《You Saw Right Through Me》Investigation

"Y/N, could you please explain this mastermind you speak of?" Kirumi asked. I explained to them everything, with Kaede and Shuichi backing up everything I said. "So you tricked me into making those cameras for you?" Miu asked. I nodded. "But why would he keep something so important a secret from us?" I looked at Kaito.
"Well, once we knew there was a mastermind, we'd start fighting, would we not?" A flash of guilt came across everyone's faces.
"We should check the photos then! The case will be solved! But that's so boring!" Kokichi seemed like he was contradicting himself in that statement...
Shuichi went to get the cameras. "We just need to develop the photos." Kirumi offered to do it, but the pink Monokub came and said that she would. "She said she would follow the rules, so let's hope that she doesn't destroy the evidence." K1-B0 hoped.
I looked at Kaede. "Are you okay?" She chuckled. "I thought this would all be over if we exposed the mastermind... but it just led to a bigger mess." It will be... but she's given up so easily... why? "That's not like her." I mumbled. "Everyone go into groups! Nobody is allowed to investigate alone, otherwise they may destroy evidence."
Kaito raised his hand. "I have a suggestion." He pointed to me and Shuichi. "You two are both the smartest and one of the most trustworthy, you will investigate the body. The rest of us will look for other evidence." Me and Shuichi looked at Kaede, then nodded.
Ryoma looked up at the bookcase where the security sensor should be. "So it's up there right? The security sensor." Shuichi nodded. "I'll go up and get it." He went up and came back down with the security sensor. "It didn't go off?" Ryoma questioned. "Oh, no we have the ability to turn it off." I held up the receiver.
He nodded and looked through the bookshelves. I heard a noise coming from above and saw a drone. "Oh, Miu, did you make that?" I marveled as Miu fiddled with the controller in her hands. "Yeah, it can help us find evidence with that aerial camera it has!" She brought it in front of me. "Wow! Amazing Miu!" She smiled a bit and brought it back into the air.
I looked at Tsumugi, who didn't really seem to be investigating. Odd.
I thought to myself. The whole reason there was a time limit in the first place was so someone would take advantage of the First Blood Perk. But "when it came time to step up, they didn't. They could have graduated."
"Exactly my thoughts, Y/N." Oh, I had been talking out loud. "Yeah... even if the person killed simply to protect us, don't you think they would still take advantage of the perk?" I looked at the bookcase leading to the black and white door. "Unless... they just killed to have the game continue?" Kirumi looked at me. "I mean, think about it. When we came in, the bookcase was closing, meaning the mastermind had been here." I chuckled. "Of course, it's just a theory."
Kirumi smiled. "You seem to be very experienced in this topic, Y/N." I explained that I was supposed to be the Ultimate Analyst but because of my people skills, it was changed to Ultimate Psychologist. "I have actually worked in the investigating department before. Even psychologists work on cases at times."

I looked to my left and saw Shuichi and Kaede talking to Ryoma. As they did that, I walked up to the moving bookcase and opened it. "Hm... I wonder how it closed." I said as I examined the card insert. It hadn't been used, seeing as the dust was still there. Strange. I let go of the bookcase and it closed. "Ah, so it's self closing."
I looked at Rantaro. "No way he opened the bookcase and walked all the way over there. Human peripheral vision shows that he wouldn't be able to see over there, or at least notice anything odd. Besides, why would he walk away from a hidden door?"
I remembered the music that played before the murder. "Music heavily impacts a human's brain..." I said to myself. "So... it could have not... been the mastermind." I groaned and leaned on the bookcase. None of this adds up.
I crouched down next to Rantaro's body and picked up the shot put ball. "Heavy... none of the smaller ones could've done this." Kokichi, Himiko, you're safe. Ryoma.... not really. I tilted Rantaro's head and saw the wound at the back. "So the Monopad was right." Shuichi said, referring to what the Monopad said in the case file.
