《Demigods Meet Mortals》Tyler Smith (Reyna Ramírez-Arellano)

Tyler stared down at the open book on his desk, as if willing for words to appear, so he wouldn't have to write them down himself. He was a nerd - Tyler didn't fight it, he knew it was true. But that didn't mean he enjoyed having to write down notes in every single class, for every single day of his life. It didn't help that Greek and Roman Mythology was his least favourite subject, especially not when they've just been made mandatory in almost all schools in America.
There seemed to only be one thing that made Mythology even remotely interesting, and that was Reyna Ramírez-Arellano. Despite being dyslexic and slightly ADHD, Reyna somehow never got bad grades in school, though she's been in a teacher's bad graces more than once. Tyler was sure that in some rule book of some random school in the district, Reyna having better grades than him meant he should've despised her - but he didn't. Tyler wasn't petty by any means, he liked learning almost as much as he liked eating cookies-and-cream ice-cream. And besides, she could always made something interesting happen in class.
Despite seeming like he was paying attention, not a word coming out of Mr. Wyvil's mouth was being processed by Tyler's brain. He could always revise at home. Maybe. Or perhaps he could fail Mythology - he was never good at it anyways.
"Miss. Ramírez-Arellano." Came Mr. Wyvil's voice, stern in the way a father would speak to his son who broke the window for the fifth time. Tyler turned to Reyna, and realised that there a soft vibration was coming from her, or more specifically, the phone in her hands, under the table.
Reyna's lips pressed into a thin line as she frowned, letting out a defeated sigh before answering the call. Mr. Wyvil was in his fifties, and one of those teachers who hated teenagers and their phones. So it became a rule to put a call on speaker phone if a phone dared ring during class. Nobody liked the rule, but nobody was brave enough to object to it.

Reyna glanced briefly at the caller ID, and Tyler caught a glimpse of the name Piper McLean on the screen. It had capital letters in all the right places, and had no emojis or anything beside the name. "Piper, what's the problem?" asked Reyna, quickly turning speaker phone on after receiving a pointed look from Mr. Wyvil. A muffled yell came from the other side of the call, and heavy pants made their way through the microphone.
"Nothing, nothing. Just thought I'd let you know that since you missed that attack on Camp Jupiter, I could bring it to you." The girl's words were casual enough - like she wasn't speaking of attacks on demigod camps. Reyna's jaw set as she seemed to process the information, before it turned to a small grin.
Another yell.
"Piper McLean, did you just say you're bringing monsters to my high school?" Reyna's words sounded harsh, though the absolute glee in her tone was easily recognised. A laugh came from the other side, but there were no more words as another yell came through, this time more clear, and not made fuzzy from the quality of the call. It took a second for Tyler to realise the yell came from outside the school, down in the opening in front of the library.
Something between a laugh and a gasp escaped Reyna, and she held the phone to her face, eyes still trained on the sight below her on the grass. It was two girls, one with slightly dark skin and brown hair with what looked to be a feather through a braid and a dagger in her hand. The other was tanned, with blond hair pulled back into a ponytail, and a weird-looking sword in her hand. The brunette was waving at where she must've thought Reyna was, whilst the blond battled the monsters in front of her.

"I don't know whether to kill you, or hug you right now." Said Reyna. "But I'm sure as Hades not going to let Annabeth get all the fun." Her voice was a happier tone than Tyler's ever heard it. And at the moment, he wasn't entirely sure Reyna remembered she was in a classroom with other people.
Without another word, Reyna hung up on the call, and slid a dagger out of a sheath in her backpack. Staring at the weapon, Reyna flipped it once in her hand, as if she was handling an object familiar yet stranger to her. Nobody objected when the dagger-wielding girl moved to leave the classroom, nobody except Mr.Wyvil. "Where do you think you're going-" he started, before Reyna spun around and cut him off, excitement glinting in her eyes as she bounced on the balls of her feet. More hyper than Tyler's ever seen her.
"I'm Reyna Avila Ramírez-Arellano, daughter of Bellona, and praetor of Camp Jupiter." said Reyna, power radiating off her in waves. She held herself and spoke the way a leader would. It was almost laughable how Mr. Wyvil took a step back. Amusement flashed in Reyna's eyes as she flicked her wrist, the dagger in her hand extending into a long sword-like weapon. She stepped out the door, gave a small respectful nod as if it meant anything, before running off with her backpack slung over one shoulder.
Tyler wanted to watch her fight with the monsters, and he would have, if he hadn't fainted as soon as the demigod left the room.
