《My Best Friend》Chapter 2 ~ Mirror Mirror

I laid in my bed with my cell in my hand. I was recovering from my hangover and hadn't realized I had called Liz so many times. The one thing I did remember was her saying she and Aries were together. I hated that guy with a passion and I wished he would disappear. He wasn't good for her, he just wanted to hook up and use her.

I heard my phone ringing and knew exactly who it was; the only person that had that ringtone Buddy, by Musiq.

"Finished climbing Mt. Aries?" I asked sarcastically.

"Hahaha very funny. You didn't send the text."

"What text?"

"The one about your award you are receiving. My bestfriend is doing big things and I want to support him, plus you owe me a shopping spree."

"Awe don't worry about it. I'm sure you're too busy with Aries. I can find somebody to go with. I can just take my mama."

"Did you send her check this month?"

"Very funny." My mother was worst than any golddiggers. Ever since my dad left and later died, she made me the provider and when I got my contract she felt I owed her for supporting me all those years. My mother was a touchy subject.

"You know Aries and I are just friends."

"Friends with benefits. He's a straight up whore and no good for you."

"But he knows how to lay the pipe," she said laughing on the other end. I didn't find it funny.

"That's disgusting, I'm telling your mama on you."

"Last time I checked I was a grown ass woman. I support myself and have been since medical school, thank you very much."

"Too grown for your own good."

"Shut up Sean!"

We both laughed.

"Aries invited me to the game against you in a couple of months. I get to see you play."

"Really?" I said a little too excited. My team was playing his in Atlanta and I wondered if she was staying with him. Although Lizzy and I facetimed a few times a week, it had been awhile since I had seen her in the flesh.

"Yep, so you better put on a good performance."

"Haha funny. You got jokes. Who is ranked number one in rushing and the number one quarterback in the league?"

"Aries?"

"Not funny!"

"Yes it is because I can see your face all scrunched up. You are probably laying in the bed now with the blinds closed, the television on SportsCenter on mute, and mix matched dirty socks on."

"They are clean. Ms. Rosa washed everything yesterday."

I could hear her giggling in the background. She thought she knew me, although she did, but I would never confess that to her. I've always loved her like a sister but as we got older, it was turning into something different.

"I just pulled up to the hospital so I will have to talk to you later. Don't forget to take an aspirin and a vitamin C tablet to get over that hangover. Jazine or whatever her name wasn't any good for you. She's a cheater and they never prosper, so losing her isn't the end of the world. You still got me," she said laughing and blowing kisses on the phone.

"You sure about that? I think Aries is falling for you. By the way her name was Shaunte."

She blew out a deep breath. "We are just friends. Jazine, Shaunte, Poophead, whatever her name was still wasn't the right girl for you."

"Whatever. You need to read the article in this month's SportTimes. There was a big write up on him and it gets interesting when he says there's a special someone. If you think I'm lying you can see the article online."

She paused for a minute. "I gotta go."

"Just read it and tell me your thoughts. Love ya girl," I said hanging up. I knew I had hit a nerve and I didn't want to hear her flip mouth. I picked up the glass of water and took the aspirin and vitamin C tablet that was on my nightstand.

I hit Safari on my phone and googled the article. Over seven million hits on this fool. I scrolled down until I saw the video clip of Aries Wilson, just named Runningback of the Year by SportsTime. His picture took up the whole video slot and he was holding a football looking hard. I had no idea what she saw in him. He wasn't handsome. He was tall, with a few muscles and a big egghead.

I hit play and moved the bar back and forth until I got to the part where he talked about settling down.

Aries: " It's hard to find that right person. There are people out there that try to take advantage of you because of the money and fame so trying to find the right one is like finding a needle in a haystack."

Reporter: "So do you think, you will ever find the right one, a Mrs. Wilson?"

Aries: "Yes and to tell you the truth, I think I found that needle. She keeps me grounded and we are friends first which is really important to me. I've known her for a little over a year. She's smart, very attractive and who knows she could be my happily ever after."

Reporter: "You heard it here first on SportsTime."

I paused the interview and replayed it. If she was the one he was talking about I would have to make sure I proved to her he wasn't the one.

I got out my car and headed inside the hospital. What Sean just said about Aries had thrown me for a loop. It was no way he had serious feelings for me. Sure we were good bedroom partners but anything more I couldn't see. We lived in two different states and we really never talked about a commitment.

