《Iridescent (E. Cullen)》Chapter Five

The morning sun comes in through the Swan's kitchen window, warming Zenaida's skin, even if there is a cold snap to the air outside. She lets out a breath as she stands in the kitchen, staring at the empty cabinets and fridge. She was going to make breakfast for Bella and Charlie. But that is pretty hard to do when there is no food in the house. She lets out a breath and then takes in a deep one.
"Okay," She whispers to herself and then holds up her hands. It's a big spell, but it is a simple one at the same time. Summoning food was something Frigga started on her on. Summoning an apple was the first spell she learned. But summoning an entire kitchen's worth of food is a lot of food. She can do that though. She curls her wrists, twisting her hands slightly. There is a wave of green magic that ripples across the cupboards and the fridge before it vanishes and in its place is food. Zenaida shakes her head as she stumbles back a little. Maybe she should have just started with breakfast. It's done now though.
.........
Charlie is the first of the two of them to make his way downstairs, likely woken by the smell of cooking. Zenaida wouldn't have gotten the same effect if she'd just magicked up a table of food. It is a side effect of magic. Some things are lost in the act. There is no smell of cooking with manifested food. She chews on a piece of bacon as she watches the coffee machine drip the last drops of coffee from the filter above when Charlie walks into the room behind her, a little cautious and surprised. He looks over the table of food, amazed, before he looks at his daughter.
"What is all of this?" Charlie asks her.

"I made breakfast" Zenaida answers with a small smile. He tilts his head a little in question and thought before he smiles softly.
"You didn't have to do this" He assures her as he takes a seat at the table, she shrugs.
"I wanted to" She counters as she picks up the coffee pot from the counter. "I couldn't sleep....and it was getting breakfast ready or going for a run, and it's freezing outside so..." She draws off with a smirk. He nods as she sets the pot on the table. He would have picked food over running too. He pours out the coffee and sniffs it before he shrugs and takes a cautionary drink from it. But it's good. She's done well with the coffee. It makes it a little more encouraging for the food. He doesn't know if she can cook. Bella yawns into the back of her hand as she shuffles into the room. Still half asleep but waking.
"Are you hungry?" Charlie asks Bella as she sits at the table with him. "Because your sister went crazy" He motions for Bella to 'please eat something', because he doesn't want it to go to waste and he doesn't want Zenaida to feel bad. He has no idea if she can cook. She'd never done it before she left.
"Wow, you did all this?" Bella muses as she pours out some coffee for herself. Zenaida hums as she sits with them. "And I burn soup"
"Don't get used to it" Zenaida warns teasingly. "It's exhausting and I only know how to make breakfast" Charlie smiles a little. For as little time as the girls have spent together, they are alike in many ways. Though Zenaida is the more outgoing of the two, the two of them are intelligent and stubborn, have little care for cooking, love reading and Charlie of course. Which makes Charlie think of one thing he wanted to talk to Zenaida about this morning. School.

"I don't know if you've thought about what you are going to do about school" Charlie starts, Zenaida nods as she pokes at her fruit bowl.
"Actually I had thought about it. If I am back, then I should go back to school, right?" Charlie nods in agreement.
"When you told me you were coming back..." He starts, only to look over his shoulder when someone knocks on the front door. "I talked to the school" He continues as he stands. "They're happy for you to return they just need your transcripts from Norway" Zenaida looks down at her breakfast. She hadn't considered that. She wonders if she can just magic herself some. "I'll get the door" Charlie leaves the room to answer the door. Bella raises an eyebrow at Zenaida.
"Zen, you hated school" Bella points out. "Why are you offering to go back....willingly?"
"Because you are a danger magnet" Zenaida teases. "And someone needs to keep you upright" Bella sticks out her tongue at Zenaida who smirks back at her. "Because college applications aren't going to look too good if I don't finish high school"
"You've never talked about college before" Bella points out softly. They've both talked about their future at times over the years. Bella wants to go to college. English. Zenaida never thought she wanted college. She wanted to travel. To do the backpack thing. She's not sure now though. But she'd rather have a backup plan under her belt if need be.
"Zen!" Charlie yells from the front of the house. Zenaida stands from her seat and heads through the house to join him and finds Loki. They stand on the other side of the door dressed as a delivery person. Her packed boxes at their feet. Zenaida gives them a look and they just smile back at her. "It's your boxes" Charlie offers and touches her back. "Do you want a hand?"
"No, it's okay, I can do it" She assures him. "Go finish your breakfast" Charlie hums a little and then walks away. She watches him go before she turns back to Loki. "What are you doing here?" She whispers as she moves to the open door.
"I wanted to make sure you got back okay" Loki offers as he holds out the clipboard in their hand. "He's fine, the delivery man, but you should sign this..." She smirks a little as she takes it from him to do just that. "So you went with a motorbike?" Loki asks her, she hums and nods. "How does Charlie feel about that?"
"He's not seen it yet" She admits as she hands back the clipboard. "He's probably going to freak out over it" She nods down the street. "Kids down there have dirt bikes and he flips but every summer over them...or he did....not sure anymore" She shrugs and lets out a breath. "I'm sorry it didn't work out" She whispers. "Me being in Asgard"
"It wasn't your fault" Loki stops her, touching her arm softly. "I'm just not cut out for doing the whole...parent thing" They admit and give her a sad smile. Loki nods at her and then backs away. Content that she's home safe. Zenaida lifts her hand and waves at her parent as they walk away from her. She has no idea when she'll see them again. If she ever will. This could very well be the last time they see one another. Zenaida shakes her head and begins bringing her boxes inside.

Solstice Anthology
A collection of short stories I've written over the past few years, the centerpiece being "Solstice" itself: On the Winter Solstice, the wind whispered. It roared and blew across the world, and reached even the Heavens above. With it, the great cold of winter flooded across that higher plane, and the gods staggered. They felt the golden dust of their divinity drift away from them, and the message of that wind became clear… This Winter will never end so that the Earth will.
