《A Collection of Short Stories: Quiet Girl》16. Playing Cop

Cassie had next to no clue what it was Shugi did to keep himself from being homeless, beside just being a cop, but she guessed today she'd be finding out. Shugi and her had arranged to meet where he worked and as she got closer she found herself becoming a bit giddy.

For one thing, it'll be hot to see him in his uniform and I've always wanted to see the inside of a police station! Cassie kept herself composed outwardly and got to the doors where she went inside and instantly found Shugi by his red hair.

"You're finally here. Things couldn't be slower today, but I guess that's a good thing as well be able to hang out without anything getting in the way." He said that and a smile followed. Cassie shyly returned it. While he wasn't in his uniform, he still had his badge around his neck which was still hot for one reason or another.

While she was curious to find out the kind of work he did, she figured she couldn't ask too much.

Shugi chuckled, "By that look on your face, it seems like you wanna ask me what I do." Like-

"Well, you never told me past the fact that you were a police officer. I didn't know the kind of work you actually did though."

"Well I kind of couldn't tell you for a while." Shugi took her into an isolated break room where they sat and talked. "I was working an undercover job for a bit. So if you ever saw me I couldn't risk you asking me about it." I barely talk and yet somehow you're worried about me talking to you?

"I get that, but still that's so cool!"

"Oh, are you one of those true crime people?"

She nods, "It interests me, really it's the psychology around it."

"I figured as much, but I guess since we're here we can talk for a bit before I take you out."

"Where are we going?"

"Anywhere, it's just better than being in this stuffy building all day." This place is amazing, I'd rather be in here than outside.

"Alright then, but I'll only ask a few things."

Shugi happily answered any of her questions, but her few turned into an entire list. Cassie asked him any and everything she could, from the most basic to the completely complex. She felt like she could be a cop with how much she asked him, but eventually they were able to get out of the station and Shugi walked with her while explaining what he was doing right now.

"Nothing much is going on in the area. We're waiting for the results to come back on fingerprints in one case but there's so much for them to sort through it's taking a while. So we've had our hands free and it really feels like we got all the crime out of this area for once." I doubt it, but-

"I was curious about something." He hummed, "When you see someone committing a crime and you're off duty, do you think to stop them?"

"Well, we're supposed to, but sometimes I just call the cops and let them handle it. I would only jump straight into action if someone pulled a weapon or had attacked someone." Cassie nods.

"I wonder what others would say?" She began to mumble to herself and Shugi couldn't hold back smiling at her.

"You're really into this aren't you?" She looked at him, "What did you want to be a cop or something?"

"No, my dad was one, but I always found things like that interesting anyways. I love learning about what criminals are capable of, how they can be seemingly normal people just go bad. It scares me sometimes, but knowing there are those like you out there calms me a bit." Shugi looked off with a small chuckle.

"You know how to say things just right don't you?" What's that supposed to mean? "But, I think I dragged you around enough today. Is there anything else you wanna do or ask me?" She shook her head. "Then I guess I can take you home then." Cassie returned to walking with him, but in the back of her mind she felt somewhat nervous now.

All of the images of a cop taking her to her room and her inviting him inside ran through her head and the mental image of handcuffs... She felt like she was drooling. Besides that shit would never happen... Why would I invite him inside? That takes balls I don't have. Cassie relaxed and went back to her inappropriate thoughts as they walked back to the station.