I heard my phone ringing and I grabbed it out my pocket. I didn't look at the caller id I just answered it.

"Dr. Johnson."

"I was just checking to see if you made it to work."

"Yes and on time. I thought you would be in your interview segment by now."

"I just finished up."

"How did it go?"

"Great. I think there is going to be a good turnout."

"Good. Who wouldn't want to get pointers from a famous football player?"

"I guess. I know one thing, I miss you already," he said in that deep sexy voice.

"You're so sweet," I said walking into my office. There was a huge bouquet of flowers on my desk, walking up to them I read the card.

"Their beautiful," I said grinning.

"I knew lavender roses are your favorites but they are not as beautiful as you."

"You're making me blush. They go so well in my office. I can't wait to get home and show you how much I appreciate them," I said.

"Oh and I can't wait until you do. There will be more waiting when you get home tonight."

He made me giggle like a young schoolgirl. Aries was so thoughtful and kind and any girl would be lucky to have him. We had our little spats but the makeup sex was more than worth it.

"Since you are off tomorrow, I made plans for us. Camp is from eight until two and after that it will be me and you. I have some things planned for us and hopefully you will enjoy."

"Sounds good. Can I ask you something?"

"Sure sweetness."

"I spoke to Sean and he said you did an interview with SportsTime and that you mentioned that you were seeing someone special. I haven't read the article, but Sean has this feeling you maybe talking about me. I assured him that we were just friends, but out of curiosity were you talking about me?"

He was quiet for a moment. There was a knock on my door.

"Come in."

"Dr. Johnson your first patient is here."

"I have to go. Maybe we can talk about this later."

"Okay," he said almost in a whisper.

I hung up putting on my white jacket. I grabbed my stethoscope wrapped it around my neck and headed out behind the nurse. I had to clear my mind as nasty thoughts of Aries and I twisted up in the sheets flashed before my eyes.

Once I got to the patient's room, I took a deep breath, grabbed the chart and entered the room.

I hung up with Lizzy and smiled. I knew the roses would be a perfect touch to show her that I really cared for her. I had been thinking long and hard about our relationship. The bed buddies was fine at first but the more I got to know her, the more I wanted a commitment.

I figured since she asked the question I would just break down and lay my cards on the table. Sean was right, the article was a reference to her. She had everything a man would want in a life partner. I couldn't help the smile that crossed my face when I thought about her. I looked at my watch realizing I was going to be late.

I got dressed and headed out to camp. I had some of my teammates coming and a few college coaches making their way in. I got some of the intercity kids involved and hopefully help them get noticed by college scouts. This was my third year doing it and each year it got bigger and bigger.

I greeted the kids as they came in. In order to participate the kids must have good grades, good sportsmanship and a letter from their coaches on behavior. Once everyone was settled in I was introduced and we separated into teams.

The parents sat on the sideline bleachers and watched their kids learn drills. One particular woman caught my eye. She looked like a girl Sharon I dated back in college. I asked my teammate Brandon to take over as I walked to the bleachers. The closer I got the more I became anxious.

"Hey there."

"I thought that was you," I said climbing up on the bleachers giving her a hug. She still wore the same perfume from college that turned me on. She was still thick in all the right places and her weave was on point. She still had a little ghetto girl in her and I noticed she wasn't wearing a ring.

"So you have a son here?"

"Yes. Number seventeen. His name is AJ."

I looked out across the field and spotted him. He was getting ready to play runningback. I watched him make a play and he sped away catching the ball.

"He's good. Good speed and positioning."

"He does. He watches you every Sunday. He idolizes you and wants to be like you."

I shook my head smiling. It was nice to be a role model but sometimes it wasn't always good.

"So how are things going?"

"It's been rough. I just lost my job a few weeks ago and I'm trying to find something but I do have an interview next week at a resturant."

"I'm sorry to hear that but I thought you were going to law school?"

"I got pregnant with AJ and had to quit."

"Where is his father?"

"He doesn't know about AJ."

"Well he should maybe he can help you out."

"Maybe you're right."

"Good. I gotta get back. It was good seeing you."

"You too," she said smiling.

I ran back out to the field. AJ caught my eye as he ran an interception and took off his helmet. He turned around and as he did he looked just like me.
