《Chaos Sequence》Chapter 39: Late to the party

"They're still not here..." Hallengir stared down the hall, the rest of his team were sitting impatiently as they waited for Team A to return to the meeting place.
"They could be fashionably late?" Sweeper hoped that they didn't run into any trouble. "Should we go check on them?"
The Sergeant nodded at her suggestion and started counting the heads of those in his group before signaling them to move forward. From what he gathered the place seems to be one straight path so it will better for them to meet them on the way instead of waiting.
They passed by the doors that the other team opened and suspected that they also didn't find anything of interest. Hallengir had his doubts about the government being so fervent in searching through old buildings since most of them end up being abandoned bunkers or shelled out hovels, the resources spent could be used elsewhere, it wasn't the right time to start reclaiming old territory. Still orders are orders regardless of how annoying they are and at least they aren't being asked to commit anything terrible.
Fred and Reaper took point as they advanced towards where they think Team A is. With more and more open doors and no sign of the other group, Hallengir told them to pick up the pace.
"Did they get ghosted too?" Feeling a little uneasy, Richard carefully surveyed their surroundings.
"Oh crap... did they decide to split up? Is that how they got spirited away?" Dealer wasn't programmed to be afraid of ghost but she did find a lot of evidence pointing to their existence. Like the one time when the lights in her former workplace kept turning on and off or how her socks keep ending up under the couch.
A loud bang in the distance cut their chatter short as they all focused on where the source of the noise was. It was up ahead, all the way up ahead.
"They're in trouble! Everyone move up!" Shouted Hallengir.
Reaper and Sweeper broke into a full on sprint leaving the others behind. "Woah jeez... androids are crazy." Richard remarked as their backs disappeared into the darkness.
"Shit c'mon we have to move as a group!" Fred yelled to get their attention but it was too late. "I suppose we'll just have to act as the surprise back-up..."

"That's fine with me." Dealer said. "And if they end up handling it all then that's even more fine."
----
The darkness of the tunnel was soon replaced by a sterile light that lit up a modern looking room, the change caught the two androids that ran up ahead off guard. Before they can even adjust to their new environment they were attacked by a few blue figures that ran up and tried to grapple them. Their attempt at grabbing them was immediately dodged by the two girls who returned the favour by spraying them in the face with bullets causing them to violently disperse.
Whoever they were they were tough to take down, usually it just takes one good shot in the head to drop an enemy but they were unusually resilient to having their brains blown out.
"They don't seem friendly." Sweeper nervously laughed as she stared at the burnt ground where they used to be on, she couldn't imagine what would've happened if she had let them touch her.
Distant gunshots could be heard throughout the new facility that they were in, there was a high chance it was the other team fighting with these new threats.
"Do you think they tripped the security system?" Sweeper checked around the corner to see if anymore were coming. "Nothing on this side..."
"It could be that." Reaper replied.
There wasn't any signs of struggle at the entrance except for the little scuffle that just occurred so they assumed that the others did something further in to cause them to get attacked. As far as they know the area they were in was relatively safe with a few hostile entities entering it every now and then.
"What is this place?" Sweeper asked, not exactly expecting an answer.
"The Scottish Institute of Myth and Technology." Reaper answered.
"Oh that's nea- waitaminute how do you know that?"
"I read it. Off that wall." She pointed at a wall that had the name engraved onto it, it also included Research Division in smaller text right below it.
They were in some type of research area of this facility but what they were researching was still a mystery. Could it have something to do with the blue enemies Sweeper thought And what does myth have to do with anything? Those thoughts flew around her mind along with the term Scottish until more gunfire caught her attention. Fortunately it didn't seem to be close by.

