《Bottomless earth》chapter 3

“Here's the book it’s pretty big”
She started trying to measure the book with her hand. Looking at the book it was around five inches thick and the cover seemed to be some sort of black leather with a few weird letters I haven't seen before.
“Hey lucy what's with the strange letters?”
Running my fingertips over the top of the letters they felt warm as if it was just burned into the leather recently. Man, I never thought the detail in games could be this good.
This feels way too real.
“Ah those are runes you say those as your thinking about your spell you want to cast the language can be a little finicky though. I was never very good at these”
Looking at me she smiled Embarrassingly
‘’This is how all the people in the village learned or if they knew something before they got here we would ask them to write it here so we have many variations from old to new.” Walking the cover of the book with her fingers as she spoke.
“Would it be alright if i have a look?”
“Ah yes go ahead.”
She turned the book around and I started flipping through the pages.
Each page had different amounts of runes written on them. I didn't understand a thing about it but I kept looking. You can tell that keep spells were written by a different person each time. Every spell had a signature of someone's name at the bottom and the name of the spell.
“Is there any way I can learn to read the runes?”
“Yes there are a few ways you can buy a book from us and it will teach you how to read and speak runes by yourself or you can take classes by a teacher...

"But he won't be back in town for a few days he left to find help after the raid…”
she started looking down at the floor again.
“Well I hope he comes back soon. Sorry to bother you so much but do you know where i can sell herbs from the woods?”
“Ah i can take them right here and give you the proper amount.”
Taking out all of the small plants and mushrooms I have collected from the forest. I didn't get the chance to use the [Inspection] skill on them but all pick up more later.
After Lucy seperated and counted the herbs she pulled out a small bag with a few coins in it and handed it to me.
“That's 2 silver and 4 copper coins. Thank you for selling them to us. Will there be anything else I can help you with?”
“Just one more thing can you sell me the book on runes? Im interested in learning”
“Here you go. That would be 2 copper coins”
As she reached under the tables and pulled out a book it wasn't too big. I'm really not for reading but if i want to use magic i have to do this. After buying the book i stored it in my inventory And started my trek back to my camp. I hope nothings been destroyed.
Maybe I should walk a little bit faster…
Coming to the camp nothing seemed to be off. Opening the door the tent was to dark to see anything i closed the door of the cabin and lit a fire in the firepit out front. Grabbing a stick nearby and wrapping it in moss from the trees I created a small torch i opened the door to the tent and looked in nothing seemed wrong.

“BOO!”
Stumbling back and dropping the torch hitting the floor it quickly extinguished.
I fell over onto the floor of my tent looking at the door.
There was a small creature in the door. I couldn't make out what it was but it was getting closer so I pulled out my axe.
Suddenly a light lit up the room.
“Man you really gotta figure out your lights.”
Looking back at the door the same small raccoon in the white suit that greeted me before was standing at the door.
“Man Tusk you really scared me.”
Sitting up on the floor and crossing my legs to get more comfortable.
“Haha, how have you been? I just came to check on you.”
“I'm settling in quite nicely. I love the game systems so far. And the people in the village seem so real. But I was wondering why I haven't seen any other players yet?”
“Ah well you see about that… haha. Well you see no one wanted to start in the wasteland so I believe you are the only player that's spawned here so far. The others seem to choose the other kingdoms.
They must think this is just a place full of monsters.”
As a blue screen pops in front of my head. He points his finger at the clusters of red dots on the screen.
“This is where the closest players are. It's a town called [Caskelume]. It's just passed the border of the waste land in the elven kingdom.”
“Damn that's far. Hm guess I better get suited for the journey.”
Man, I'm really gonna have to find a way to travel faster.
“Well I just wanted to check on you on your first day, Have a good night”
A large puff of smoke appeared and he was gone. Man it must be getting late. I should log off for the night man. This is fun.
Logging out...
Taking my headset off I was in my room. Back in my lackluster of a life. I should look at the forms of BE before I go to bed. Clicking through the forms there doesn't seem to be anyone that talks about the wasteland as their country.
Looking at peoples posts there seems to be special privileges when choosing a country for example dwarves seem to spawn with high strength stat and skills for crafting while elves have better senses and are good with earth magic and spirits. There doesn't seem to be any information on the waste land besides its home to many monsters of high level even though I haven't seen one monster yet.
I also haven't even started my first quest man i really have a lot to do tomorrow.
*Knock Kncok
“Yes come in”
Clara, My 15 year old sister, walks into the room in a huff. She's dragging a large blanket behind her.
“Whats up clara”
Clara looks very upset for some reason.
“You were supposed to say goodnight to me 10 mins ago!”
Clara sits on the floor the blanket coiling around her legs and glares while barely keeping her head up.
“Oh right I'm sorry here lets get you off to bed.”
I stand up from my desk and walk over to her and hug her and say goodnight. As I shut the door behind her I turned off the light to my room and lay in bed and star at the ceiling. I hope morning comes soon rolling over in bed.
I soon fell asleep.

Forced Development (What does it truly mean to live a fulfilling life?)
To get things started I would like to admit that this story does not bring much new to the table when it comes to the over-saturated Litrpg genre in terms of things like mechanics and power systems. Then what exactly am I trying to bring to the table with this work? A nice slow-paced novel about people maturing and growing older think of it as the re: zero or jobless reincarnation of Litrpgs. A story that tries to take into consideration how a worldwide system would affect the economics and culture of a world. A story that is much more character-focused than the typical heavy progression-focused novels this genre is known for. The RPG system, like any good power system, is there to actually explore the themes of the story and not just as a plot device for characters to get stronger. This is a story where we will see the growth of the Mc from being a baby to when he dies of old age. With plenty of heart-racing actions and intriguing plot developments along the way. Exploring themes like; What does it mean to improve at something and what does it mean to mature as a person? How does magic, the constant threat of monsters and people so much stronger than the average joe that they can destroy countries affect one's culture both on the micro and the macro scale? How people are affected by the culture in general? Generational trauma Nature vs Nurture Talent vs hard work What is morality, society, and people's opinions on both? What does it mean to be human and what does it mean to be alive in the context of a world with multiple sapient species vastly different from one another in basic biology? All these questions are going to be explored from multiple angles using the system as a catalyst for those discussions. So if any of does questions sound interesting to you what are you waiting for, I'm sure you are going to love this story. PS - Chapter come out every Friday at about the same time.