When I put my hand down, I felt a liquid and looked down. My hand landed on Rantaro's. I held it and looked around. There was also blood on the camera. "You think he was reaching for this?" I asked Shuichi and held up the blood camera. "I think so." He smiled. "You're pretty good at this. Have you done this before?" I nodded. "I helped out with a murder case because I was almost called the Ultimate Analyst." I said, sheepishly. I kind of wish it hadn't changed, to be honest.
I turned to Kaede, who was crossing her arms and looking away from the body. "Kaede, you don't need to investigate the body if you don't want to. You can investigate somewhere else." She waved her arms in front of her. "I-I'm fine, don't worry!"
I nodded and turned Rantaro's body so he was on his back. "Wait a moment." I put my hand on Rantaro's chest. "Don't you think it's a little too late to check if his heart is beating?" Kaede asked. I shook my head. "That's not what I'm checking... wasn't he wearing a necklace?" Shuichi nodded. "Where'd it go?"
Shuichi checked Rantaro's pockets. "All that's in his pockets are his dorm keys and Monopad, just like everyone else." Kaede looked at Rantaro's body. "So... he wasn't the mastermind?" She asked with a look of guilt on her face, seeing as there was no keycard for the door. "No, but don't worry. We all suspected it at one time!" I assured. "He was the only one in the room when we saw the bookcase close."
"I wonder why Rantaro came here in the first place." I muttered to myself. I tried thinking of past conversations with him. Then I remembered the dining hall. "I'm going to end this game." He had said.
"Maybe he found the secret door, too?" I told Shuichi. "What would make you think that?" I told him about what Rantaro said about the dining hall. "So he may have already found this and thought that the mastermind would come." I sighed. "I guess that didn't go too well for him, though." I rubbed my thumb across Rantaro's hand.

"Y/N!" I heard. I looked up and saw Kaito and Maki. "Why was Rantaro's pendant in your room?" I was given the pendant to examine. "Monokuma told us to examine all the rooms."
"No blood so it wasn't placed there after he was murdered." I pointed out the blood dripping down his neck. "Maybe it was when he came to my room. He wanted me to come with him so it wouldn't look suspicious." I clutched the necklace in my hand. "What if I said no..." I asked myself. "Would he still be alive...?" Kaito put his hand on my shoulder. "He probably would've gone anyway. Stop blaming everything on yourself!"
"Well, if Rantaro did find the bookcase before us, or while we were investigating, he probably didn't tell anyone because he was suspicious of everyone," Shuichi turned to me. "Except for Y/N." I sighed and put Rantaro's necklace in my pocket. "I don't know what it was about me that he trusted." I smiled. "But I'm glad that he did."
I looked up at the books Kaede organized. "None of them seem to be out of place, so unless someone went through the vent without us noticing and happened to be smart enough to place the books back to how they were originally, the vent's out of the question. Besides, he would know if someone came from the vents and jumped to the floor to throw a shot put ball at him. And it didn't land on top of his head either."
"Wow, Y/N. You're a better detective than me." Shuichi admitted. I playfully punched his arm. "Don't say that! You're the one who found the bookcase, thought of a plan to catch the mastermind, and helped with the investigation! Don't put yourself down." I continued looking at Rantaro's body while Shuichi and Kaede looked around once more.
While I continued to examine Rantaro's body, Shuichi and Kaede looked at possible ways Rantaro and the culprit could've entered. "Although, any of these could be possible, but without the cameras, there's no proof." Shuichi reminded me. I walked over. "We've searched the entire library, I think we should start questioning." They both nodded and we went to the game room. We found Maki there.
"Hey, Maki. Can we ask you a few questions?" She nodded. "So what exactly were you doing down here?" Shuichi asked. "Kaito wanted to hold a strategy meeting downstairs, so he gathered the people he thought could fight." I tilted my head.
"Angie and Himiko don't look like... the fighting type. And wouldn't K1-B0 be a better option?" Maki nodded. "He thought Himiko's magic and Angie's connection to Atua would help." Hm, makes sense.... I think. "And let me guess, he took a look at you and thought you probably knew how to fight." Maki nodded.