Sweeper found it weird but the far-off fighting was comforting, it means that even though the others are in danger they're still out there. It would've been more disturbing if it was just silence. As she listened to the sounds she could start to tell that there were multiple battles occurring throughout the facility and started to wonder if they somehow got separated.
While she was busy with that, Reaper made sure to check every entryway to the room that they were in. Nothing to indicate that anyone was coming their way so it seemed like they were safe for now. She turned back to look at where they came from, the long desolate hallway had gouged it's way into this new area and sticked out like a sore thumb.
As she continued to stare at it, the other members of her team appeared out of the darkness finally catching up to them.
"You gals..." Richard was gasping for breathe. "... you're fast."
"S-sorry about that we just wanted to make sure our Captain and the others were okay." For a short second Sweeper had forgotten about the rest of her team.
"Well, don't keep us waiting, are they alright?" Dealer said as she pretended to be tired much to the annoyance of Sweeper.
"About that... we don't know." Sweeper anxiously shook her head. Suddenly the sounds of gunfire got louder again causing everyone to raise their weapons but it soon died down letting Sweeper continue. "Here's what we know so far."
She explained how they were attacked the moment they entered and that she thinks that Team A is currently fighting for their lives in this facility. She wasn't fully certain about it since they only encountered a few of them but she described how much it took to take down the blue people and that they could try other things to see if they can kill them faster.
"So we are dealing with ghosts!" Dealer was happy that she was right but also terrified that she was right.
"Nah I'm not convinced, I mean Reaper and Sweeper killed them right? How can you even kill a ghost?" The concept of dying twice was foreign to Richard so he wrote it off.
"Are you sure they've killed them? Maybe they disappeared to give us a false sense of security." She was not yet convinced, blue figure and disappearing into thin air? This was differently the work of something from the beyond.
"I somehow doubt we were fighting spirits, right Reaper?" Sweeper looked to her comrade for support but the girl in black just shrugged her shoulders.
"So we have that and we also know that we're in an research institute from Scotland." Hallengir tried to keep track of what they've learned. "Well this place is ancient, Scotland hasn't been a thing for almost a century now."
"We have two options here sir." Fred turned to Hallengir. "We could either go and rescue Emma and the others or we can leave now and call for back-up."
"Are you saying we should just leave them?" Richard got in front of Fred's face.
"No. I'm pointing out our two options. They didn't say that we would have to engage and clear out any threats, just to tell them if we find anything interesting. And if we were to leave, I trust that Emma and Cid would be able to find their way out."
"We're staying." Reaper spoke up. "Even if you decide to leave, we'll stay behind to get everyone out."
"And that's perfectly fine. Even if we did join forces, we're still two different squads."
"Listen here buddy, if they're in danger we have to save them!" Richard started to raise his voice.
"Knock it off you two, I've already made my decision." Hallengir got in between the two soldiers and pushed them apart. Even with a mask on the androids could still feel his intense gaze. "We're going in, we'll assist the other team and find out what's so special about this place before we even think of leaving. We don't want to waste the higher-ups time if this turns out to be a dud, you got that soldiers!"
"We do, sir!" Everyone there replied.

The Werewolf Cheerleader
Being a cheerleader is easier than being a werewolf. Jessica Tumbleleague is a typical teenage girl who loves being a cheerleader at Moondale High. But after an encounter with a werewolf in the woods, Jessica discovers a frightening world she never thought is real. Dangerous magic, deadly fierce spirits, and other malevolent creatures. Now Jessica must fight the forces of darkness to protect her hometown while balancing her supernatural life with her high school life. But can she control the beast within herself? Note: This is a rewrite of the original with the same name. I decided to change the third-person style to first-person because I liked Jessica's voice better. She is funny and very strong. With the story only focusing on her, I can keep the mystery suspenseful and the reader can experience what Jessica is experiencing. It is a typical YA style, but it is fun to write as your main character. There are changes, but the first and second books will be similar to the third-person chapters. Let me know what you think and I hope you will enjoy this new version of the Werewolf Cheerleader. I will post the chapters every Friday in the afternoon. P.S, there is a Werewolf Cheerleader short story published in the Tales of Dungeons, All Hallows book. Titled The Werewolf Cheerleader: Castle and Ghouls. The short is also in first-person, which made me decide to change the book series into first-person. The link is below if you want to check it out. https://www.royalroad.com/amazon/B08MCS82R5

Decompose!
Dear diary. When you read stories about some people missing and returning after years of absence claiming they were living in another world, your first reaction is to scoff and dismiss a story as a tall tale, right? I know I did. All the time. Until it happened to me and I no longer did. That day was today. Some god of thunder smote me. If it were Chris Hemsworth, I wouldn't mind but it was some barbaric Hitite god that abaondned Earth some four millennia ago. Yes, what can I say? I love the seventh art. I have more hours watching movies than any other activity, including sleep. What? Do you think I'm exaggerating? Maybe I am. I'll really miss hollywood the most. And my biggest regret is that I never got to visit the holy city of cinema. I did not come to another world to be a hero even though there was hints that they hoped I'd save it. I did not come with overpowered abilities able to, dunno, leap tall castles in a single bound, faster than a speeding crossbow bolt, be more powerful than a eight-horse carriage, the bounds. No. After the asshole god that murdered me brought me to his world, he gave me some boons from his discount bin and "The Power of my Soul (tm)". Forgive my french, I hope you understand I am rather upset at dying. And he somehow decided that my power is to recycle stuff. How awesome is that? Not much at first, I must admit. At least I got all my camping stuff and equipment with me. There's no lycra in the other world. I'll make it someday, but that day is not today. So here I am. In another world, in the middle of nowhere. I'm no heroine. As the song goes, I'm your basic average girl. And I'm assumed to be here to save the world. But almost everything can stop me, because I'm not named Kim. Wish me luck, diary. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ This novel is going have the following features: slow-paced slice-of-life No GameLit / LitRPG elements. Movie references. Sandra likes the seventh art. Journal / diary style crafting (includes chemistry, engineering and metallurgy) low magic technological advancement (for Sandra, at least. She is not against sharing though) personal relations clash of perception between the modern and ancient customs. bits of tension, fighting, and plot here and there. I won't repeat myself though. Once she crafts a good batch of soap, for example, she'll just note, "I crafted soap again." Once it is estabilished how she obtains compound X, compound X2 that is obtainable from the same process will also just be mentioned. I'll try to be as realistic as I can with the crafting, chemistry, and technology. Cover: Public Domain Image by StockSnap from Pixabay. No attribution required but we do it anyway.
