《Iridescent (E. Cullen)》Prologue

Asgard is paradise. Glittering golden halls that stretch up to the crystal blue skies above. But it's not enough for Zenaida Swan. It's not what she wants. When it was first offered to her. To move to Asgard. She thought it would be exciting. She thought it would be an adventure. To explore this mythological realm. She went to Asgard wanting to get to know her biological parent. To get to know Loki. She wanted to get to know who she is. What she is. She wanted to bond with her family. And whilst she did, with Frigga, her grandmother, she's barely spent any time with any of the others, Loki, Thor, Odin. She's been lonely. It's not been the adventure that she thought it was going to be. And she misses Charlie. The man that raised her. She puts it down to loneliness and boredom. That she can't settle in the palace halls. She stands on the balcony of her bedroom, watching the sun setting over Asgard. She's spent the entire day tucked up inside of her bedroom with a handful of books. There really isn't much else to do on Asgard for a girl like her, or a girl her age. She's not a warrior. She's not really that much of a scholar. She doesn't ride horses. She's not allowed down into the town alone. It doesn't really give her much else to do. She has an elaborate chamber to hang out in though, so it's not terrible. Carved snakes in almost everything. It marks her as Loki's daughter. She has done everything that she can think of. Everything that she has access to. The novelty of it all kind of wore off. It might be a paradise for them, but it's not for her. Turns out she enjoys the human things. The human parts of life. She enjoys going to school. She enjoys sitting and watching the football games on the television with Charlie. This golden glittering world is not for her. Her cell phone rings on the bedside table and Zenaida backs away from the balcony and into her chambers towards the phone. How Frigga kept her word she has no idea, but the cell phone was a must. The cover story was that her mother was Norwegian and as such, Zenaida would have to move to 'Norway' to spend time with her. Of course, it was really Asgard. But because Charlie believed in Norway, Zenaida had to be reachable by cell phone. She has no idea how it works, only that she is grateful that it does. She thinks it's magic. It has to be. She flips open the phone and sets it against her ear as she sits on the edge of her bed, shuffling back to get comfy.

"Hey, Dad" She greets softly, laying back against the pillows on her bed. It's soft. Like laying on a marshmallow.
"It's not too late for you, is it?" He asks, she hums a little and shakes her head, more to herself.
"No" She answers. "It's okay" She loves hearing from Charlie, because she got so used to him being around that when she moves to Asgard and he was suddenly gone, it was like a shock to her system. He doesn't call as often as he would like though, scared of getting in the way of her new life with her real family. He'll always be her real family to her though, even if he doesn't realise it.
"What did you do today?" He asks, she smiles to herself, trying to think of the best way to word it.
"Just...schoolwork" She answers, it's a lie, but it's not very far from a lie. Frigga has her reading all these magical lore and theoretical books. Which is like schoolwork. It's just not exactly the same thing. But it's not like she can tell him the truth. "How's Bella settling in?" She asks, but there is a silent pause from Charlie, that makes her worry a little. "Dad?" She pushes a little, narrowing her eyes a little. "What's that noise?" She asks with a little frown, hearing a speaker voice in the background. "Where are you?"
"At the hospital" He answers. "Your...Your sister" She sits up sharply, alarmed now. He should have started with that news. And perhaps he shouldn't sound so hurt too. Because the reaction from Zenaida is instant. She fears the worst. Those words. The pain in his voice.
"Dad" She starts, tears already threatening to spill from her eyes.
"No, no, Zen, honey, Bella's okay" He is quick to reassure her. "I just needed to check on you" His voice softens a little at the end. He heard the concern in her voice. It was something he feared for a long time. That she and Bella wouldn't get along. And whilst they have only ever seen one another once a year, they are rather close. Zenaida takes the concept of family seriously.

"Oh," She breaths and lets out a breath. "Okay...are you sure?"
"Yes, she's fine...." Charlie is firmer this time. "I'll have her call you in the morning herself...."
"Are you okay?" Zenaida counters as she stretches out her legs. He sounds tired and that makes her worry about him.
"Everything is different with her" He admits quietly. "You" He sighs. "You and her are so different...." He has no idea what he is doing with Bella. He raised a far more outgoing and confident young woman in Zenaida, even though he has no idea how he did it. It should have been easier with Bella because they themselves are so alike. But he's finding it harder to get any sort of foothold on a relationship with her. Zenaida was easy.
"It's only been, what? Ten days" She points out. "She's in a new-ish place, at a new school and away from her mom....maybe she's freaking out about this as much as you are"
"'M not freaking out" Charlie argues weakly, she hums a little. "Maybe a little bit..." He admits and then sighs. "You are right...time, that's all she needs...thank you, Zen.....I'm so glad one of us has their head on straight..."
"Dad, you are a police chief, if you don't have your head on straight, I pity the people of Forks" She teases. He huffs, but she can hear him smiling.
"Okay, Zen....I'll let you get back to whatever you were doing" She wants to argue with him, to beg him to talk to her longer, but if he thinks she's not happy, it will just make him feel worse about things.
"Yeah" She settles on instead, a sad smile on her lips. "Goodnight, Dad"
"Goodnight, Honey" He offers. She hangs up and then drops her phone into her lap. Tears gather in her eyes. Not because Bella is in the hospital. Charlie assured her that she was fine. But because she missed him. Because she misses her old life. She closes her eyes and takes a breath. When she heard that Bella was moving in with Charlie, after years since her last trip to Forks, after being moved away as a baby still, Zenaida was sad. She was sad that she wouldn't be there. She wouldn't get to spend that time with her sister. She's sad because she is missing out on her life, which she loved. She only left because there was the promise of something more exciting, but it's just so lonely. She's so lonely here. She wonders if Loki would allow her to return to Forks. If she would be allowed to leave Asgard.

Delicate as Glass
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] Nuri, an [Assistant Glassworker], only has a single Skill. It’s really not fair. He’s worked in the hot shop his entire life, following in his father’s footsteps after his parents passed away, but he’s stuck. Despite possessing above-average talent as an artisan, he still hasn’t shed his [Assistant] status, gained a second Skill, or even leveled enough to reach the first Threshold. Besides, he’s bored; most days he daydreams of adventure and becoming a hero, or pines for the renown that’s sure to be his if he evolves his Class into a [Master Glass Smith], but nothing ever changes—until suddenly, fate strikes, and nothing is ever the same again. These days, Nuri sees more magic, prestige, and adventure than he can handle as he gets swept up in realm-shaking conspiracies and desperate fights for his life. Maybe a boring life wasn’t so bad after all. Disclaimers: 1) Names were mostly chosen through random generators and aren’t necessarily final. If they seem derivative or boring, blame RNG. 2) Skills, Classes, levels, and the entire system is currently a work in progress; please be kind if it’s not very well fleshed out yet. 3) This is the first full-length novel I've set out to write without a single plot point ready. I had nothing in mind other than a recent visit to a hot shop. Molten glass is pretty awesome. 4) Related, I know much less about glass than I’d like. I did some research, but mistakes are bound to happen. If you have a correction, thanks! Please be polite about it. 5) The prose is my experimental attempt at first-person, present tense. I realize it may not be everyone’s preference, but I hope you’ll give it a try anyway!
