《Phantom Path》Chapter 8: Blessings From The Sea

Carrying Ronnie farther from that disappointing day, a new one comes. Since then, he had locked himself inside his room, using every possible excuse to avoid Sareem at all cost, depressed that his expectations were killed off like a pig that didn't know it was going to be chopped and cooked. He can still hear those tiny squeals of disappointment, as every once in a while since that day, he hears Sareem outside his room trying to talk to him. And speaking of said name, preparing a feast for his master, Sareem hums with his messy apron from all the cooking he has done, levitating around the kitchen as he sets the table, and stomping his way in with an angry face, is Ronnie who finally comes to face with Sareem.
"Ah! Master, you're finally awake from sleeping all those days!" Sareem exclaims in joy. "How was your rest? Did you sleep well? Geez, were you planning on-"
"What the hell is this?!" Ronnie frowns, showing to the spirit the tattoo of a tree engraved at the back of his hand.
"Hmm? It's the mark of our bond," Sareem smiles.
"Jesus Christ. Oh dear lord, save," Ronnie holds his head in stress and vain.
"I don't understand, why are you angry for?" Sareem pouts. "Don't you know it makes me angry when you're angry?"
"What?? Why would you be angry because I'm angry??"
"Don't you know? We are technically one with another. We share the same emotions. Whatever you're feeling, I'll feel it as well," Sareem explains.
"Wha- ugh! No, this is so bad," Ronnie whispers.
"Are you not happy with me? Is it because of how I am? I'm not weird, am I?"
Ronnie looks up at a sad Sareem, his veins bulging from his head, keeping his mouth closed as he looks around at all Sareem had made for him with no intention of eating any, wondering what excuse he'll have to make to escape. But comes Kaia who saves their day with walking in on the conversation, her curly hair messy, and face puzzled.
"Hey!" Ronnie calls, his eyes, looking down at her hand. "What you got there, Kai?"
"Oh, this?" She asks, showing off the symbol on the back of her hand. "I don't know. I woke up and I just saw it there"
"Ah. Hmm, strange," Ronnie goes.
"Hmmmmm," Sareem sounds, drifting towards her in his curiosity.
"Do you know what this is, Sareem?" Kaia smiles, Sareem searching every corner of his brain, trying to figure the origin of the blue mark on her hand of a swirling creature, his eyes lit up as he puts his finger into the air, gasping as he covers his mouth.
"Ahh-Oh, no...I can't recall ever seeing this before," Sareem laughs, scratching his head.
"Geez, thanks for wasting our time, Sareem. Come on, Kaia, let's see if someone else knows," Ronnie says, both of them walking away. "And let's hope they have a sensible answer too"
"Humph!" Sareem front, realizing as they have left him inside the kitchen with everything he had prepared, untouched by his master's hands. "W-Wait, aren't you gonna eat?! I made this all for you, Master!"
Accompanied by Ronnie, Kaia makes her way to Powell's office room, and with a double knock at the door, for them is a quick response, seated down with a cup of tea inside the small office of his. And finishing with explaining when she first saw it, Powell puts his hand to his chin, thinking of what it could be.

"Hmm...forgive me, madam, but it seems my memory might be failing me. It seems I have no knowledge of what it could be," Powell answers. "Have you had any strange dreams as of lately?"
"I...don't think so. I can't even remember what I dreamt last night," She tells him.
"It is quite a strange happening. It seems I may have to do a bit of research," Powell answers.
"Is that so...? I wonder what this is," Kaia replies, very puzzled with her findings.
"May I suggest you browse the internet? Youngers like you seem to be very good with finding anything you want there"
"Is...Is there a dark web in this world??" Ronnie questions, drawing to the edge of his seat.
"Ron," Kaia calls, having Ronnie ease off. "I had one of the others already search for me, but there seems to be nothing on there about it. Maybe it's the way we described it confusingly. And I wonder if it's like Ron's pact, but I haven't made any deal with a spirit though"
"Hmm," Powell sounds, the three of them thinking of what it could be.
"Pardon me," An elven servant comes. "Huh...? I guess I'll come back later"
"Conrad," Powell calls. "What brings you here?"
"Well...the others said you were giving out free money," Conrad explains.
"What??" Powell questions.
"Am...Am I not getting free money??" Conrad asks, awkwardly standing by the door, Powell taking off his glasses in holding his forehead as he silently laughs together with the others.
"Unfortunately, you were pranked again," Powell chuckles.
"Aw shi..." Conrad sounds, stopping himself from cursing in front of them.
"Well, now that you're here, do you know anything of this tattoo on the madam's hand?"