"And why did Rantaro leave?" Kaede asked. "He went to go to the washroom, but when he was taking too long, Tenko and Kaito went to look for him." I guess that's when they bumped into us. "And where were you guys at the time?" Shuichi asked.
"We were waiting in the gaming room. Well, Gonta was in the A/V room. They're in there now."
We went into the A/V room and found Himiko and Kaito questioning Gonta. "Gonta is not killer!" He claimed. I put my hand on his arm to calm him down. "We know Gonta, but we need to know your perspective of this. Why were you in the A/V room?" Gonta sighed. "Well, Gonta glad to be invited to meeting, but Gonta think he useless because he not smart. So Gonta come in here and watch bug movie!" I asked why. "It help Gonta fight! Movie will help Gonta fight Monokuma!" Ah, he wanted to protect everyone.
"Why was the door locked?" Shuichi asked. "Gonta need to focus, if Gonta no focus, Gonta no can fill up with fight. But no one believe Gonta cuz Gonta just big and scary!" Everyone stepped back, but I smiled. "No Gonta, we know. We just need to know where everyone was so we can figure out who killed Rantaro. We believe you." Gonta's tensed muscles relaxed as we began investigating the room.
I looked through the movie to find the bug movie. "Oh found i- OH MY GOSH!" Shuichi looked at me. "What is it?" I pulled Shuichi's hat over his eyes. "Not something you wanna see, detective!" I looked up and saw the projector. "Kaito, can you give me a boost?" I got on Kaito's shoulders and felt the projector. It wasn't really hot, but it was warm enough to indicate that it was in use in the past hour.
I looked to Shuichi, who was examining the other door of the A/V room and nodded, while he shook his head. The other door didn't work and it seems like the projector was used recently: Gonta was innocent. No matter how many times Himiko said he wasn't.
We interrogated Tenko, but she gave the same information as Maki, meaning that the statement must be true. Maki isn't very expressive, so it's hard to see whether or not she's lying. Then, we found Kokichi. "Kokichi, come one! You're not making this any easier!" I complained as we tried to interrogate him. Everything he said, from the claim that he killed Rantaro, and the fact that this is a game, was a lie. He kept doing that weird side glance that he does when he lies.
"Kaede, Shuichi, Kokichi innocent." I walked away, looking back at Kokichi.
We went back to the classroom where Shuichi and Kaede were hiding out. "Hey K1-B0! Hey Kiyo!" I said as I walked in. K1-B0 asked us basic questions since it's kind of useless to ask a robot questions. I don't think it's in his coding to think of a lie. I went to talk to Kiyo.
"So what were you doing at the time of the murder?" I asked. "I was eating supper in the dining hall with Tsumugi, Miu, Kirumi, and Angie." I looked at the zippered mask over his mouth.
"And... what would the name of the supper be?" He thought for a moment. "It was something along the lines of 'Pasta that tastes like a lonely lady eating her grandkid's birthday cake'." To be honest, it sounds like something Monokuma would do. But it's also not something people would lie about.
"And were they with you the whole time? What would they do if they were?" Kiyo thought once more. "Miu was tinkering with something," I assume it was the drone. "And Tsumugi left to use the washroom for a little bit." A common excuse to leave the room. I walk over to Shuichi and Kaede. "Anything on K1-B0?" I ask. "Well he was alone in his room, and Ryoma was as well."
"Tsumugi, who was with Kiyo, left to go to the washroom at some point. She's the Ultimate Cosplayer, so she could've looked like anyone." We went back to the basement to interrogate Tsumugi.
I went to question Ryoma while Kaede and Shuichi questioned Tsumugi. He didn't really have much to say.
I walked over to Shuichi and Kaede was dragged away by Tsumugi. "What happened?" I asked. "Tsumugi is trying to prove that she can't cosplay as real people." After a few minutes, Tsumugi and Kaede returned, Kaede having the most horrified look on her face.
