《LOVELESS》Chapter 59

Sam pulls up to the side of a college building where Yemi attends her aviation program. Yemi walks out and immediately spots his truck.

Sam disembarks and opens the passenger door for her, causing some women to check him out while a couple of others give Yemi that 'damn, your man is fine' look.

Yemi and Sam are smiling too hard at each other to even notice the stares. They share a quick kiss before Yemi climbs in. She looks out the window and chuckles when she notices two women rolling their eyes at her.

Sam hops in and looks over at Yemi's face. "Why're you shaking your head?"

"'Cause it still shocks me how women react to you."

He waves it off. "Oh. So, how was your class?"

"Well, besides the fact that I kept thinking about this mystery meeting you have me going to... I was able to somewhat focus." She smiles, teasing him.

"Damn. I didn't mean to have that distract you from class."

"It's no big deal, babe. But are you going to finally tell me what it is, now?"

"Yeah." He starts the car back up, and looks out the rear view window before pulling off. Yemi is staring at him the whole time. "...I hired a detective," he finally says, being cautious of his delivery.

"For what? What happened?"

"I got him to look into what..." He glances over at her before finishing his sentence. "...really happened with your mom."

Yemi furrows her eyebrows in confusion. "You got the case reopened?"

"Yeah, I thought maybe it would help you in some way."

"Well... I appreciate you trying to help, babe. But there's not enough evidence to really figure anything out. They said the footage wasn't clear enough."

"They have new technology now that could help with that. Plus, sometimes it takes a second look at things to figure shit out. You know?"

She nods. "Well, did he find something out? Is that what the meeting is about?"

"I think so. He told me before that he wouldn't contact me with an update until he really had something."

"Oh wow."

He glances between her and the road, examining her body language as she looks straight ahead. "What are you thinking?"

She looks at him. "I'm a little nervous."

"...Just know I am here for you. Whatever you need, just let me know."

"How long will it take for us to get there?"

" About 15 minutes. Would you rather him tell me, and I can just tell you what he says?"

"No. I'll go. Thank you."

"Anything for you, ma. I just want you to be able to wake up in the morning knowing that your mom got the justice she needed."

She grabs his free hand, and caresses it. "You're the best."

20 MINUTES LATER

Detective Kennedy walks into a room where Yemi and Sam await his arrival. Yemi anxiously snaps her neck at the detective who is holding a manila folder. Sam stands up to greet him.

"Thanks for coming," the detective greets Sam, shaking his hand. He then then looks over at Yemi as Sam sits back down. "You must be Yemi."

"Yeah." She responds dryly.

"I'm Detective Jeffrey Kennedy. I'm sorry we have to meet under these circumstances."

"It's okay. Did you find out who did it?"

"I did, yes," he responds softly.

"Really?" She asks with a mix of disbelief and hope in her voice.

"Yes, but I think it's best if you read who did it through the statement I received yesterday." He pulls a piece of paper out from his folder and hands it to Yemi.

"Who is it from?"

"A relative."

Yemi starts to read the paper and Sam puts his arm around her shoulder, comforting her. She reads a few lines down, and her expression slowly turns into confusion. She continues reading, and her mouth drops open, gasping in complete disbelief.

Sam looks at her with concern. "What is it?" He asks her, worried about the now angry look on her face. She drops the paper on her lap, and then starts to rub her neck with one hand and then with both.

Yemi stands up, holding her face tightly before slowly pacing the room.

Sam looks at the detective, eager to know what she's read. Detective Kennedy gives Sam a sympathetic look before softly saying to Sam, "...It was her cousin."

Sam's eyes get big before looking over at Yemi who is still pacing. He stands up and then looks back at the detective. "Wait... which one?"

Detective Kennedy gives him that, 'I really wish I didn't have to tell you this' look before opening up his mouth to speak. He sighs. "Briana."

Sam has never looked so shocked in his life. He runs his hand down his face, stopping it at his mouth. He walks over to Yemi just as she stops to look at him.

"Yemi, I'm so sorry." Sam wraps his arms around Yemi and a tear escapes her eye. She starts to hyperventilate and Sam removes his arms with worry in his eyes. "Mamas..."

"Is there anything I can do to help?" The detective asks them.

Sam is too focused on Yemi to respond. "Mamas, I need you to listen to me, okay?"

She looks up at him, still breathing at a rapid rate with tears streaming down like a waterfall.

"Pinch your nostril and breathe through your nose. Can you do that for me?" Sam requests, caressing her face. She nods, and follows his instructions.

"...Now try to slow your breathing, one breath every five seconds."

Yemi forces herself to briefly hold her breath before she starts to slow down her breathing. Sam wipes away her tears as she slowly starts to return to her regular breathing.

"...There you go, mamas. You got it."

She nods as they stare into each other's eyes. A few minutes later, Yemi hugs him tightly, her breathing now back to normal.

"Do you wanna go home?" Sam asks her.

She releases her embrace, shakes her head, then clears her throat before looking over at the detective. "...Is she here?"

"Yes. She's in a holding cell, right now."

"...Can I talk to her?"

"Yemi, you sure you wanna do that, right now?" Sam interrupts, concerned about her emotional state.

"I just want to ask her some things."

Sam and Detective Kennedy look at each other with uncertainty. Yemi notices.

"I'm okay now. Please just let me talk to her."

"...I'll get someone to bring her to the visitation room."

"Will it be behind a glass window?" She inquires.

"Yes ma'am. She won't be able to touch you. So you don't have to worry about that."

"Actually, I don't want a glass there. The glass will just make her feel comfortable. I want her to really feel what I'm feeling, right now."

"We don't have those types of visitation rooms here."

"Can we go to one of those interrogation rooms?"

The detective scratches his ear, trying to figure out the best way to reject her request. "...I know you're hurt, but I can't-"

Sam cuts him off. "Detective, I know you don't want to bend the rules, but I also know you took on this case because the respect you have for my brother. Me knowing that about you, tells me this has to be more than just some case for you. This is personal. The kind of man my brother told me you are... I know you understand when I say Yemi's peace is my peace."

The detective thinks about it for a moment. "...Let me see what I can do." Sam nods before Detective Kennedy leaves him there to comfort Yemi.