"Tattoo?" Conrad questions, seeing the tattoo on the back of her hand as he gets closer. "Excuse me"
Before her, he kneels in taking her hand in his as he inspects it. And after a minute, his hand begins to shake, looking up to her eyes with astonishment in his expression.
"What is it?? Have you seen this before??" Kaia asks him.
"H-Huh?" Conrad goes, quickly taking his hand away. "No...no, I haven't. But I know a friend that could probably tell what this is"
"Don't tell me he's gonna suddenly get shocked then get amnesia like you and Sareem," Ronnie challenges.
"Hush," Kaia goes, slapping Ronnie on the leg.
"I'm sure he won't," Conrad awkwardly laughs. "A matter of fact! I'll call him right away"
Onto the outside of the room he goes, getting on his phone where he begins muttering behind the closed door. And quickly he gets back into the room, smiling as he pats his legs.
"He said he can meet right now," Conrad tells them. "You guys will like him. He's cool. He's like a big brother to me"
"Conrad," Powell says, looking at him with worried eyes.
"Don't worry...he won't cause us trouble. I'm sure he won't," Conrad assures.
"Right now?" Ronnie asks, looking at Kaia.
"Hmm...where's Daunte and Toro?" She asks.
"They've gone out to look at some quests, and to do some training," Ronnie answers.
"I can drive you there if you want. He said he'll meet us at a restaurant just in the city," Conrad suggests. "I have a license as well...you'll be alright"
"You don't sound so sure about your driving skills, Conrad," Ronnie says.

"Alright," Kaia sighs, pinching Ronnie's leg. "Lemme get dressed properly and I'll be out soon. I'll be back soon, Mr.Powell"
"Yes, madam, safe travels. I hope you'll find your answer," Powell sends them off.
Leaving Powell back to his work, the three of them get ready in their own ways, with Kaia showering, fixing her hair, picking out her clothes, and putting on some makeup, onto meeting the others outside, where she takes a seat inside the car. Driving down the long road of their mansion is a brightly animated city the see below, welcoming them with usual traffic and people walking down the streets, all going about their daily lives.
"So, they do have other races here. I expected full-on brawls from the elves on the other races...kinda disappointing," Ronnie says, seeing a group of fellow humans at a pub as they enjoy a drink, into meeting his eyes with Conrad's who peeps at him through the rear-view mirror, both of them awkwardly smiling at each other as they stop by a stoplight, having Kaia shake her head."O-Of course that would be bad...yeah"
Upon their destination they reach, to the beautiful architecture of a restaurant where they shall meet Conrad's friend, a five-star location that will surely soothe their taste buds with an exquisite taste. And to the receptionist of the fine establishment, Conrad checks-in for their table, and as instructed, they head upstairs, greeted by the image of the city through the grand clear glass of the building.
"There he is," Conrad points, waving to his friend who greets him as well. "He's in a meeting right now, so we'll just go at our table until he finishes up"
And so they pace to their table, slowly passing his friend, into a quick glance from being a bit more curious than the others, her heart skipping a beat at comprehending how handsome Conrad's friend is, meeting her eyes with his, taking in his cracked glasses covering his ocean-coloured eyes, and his lips not even cracking a smile, taking their seats with watching as the friend talks, not being able to take her eyes off the back of his head.
"What? Did you fall for him already?" Ronnie mocks.
"Ugh...quiet," Kaia shakes her head, taking up to the menu, shocked by what she reads. "Isn't this too expensive for us??"
"What? Kaia, we're rich now," Ronnie chuckles, taking out from his pocket a black debit card. "Now, lemme see what's on the menu"
"Where did you get that from?? Let me see it," She questions, reaching to take it away from him.
'"Mr.Powell gave it to me since I'm the most responsible," Ronnie smirks, dodging her attempt of taking it away.
"Tch. Yeah right"
"Now, how about we order something while we wait," Conrad suggests, and comes a waitress by their table who takes their order, onto them waiting for a while, getting their food served to their table which they feast on as they watch the city and night sky, chatting about, and laughing at Daunte and Toro who's missing this grand taste.
"Man, we should leave the house more," Ronnie suggests. "We have all this money to our name, why not use it? And we should get new phones too"
"I know...but this isn't exactly ours," Kaia explains, feeling a bit of guilt.
"It's okay, madam," Conrad welcomes. "The late madam wouldn't mind. She left all of her money for us anyway"
"What did she do to have all this money, by the way?" Ronnie asks, intrigued by her life once lived.
"Oh, she was apart of the royal family," Conrad reveals to them.
"What??" Both Kaia and Ronnie gasp.
"Royal family?? No, you're lying," Ronnie fixes his glasses.
"It's true. She was the daughter of the late Dutch and Dutchess, and they ruled over our region," He explains.
