《Iridescent (E. Cullen)》Chapter Eleven

Zenaida's been in Forks for a month now. Though she is only just finishing unpacking her boxes. Not through a desire not to do it, but because she never really got around to doing it. Between school, homework, Bella and Charlie, she just had other things to do, more interesting things to do. She steps down of her bed and turns to look back at the tapestry she's just hung on the wall, just one of some wildflowers. She'd actually found the tapestry a few weekends back when she and Bella went into town for lunch. A little part of her life here now. She grabs the ring binder folder from her desk and sits on the end of her bed to go through it. She wants to make sure she has her homework all set for the week. This is not something she missed about this place. Whilst Frigga had her practising spells and her shapeshifting she never had to sit down and write an essay about some out-of-date constitution or the make-up of a plant cell. It's far less gratifying. It's not like they teach her how to make flowers or fireworks or how to look like Pamela Anderson. They had physical outcomes that she could see and touch. It is more gratifying that way. Pieces of paper and grades mean nothing to her. She pauses on a page of notes from her Spanish notes and scoffs. There are little green ink notes on the side, doodles really. Emmett's notes. He has made it a habit to doodle things on her work, or their shared work as they are often paired together being seated together in most of their shared classes. He's not as invasive as his siblings came across. Whilst conversation has shifted into personal matters at times, he always seems to know just how far he can push before she gets annoyed with him. He's pressing for information but she doesn't feel it. Not in the same way she felt it with his brother and sister. She is still unsure about him and his motives though. She still has to keep her shield up just in case his brother gets any ideas. But there is definitely something about Emmett that keeps drawing her in.

"That looks great" Bella offers from the doorway. Zenaida looks at her and nods.

"Thanks," Zenaida tells her as she lets out a breath. "Sorry it took so long"

"It takes a while to get comfortable" Bella counters. "And...you've moved a lot"

"Charlie raised me" Zenaida stops her. "He made me who I am, this is always going to be my home...that's not what the delay was about...I had this room, before I left, and I had it the way I wanted then, I grew up in this room, added and took things and left my mark......changing it now" She lets out a breath. "Changing it meant that Norway changed me" Bella looks at her softly. That she can understand. "That Loki changed me"

"Maybe they did" Bella argues, Zenaida lets out a breath and nods. She knows that it did. She knows that Asgard, and Frigga, and Thor, and everyone else she came into contact with, changed her and who she is. She knows they did. But Charlie is her source, no matter what. He is her foundation. She feels that changing this room means erasing his influence on her. Those flowers on that tapestry comes from months of studying potions with Frigga who did, to her credit, include Earth ingredients that Zenaida could substitute, many of which are wildflowers. When she'd seen it, she'd just seen a bridge between the two worlds, but it is not enough to erase that fear from her. She's scared she's losing Charlie's influence on her. "Zen, you'll always be Charlie's little girl" Bella assures her. "That doesn't just go away...he's hard-wired into your entire being....the way you are with me and Jess and Angela and those puzzles you do...." Zenaida looks at her softly. She knows what it means. How much it means that Bella, Charlie's actual daughter, still pushes that Zenaida is Charlie's 'little girl'. She did worry that something more jealous would happen here, that Bella would feel pushed out because of Zenaida, but it never came. Bella knows that whilst she had Renee and Charlie, Zenaida only had Charlie. There was no one else for her. Bella is proud of her father who saw a little girl in need and decided to add her to the family, all by himself. He saw a little girl in need and thought to help her. For a guy that finds it hard to show affection, that was a pretty strong move. And Bella knows that Zenaida is a nice girl. He did something right. Something amazing, how can Bella hate that or the product of that? And she's come to love her sister in the last month. Zenaida is actually pretty amazing herself. "Charlie is your dad....always will be" Zenaida hugs Bella tightly and closes her eyes

"And you are my sister" Zenaida counters. "Always will be" Bella chuckles a little and hugs her back.

"Good thing I always wanted a sister" She teases slightly and pinches Zenaida's side. Bella has always wanted siblings, she wanted someone to share her experiences, and whilst she didn't get that, she did get an amazingly intelligent and compassionate sister. Which is just as good, if not better.

Emmett is always restless on a morning. Between the sun rising and the Cullen children leaving for school, he gets very restless, pacing the length of the open living room-kitchen. He has paced so much that he has almost worn a hole into the carpet, something that Esme, his mother, has already considered replacing. He drops onto the couch and spreads out, head thrown back, limbs akimbo. He sighs and rests his chin in his hand as he stares out of the window and into the trees beyond. Rosalie rolls her eyes a little behind him. He's been this way since Zenaida arrives in town. All lovesick. Pining. Unable to sit still for longer than a few minutes. Annoying.

"It's Monday" Rosalie points out and Emmett seems to perk up. Sitting up in his seat Weekends are worse for him. He goes two whole days without seeing or speaking to Zenaida, and unlike their brother, he does not want to lower himself to stalking the stone-cold fox. She would likely know he was doing it for starters. But Monday means that he gets to go to school, and now he has a reason to enjoy it. He gets to stare at the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. He wishes he could cry, just so he could cry over just how pretty she is. An angel.

...........

Trigonometry means that Emmett has to settle for sitting behind Zenaida, despite how often he has asked Edward to swap seats with him, Edward is still hoping that Zenaida is going to talk to him about their shared mind reading, but that has yet to happen, in fact, unless she has to, she seems to rather not talk with him at all. He understands that is likely because of the way he is with her sister, who she clearly loves dearly. She and Bella are extremely close for sisters that never spent any significant time together, for sisters that aren't really sisters. Emmett leans on the desk next to where Zenaida will be sitting, she has yet to turn up for class, but Edward, Alice and Emmett are all here already, with Alice and Edward in their seats. Emmett lets his eyes scan around the classroom, ignoring everyone because his focus is on one person. He finds Zenaida the second she walks into the classroom. She hangs her jacket on the hook by the door before heading towards her desk, only pausing for a moment when she notices that Emmett is looming there before she lets out a breath and continues. She doesn't have a word to explain the way her body reacts to him. The way her heart beats faster, her palms get all sweaty, she gets all these knots in her stomach. Emmett smiles at her when she reaches the table.

"We were just talking about the girl's choice spring dance," He tells her, she hums a little and sets her bag down on the floor next to the seat as she takes it, turning her head to look at him. To stare at him. He's waiting for something. He's waiting for her to ask him. But she keeps quiet, raising an eyebrow at him in question. Alice smiles a little from her desk. She, and her siblings, have watched the two of them over the last month, whilst Rosalie and Edward are struggling with things, the rest of them see that Zenaida might actually make a good match for Emmett. She enjoys sports, she has a fondness for mechanics, she likes working with wood in carpentry, and she is patient with him, even when he asks her stupid questions. He's the only one of them that's managed to get her to open up to them. Even with simple things. And he's different now too. He's not just going through the motions of every day. Now he is the first ready for school, he is actively participating in class, and he actually seems to be trying to enjoy things. It's a good thing.

"No, we weren't" Edward argues, Emmett gives him a look but Edward smirks back at him. If he is struggling with one sibling, he is not about to make it easier for his brother in dealing with the sister.
