow. Are you nervous?" Kim asked.

"Duh. This is my first real date. And I honestly don't know why he likes me."

"What, a boy couldn't like you?" Alana snarked.

"Well..." I thought about Blake.

Kim rolled her eyes. "The answer is yes. A boy could like you." I blushed.

"Now onto the important stuff. What are you gonna wear?"

I laughed.

"Wear to what?" a voice asked. All three of us looked up. Sam was standing there. "I was on my way to throw out some trash. Do you have a party or something?"

"Um..." was my clever response.

Kim helped me. "She has a date."

Sam's eyebrow raised. Next thing I knew she was sitting next to me. "Who's the lucky guy?" she asked.

I tried to beg the girls with my eyes not to say anything. "Oh you know him," Alana said with a harsh undertone. "I believe his name is Dylan Brown."

Sam turned to me, her mouth slowly opening. "You're going out with Dylan?"

Of course, now Dylan had to walk by. He saw me so he gestured to Alana to move over and sat down on the other side of me. "Dylan, I think you should leave," I told him. Why was he doing this? Sam was right next to me.

He cocked his head and smirked. "No thanks," he said before placing his lips on mine. I felt somebody yank my hair.

"Sam, what the heck?" I demanded.

"What the heck? You're saying this to me? You know I like him."

Dylan cut in, "But I don't like you." To show that he really meant that he put his arm around my shoulder. I glared at him.

"Piper, how could you?"

Kim then shouted, "Sam just shut up! If you want to stop being her friend 'cause of this then go ahead. It's not like you were that great a friend beforehand."

Sam gasped and then left with her pride. She then went back to her table. Next to her was a girl who used to bully me. I hated her but, of course, Sam was great friends with her.

"Guys stop," I begged. I grabbed Dylan's hand and removed it from my shoulder.

Alana stabbed her chicken with her fork. "I don't get what you're trying to protect? She's a horrible friend."

I sighed. "I'm the kinda person who can be screwed over a thousand times and yet I'll still be there when you need me." I then turned to Dylan. "But you better not get any ideas."

Dylan held his hands up and smirked at me. "I would never."

"Also, why the heck did you kiss me?"

He shrugged his shoulders. "One, I'm a guy and when I see a pretty girl I kiss her. Two, Sam needs to be put in her place. You're not gonna do it so I had to."

"She's my best friend," I repeated.