"Holy shit," Kaia gasps.
"So, we're basically taking her place then," Ronnie utters, slightly tilting a frown on Conrad's face. "S-Sorry"
"It's fine," Conrad sighs, remembering her warm presence. "I just...can't believe she's gone already"
That happy atmosphere cuts into joyful memories that saddens Conrad, with the both of them staying quiet in his thinking, hearing the ambience of chatter from others who've come to dine with their own company, and glass that clinker about.
"I'm gonna go to the bathroom for a sec," Kaia tells them.
"Yes, ma'am," Conrad nods. "Do you know where you're going?"
"I'll find my way," Kaia smiles, getting up to go on her way to the bathroom, watched by the friend as she heads out.
After finishing her business, by the basin she goes to wash her hand, thinking of why the Overseer chose them and what for purpose, especially being in the home of late madam. And beside her, three elven women in their expensive-looking clothing brands, looking after their makeup in the mirror, one of them glancing at Kaia, giggling as she turns to her friends to gossip. Wondering what that was all about, Kaia's confidence begins to dwindle, feeling small to these beautiful elven women, finishing up and quickly getting out. And on her way out, she passes the group of good-looking elves that are seated beside them at the corridor, one whistling as they pass her, which startles the girl.
"Woah," One sounds. "She has a big one. How about we play a game of rock-paper-scissors for who gets to carry her to a hotel tonight"
"What? No way," A second laughs."Look at her face. It's bad, even for a human girl"
"Hey, you know what they say about ugly girls with low self-esteem, right?" A third asks, all of them laughing, thinking Kaia cannot hear them as she sighs having to face this even in a new world.
"Hey," One stops her. "You're cute, how about you come hang out with us? We're thinking of going clubbing later?"
"What?" Kaia gulps, her eyes like laser beams to him as the others in the background chuckle at her, shaking her heart.
"Wanna go?" He asks once more.
"Huh," She scoffs. "First you call me ugly, and now you're calling me cute so you can go clubbing with me?"
"A-Oh, you heard that?" He cringes, awkwardly laughing it off. "Well, I mean you're not from here, after all. It's just how we joke around in Wohlstand, that's all"
"Well, I'm not interested...sorry," She says, turning to walk away.
"Wait," The elf demands, grabbing onto her nervous hand. "Aren't you being a little rude? You're walking away when I'm talking to you"
"No, mister. I'm not some easy human girl, so I won't be sucking your dick tonight," Kaia responds, having the others in the background laugh at their friend. "I have friends to go back to. Let go of me, we're done here. Get some other bitch to go play with"
And she pulls her hand away, walking from the nonsensical conversation, with his friends laughing at him which reddens his face in embarrassment, onto him catching her once more, frightening the girl who only pulls as she knows of nothing else to do.
"Tch! You are a little bitch, huh? Who do you think you are to talk to me that way??" He says, tightly gripping her hand this time, and released is Kaia's own from his grip, by the one who comes to her rescue, her heart beating rapidly at his appearance, Condrad's friend who comes in between.
"Fredrik Lehmann. What would your father, a well-known chairman, say about you being aggressive to a girl you don't know?" The friend asks the elf.
"Huh...?" The elf chuckles. "And who the fuck are you?"
"It doesn't matter who I am," The friend replies. "It's best you leave my guest alone, we have matters we must speak of"
"Look, stay out of our business, and wait your turn. This has nothing to do with you. I'm still talking to her"
"Hm," The friend sounds, taking out his phone with a video of the scene, showing the elf's aggressive behaviour. "Are you sure you want to keep this going? You shouldn’t push this any further...I don't think your father would be happy about this, Mr.Fredrik"
And backing he does, looking into the eyes of the man who intimidates him, fearing what his father will do, stomping his way into the bathroom with his friends to wash off his frustration, finally leaving Kaia alone.
"Are you alright?" The friend asks, Kaia shyly nodding her head.
"May I have your name, madam?" The friend asks.
"K-Kaia," She tells him, shy with nervous eyes.
"Milo. You can call me Milo," He says.
Kaia bursts out in a small giggle, not being able to control herself, stopping as she realizes how rude her act was, seeing that even now he does not have a smile on his face, fixing her dress as a smooth way out of the cringing moment.
"S-Sorry," She tells him. "There's a drink in my home country with that name"
"Hmm," He nods, fixing the watch on his hand. "Maybe I should go there and try it one day for myself. Come, the others are waiting"
"Maybe you could...if that's even possible," She whispers as she walks behind, and they both get back to their table, getting a gentle touch on her back as he sits her down at the table like a true gentleman, impressing Ronnie who watches and smirks at Kaia.
