《Mind Parasite (Monster evolution, Lit RPG)》Chapter 1

A whole new world… as a mind parasite?
Ultimate quest gained!
Slay the king of gods, Urus.
I was not and suddenly I was… a mind parasite
Strange, right? It’s not like I had any choice in the matter. I don’t know how I ended up here, or what here even is. I know that I had a life before this, but I don’t remember how I died or what my name is. I reckon it started with m, or n, or a, wait a second… I guess I don’t remember anything from my past life.
There’s a box in front of me detailing my “ultimate quest”. Is this what every mind parasite goes through? I’ve never heard of a mind parasite before, but who cares about that. The most important question is.
Am I a good looking mind parasite?
No
Come on, I must be pretty good looking, right?
Okay sure
Really?
Nope
Currently, I’m inside an insect. A grasshopper to be precise. My legs feel light, strong, and incredibly sensitive. When I send the slightest command to move, they violently jerk and send me flying.
Same things for my arms.
In front of me there's a large blue strand of grass. It’s at least ten times the length of my body, and it’s thick. There’s a bunch of them around me. I guess I’m in the plains, considering the lack of trees.
Using my sticky feet, I walk up the smooth surface of the grass. It’s a strange feeling walking vertically, feels like the world’s twisted itself around, like I’m going to fall any second now. But I don’t.
My eyes are so large that I can see all around me, the full 360 degrees, but it’s a fuzzy sight, splintered by lines going around them. Directly behind me, or I guess it would be above me… above my head, there we go, there’s a bee on a flower.

Should I kill it? I wonder what the grasshopper would do given this scenario. I don’t feel any particular way. I wonder if I retained any of the grasshopper's urges when I took over this body.
I’m still breathing despite not trying to. Perhaps a part of me does that consciously, or perhaps I’ve only conquered the conscious part of the grasshopper's brain.
Strange blue boxes in front of me, what should I do?
Complete the ultimate quest.
Yeah but how.

Hey, fuck you. Wait a minute, what should I even call you, and why give me the task if you’re so sure I’ll fail?
Index is sufficient. You are not the only bearer of the quest.
Fuck you index!
Clearly the system won’t tell me how to do it, but I have a tough time thinking a grasshopper could slay the king of gods. There must be a way of progression. Suddenly, a voice breaks my contemplation. A green grasshopper lands above me.
“Hey you,” it says using its legs, completely shocking me. I didn’t think grasshoppers could speak like this.
“Zhuthluluthhhlyly,” I sputtered. Apparently I can’t speak, but I can comprehend the language.
“Mate, you’re not acting like yourself.” If only you knew.
“Zhuthu tu-tu-zu.”
“Your jokes have always been weird I guess,” it says, walking up to me. ”Anyway, you won’t believe it. I found one of those big pink bees wounded. It’s only one jump away from here.”
“Zu.”
“I think we can take it if we work together.”
“Zu zu.”
“Okay then weirdo. Follow me.”
I see his legs stretching, and contracting, before exploding into a massive jump. He flies away in a direction. Am I supposed to do the same thing? I stretch my legs, contract them, and push all the energy I have into them.

Whoosh!
Air blows into my face as if a hair blower on the highest speed blasting my face. I rise higher and higher as the grass below me grows smaller. An onslaught of panic spreads across my body, it feels tingly. That’s when I realize that I’m afraid of heights. I start falling. I think I’m about to get squished.
I fall flat on my face, a small distance away from my friend, or I guess, my host’s friend. It stares at me like I’m some sort of idiot.
“This way,” it says, and skits away towards one direction. I follow behind it, and behind one strand of giant blue grass I see a pink bee with ruined wings. It’s flapping them at giga speeds but won’t gain any traction.
“Zuuzuu.”
“Yeah, there it is. A pink bee. Probably thinks its better than us.” The bee keeps trying to fly away. It doesn’t seem afraid of us. “Okay listen, here’s what we gotta do. You attack it from the front, and I’ll attack it from the back.”
“Zu,” I nod in affirmation.
A part of me tells me this is a really stupid idea. Another part of me tells me that it’s only a bee, and how bad can a bee be? See what I did there? Come on, that’s pretty funny.
Estimated chance of competition has gone down.

Hey fuck you!
I skit up to the bee. It still doesn’t pay me any attention. I see the other grasshopper skit around it. How do grasshoppers fight? I guess my legs are quite powerful.
I skit around, and kick the bee in the face. It buzzes in anger, probably cursing me in bee language and tries to fly away. I feel a sting in my legs. The bee corroded my legs. It’s only now that I realize the different colour on the floor beneath the bee. This is an acidic bee.
“Good hit!” It kicks the bee back to me. It’s feet are also eroded.
Blood stains the pink bee. Our kicks really are powerful. I kick it back to the other grasshopper. My leg doesn’t hurt despite it basically being fully corroded. I guess that’s one of the benefits behind being an insect.

This is pretty sick. My legs are roasted so I guess I have to go with weak regeneration. Nice, I can already feel the benefits come in.

When freshly-graduated Dr. Selva Imroth accepted a short job from her former doktormutter, she had expected to interview a few PhD washouts and write a report to the Dean. Unfortunately for Selva, everything in her life has to be an ordeal. Updates every weekday, but not on the weekend. I hadn't planned on doing NaNoWriMo, but then on Halloween night I was sharing an old plot bunny with a new friend and realized, "oh shit I can actually use this." So, here we are. Thanks, friend. In true NaNoWriMo fashion, I will not be using my typical editing process here, and will instead simply vomit words onto your screen as quickly as possible, trying valiantly to avoid asking myself "oh my god who CARES" because tangents are important to wordcount.
