《Meta Human》Chapter 13: Mind Reading

"Hurry up Alex. Time for breakfast." Jessy said passing by Alex's room with a laundry basket.
Alex, who was revising for the exam, closed his book and replied, "Okay. Mom."
He went downstairs and waited for his breakfast with his dad reading the newspapers.
"Uhhh... Alex." said Henry crossing one leg on top of the other, "Pex Corp is launching the bracelet you have next week."
He looked past the newspaper to Alex across the dining table and pointed at an article with the Circrate bracelet; "Where did you get that from?" he said seriously.
Alex took some time to reply, looking for a reasonable excuse to tell his dad.
"Uh... My friend... Yeah, my friend's dad works at Pex Corp and he got two of them for her. She gave me one."
"Oh... And what's your friend's name?" asked Henry seriously looking into his son's eyes.
" Abigail. "
" You mean Abigail Freeman. Her dad doesn't work at Pex Corp. I know him. "
Alex was panicked a little but didn't show it.
" Oh no no... It's another Abigail. "he said forcing a smile on his face.
Henry simply nodded and continued reading his newspaper; " Mmm"
"I'll go help mom with serving breakfast."
Alex said standing up from his seat and headed to the kitchen.
Alex and Ruff entered through the wall in the alley again.
"Ruff, Alex." Tammie passed by Ruff and Alex nodding at them.
It looked like she was in a hurry judging by the serious look on her face.
Alex and Ruff proceeded to the control room where they found Alvin who was violently typing on the keyboard.
Alex could see Tammie on the other side of the glass pane, fixing some sparking wires.

"Aghh."Alvin sighed in frustration throwing his head back.
" What's it?" asked Ruff.
" It failed again. There's something we're missing. "
" Well, we don't have the time. We have to stop Hudson from opening that portal. "
" I know I know. But anyway... I see you brought Alex. "Alvin looks at Alex and smiles at him gently.
" Yep. Let's test his limits. "Ruff sat down on a chair beside him.
" Oh okay let's get right to that. "
" It's just so annoying," said Tammie, who had just stepped into the room in frustration.
" Oh hi Alex. " she greeted.
" Alright... Follow me Alex" said Alvin.
Alvin led the way through a corridor to a medium-sized room with nothing in it but a table and two chairs opposite each other.
The white light on the roof and the white paddings on the flow and walls gave Alex a safe feeling.
Alex sat on one chair and Alvin sat opposite him.
"Ahh... So..." Alvin leaned both his hands on the table; "Let's start with some basics.
" What am I thinking?"
Alex also leaned in and stared into Alvin's eyes but couldn't activate his mind-reading.
" What's the matter? Have you heard anything yet?"
Alex shook his head;" No. "
" Alright... Try this out. Close your eyes. And try to listen to what's around you. "
Alex did as Alvin said.
"Good. There are brain waves in our brains. I'd you're a telepath, you can be able to hear them and over time, control them. But it'll take some time."
Alvin fell back in the chair; "What do you hear?"
A frown settled on Alex's face; "nothing."
"Keep your eyes closed. And clear all the distractive thoughts."

After half a minute Alex finally heard something; "Have you heard anything yet?"
This time Alvin didn't say it loud but in his thoughts.
A smile formed on Alex's lips in satisfaction.
"Yes, I heard your thoughts. I heard them." Alex shot open his eyes in excitement.
"Good. Now try it with your eyes open."
After half an hour, they both came out of the white room and joined Ruff and Tammie in the control room.
Ruff was pinching the skin between his brows while leaning on a wall and Tammie had her arms crossed over her chest looking down on the floor.
" What happened? Did you two fight again?" asked a confused Alvin.
"No. No, it's nothing," said Ruff quickly putting in a smile.
"Alright then. How did it go?"
"Well, so far so good."
Ruff picked up the jacket on the chair he was sitting on earlier; "That's great...Alex let's head home now."
Alex who had just opened the door to his house caught sight of a third figure seated with his parents on the couch.
The TV was loud and no one heard Alex enter the house.
"Hello, mom, dad. Welcome back, David." Alex greeted as he proceeded to his room.
They turned their attention to Alex who had just greeted them.
"Hey, Alex your back." Jessy got up from her seat and went to hug Alex.
"Alex... You've grown up so much." David stood up and went to Alex.
He towered over Alex like the big brother he was.
His black hair fell over his brown eyes as he looked down at Alex.
"Come give your big bro a hug," he said spreading his arms wide.
Alex felt a little awkward but did it anyway.
But he made sure to make it quick.
"Alright I'll head to my room now," said Alex.
Jessy nodded; "Lunch will be ready in a few." she reminded.
Alex proceeded to his room and fell in his bed with a sigh.
A notification came in on Alex's bracelet; "Hi Alex, can we meet up and study at my place."
Abigail had sent a message.
"Alright. I'll be there at three," he replied.
Alex had his lunch quietly as his parents chatted with David.
He took his plate to the kitchen and headed out afterward to meet up with Abigail.
"Alex." Abigail waved to Alex who had just entered Central Park.
Alex caught sight of Abigail seated on a bench and walked up to her.
"Hello," he said calmly.
"Your right on time. Let's go to my place."
"Alright."
A frown settled on Alex's face when he realized something.
Abigail, who was about to open the door asked, "What is it?"
Alex touched his waist and sighed; "I forgot... Your sister hates me."
Abigail was bemused at how innocent Alex looked right now that she couldn't help laughing.
"What? Why are you laughing? You think this is funny?" said a serious Alex.
"No no, it's nothing..." Abigail laughed again, "I never knew you are scared of girls."
"Don't be afraid of her. That Is just how she is at school but she's sweet," she said reassuring Alex.
"If only she knew." he thought to himself as he pinched the skin between his brows.
"Alright let's go in." he finally gave in.

A Fate Set in Stone (On Hold)
After dying and making his way into the afterlife, our protagonist happens to have a stroke of good luck. With the help of the substitute god of death, he's given a second shot at life in a world run by gods who probably played too many video games as kids. Monsters, magic, dungeons, bandits, and all that good stuff is there, except it turns out to be much different than Jed initially expected.(I picked some generic tags since this is my first story and I am not 100% sure where it is going to go. Mature warning is only there for some less-than-polite language.)