"Alright," Milo says, fixing his cracked glasses, as the group of guys get back to their table, with one realizing he had left his wallet while he was in the bathroom "Now"
"Huh...?" The second sounds. "I think money from my wallet is gone"
"What?" The first goes, already frustrated from what happened before, looking towards the first person he suspects, kicking his chair as he walks towards them with chuckling. "Hey! First, you talk rudely to me, and now you steal from my friend??"
"Who the hell are you?" Ronnie asks.
"Wow! shit!" The first laughs, pointing at Ronnie. "Look at this talking pitbull over here"
"And again, who the fuck are you suppose to be??" Ronnie raises an eyebrow.
"C-Calm down, Sir. None of us went-" Conrad goes to say, grabbed by the shirt by the elf.
"Shut it!!" The elf commands. Don't you know who I am?? hmm?? Come on...give us back what you stole"
"Sir, she just came ba-"
Conrad is slapped across the face by the elf, bursting his bottom lip, frightening Kaia into her mind going blank, woozy and stressed from the situation, with her heart trembling with fear. And seeing his Conrad hurt, Ronnie joins the fuss, grabbing onto the shirt of their assaulter, anger in his grip, warning the elf of letting go of their butler, all of this happening as Milo just sits patiently and observes, with the everybody watching as it goes down as well.
"Stop it!!" Kaia shouts. "Why would I steal anything from you??"
"Cut the bullshit! Give us back our money, you filthy savages!!" The elf says in disgust. " First your kin came here once and beat and killed many of our people, and now you come to be just like them. Hurry it up before my dad hears about this and have you all in prison!!"
"No, stop. Please," A waitress comes, sweating as she bows with her trembling body. "It was me. I'm sorry, p-please, I'll take responsibility! They had nothing to do with it! Forgive me!!"
"Ah, you fucking bitch," The robbed elf hisses, taking up a bottle of wine. "Didn't your parents teach you about stealing from others?!"
"I'm sorry, please...I'm sorry," Her voice shakes, wiping the sweat from her face as she gulps her dry spit, fearing their superior power as the wealthy.
"God, you fucking rat!!" The robbed elf shouts, smashing the lifted bottle into the head of the waitress with a powerful force, having her fall onto the knees in silence, still conscious as she begins bleeding from her head, and her mouth whimpering from the shock.
"Tch. Don't bother crying." The robbed elf says, using his feet to push her head. "I'm teaching you a lesson. That's good. Kneel, you fucking thief!"
Her mind dropped to silence, her body cold and numb, she watches as the waitress is troubled, hearing the muffled voices of everyone around her, ears ringing and nostrils blocked by the pressure of her stress, stifled by the atmosphere. And in her silent stance, gone away is their cussing of one another, as comes a sight that renders them speechless, witnessing a collection of countless of droplets that rise to the air; wine, water, sweat, and even the blood of the waitress, all being reflections of the light that the restaurant and city outside emit, going into the air where they stick like streams of clouds. Flowing hair and angry eyes, Kaia reveals to the elves who are disturbed by what is happening before them, as she bites down on her lips in her anger emerging. And before the elves could say anything to her, into the air is Kaia's hand lifted, and rushing out is the liquid of all the bottles that break apart, freeing the essence within, forming what they can see as the formation of her anger, getting thrown by the glass of her will, colouring their bodies in red wine. Everyone watches as she uses her might, mouths open in awe at the mark gleaming on her hand, their tongues going about as she exercises her power.
"Ma'am, please...calm down," The bleeding waitress pleads to her.
"She's right, Kaia," Ronnie says to her. "Don't do this. It isn't worth it!"
"Madam!" Conrad also calls, but Kaia does not hear them, only her inner thoughts of teaching them a lesson, with the thin glass that cracks as more force applies, striking fear into the elves who have wronged her, the third even pissing his pants in begging for his life.
"Kaia," Milo comes, putting his hand gently on her shoulder. "These men are not worth your energy...breath, control yourself"
In his eyes she looks into, breathing heavily as she ponders his words, finally calming down at his wish, dropping the elves to the ground with her mind at rest. And towards the crowd that watches, MIlo turns them taking their pictures and clips, flashing the room with their phones.
"Ladies and Gentlemen!" Milo states, holding Kaia's hand. "500 years...500 years since the last one came about"
"N-No, it can't be...it can't be! The old legend has returned?!" An old customer says. "But she's human! How is this possible!?"
"Hmm...I guess the Goddess does not discriminate after all. She has chosen a human as her new vessel this time, the one who will protect Wohlstand in our era," Milo declares, lifting her hand, revealing the mark for all to see, their awe becoming so great, they become speechless once more. "Everyone! She is the new priestess the Goddess has chosen, the new priestess of Wohlstand!"