We got an announcement saying the photos were ready so we all went to the warehouse. We looked at the rear entrance and front entrance photos, neither showing the culprit. When we looked at the camera facing the secret door, however. "Wait, look at the way the picture is lit, and the shadows in the back!" I said, pointing at the picture. "I think the flash was still on for this camera." I thought for a moment. "He was found near the camera... so he probably saw the flash!" The next photo was Rantaro reaching for the camera.
I looked at my blood-stained hand from investigating the body. "He was hit in the back of the head..." I began as everyone listened. "And from the fact that the camera, the back of his hand and the wall was covered in blood, I'm assuming the blood splattered from his head." Shuichi nodded. "Good observation, Y/N. I also noticed something about the camera. The sensor was off." So Rantaro clearly noticed the camera, but while his back was turned, he was struck in the back of the head with a shot put ball.
"Although," I began. "I don't think the Monokubs didn't tamper with the evidence, unless the mastermind did manage to go through the vents somehow." I took all the developed photos and held them up. "None of these seem to have the mastermind in them. And I think it is impossible that the cameras captured Shuichi taking them down and Rantaro reaching for them, but not the mastermind killing Rantaro and making a run for it." Shuichi agreed.
"The bookcase has a limited amount of time it would be opened, and in the photo where Rantaro is reaching for the camera, the bookcase was still opened." I laid the photos out in order of when I think each was taken. "If the front door camera and rear door camera detected us coming in and Shuichi taking them down, then it's not like the camera happened to die when the culprit came in and out."
I looked around the warehouse and inside the box I found Kaede in front of before. I lifted one up. Same heaviness, same size... it's the same as the murder weapon. I looked at Kaede and Tsumugi. Both of them are the only ones who knew we were in the warehouse, but Tsumugi doesn't know about the shot put balls... does she?
DING DONG BING BONG
"Alright class, it's time for the long awaited Class Trial!" I bit my lip. "Don't worry, Y/N! We've got all the information we need." Shuichi assured me. We went to the Shrine of Judgement as Monokuma said and went into the red door surrounded by plants. "Alright... let's do this." I whispered.

8 121Paths of the Chosen (Rewritten, Revised, and Reinvigorated)
Daniel Stewart was chosen to alpha test a brand new Immersive VR game, "The Realms". What he doesn't know is that he has also been Chosen by one of the Powers of a far-off world, and is now a pawn in a game much bigger than any he thought he would ever participate in. Will he survive and thrive in this strange new world, or will he stumble and fall, shattered by the ambitions of another? Does he have what it takes to walk the Paths of the Chosen?---Inspired by the Chaos Seeds novels, TheDespaxas's The Gamer, and a wide variety of games and books, although the world, characters, and systems are my own. Expect high fantasy, magic, combat and intrigue, love and loss, grief and passion. This story is intended for adult audiences and contains explicit sexual content, profanity, and violence (including sexual violence, although not by the protagonist and not as a focus of the story). Chapters with such content will be clearly marked, and all explicit sexual content will be behind spoiler tags. I prefer my stories to have happy endings, and especially in these uncertain times, I feel that it is important to maintain hope. While this tale will reach some dark places, I promise to you that, when all is said and done, the villains will be justly punished and the heroes will prevail and prosper. Remember: it is darkest before dawn, but dawn always comes. Please note also that although this story does not have the [Harem] tag, it does have an extremely slow build into a polyamorous relationship. Additionally, starting with Champion (book two of the series), the [Multiple Lead Characters], [Female Lead], and [Non-Human Lead] tags would also apply to varying degrees. This is a complete, ground-up rewrite of the original Paths of the Chosen, following feedback from here and elsewhere. It is now written in the third-person limited omniscient perspective and in the past tense. In addition, while the major plot beats are unchanged, most of what comes between them has been reconsidered and rewritten, with pacing and characterization as a special focus.---Update schedule: 2 chapters per week (Monday and Thursday), not counting bonus chapters. Chapter length is roughly 2,500 words on average, +/- 1,000 words. Chapters with explicit content tend to be longer so that they are still worth reading for those who would prefer a fade to black. --- Cover art by Agri Karuniawan (@artofagri).
