《Taking Another Look》(8th entry)Unwritten Story

Hey Journal I'd like to tell another close story to my heart, but with a little more fiction thrown in to make it more exciting!
*****
I feel it coming, a source of energy burning inside of me, similar to caffeine, a rush causing me to shake and shiver. I don’t feel hyper, but calm as the energy rushes from the tip of my toes to the strands of hair on my head.
My lifestyle pushes me to a new rank, a grunt, working for a higher power then myself. The tasks given to me is managing the structure of the desires of my other grunts that do different tasks. To keep them content, to be efficient, and to fix any issues related to stress.
The more I manage the desires of the other grunts, the higher power gives m more energy, to keep me going. Although I continue to get a reliable source of energy, my parts start to deteriorate as I try to perform at my best since the start of my grunt work. I’m overdue for a checkup, but I can’t stop looking after the other grunts. I have grown too stubborn to not let them feel stress.
*****
The higher power starts at o notice I have been making mistakes, and functioning slower in comparison of how I was the last 30 cycles of energy intake.
Everything is dark, the higher power stopped giving me energy. I slowed down completely to a stop. My skin, it peeled off, my components are exposed to a prodding for small periods of time. I am constantly under examination for many unused cycles I could run on, but every time energy comes, it is drained out me after a short period.
*****
Finally, light shrouds me in a very blinding manner, then I feel my body shiver, then I suddenly feel a pinching sensation all over my body, my joints ache in excruciating pain. My sight is restored, I see my reflection in a metal wall and tools all around me scattered, as well as cans of some kinds of fluids. Then I hear a voice speak in my ear...

“Can you hear me? Testing hearing transmitter. Looks like a success there. This engineer unit will have to restart its tasks soon again. The diagnosis from the level of performance to deterioration ratio has been adjusted. This unit was aware of needing a repair but refused.”
A man in coveralls with a tablet and stylus, is busy writing notes while walking in a circle around me. It looks like he is one of the higher powers that gives me energy. He has gifted me with sensation and hearing. My understanding of their language and my tasks are a little out of date as I feel no urge to immediately go find my other grunt workers to help.
“Results seem to be a success, this unit will now properly repair itself when it starts to break down this time. It will keep maintaining the other units to a bare minimum, instead of its best. This way it will last longer and we will have less stress on the engineer units. Even though the other units won’t be at top performance all the time, this was a good experiment.”
They made me break down by taking care of others on purpose? They made me feel the urge to resist the urge to help myself when I ended up with so many mistakes because of it?
“This unit did work really well, we now know which pieces to upgrade, and know some of the glitches it will go through. Even though it destroyed several fabricating units, it rebuilt them back to a better performing unit. It learns as it tends to the other units and updates it personal blueprints for each different unit.”
Well yes, I did destroy a fellow grunt worker when its tools started to jam, I tried to fix it but caused it to explode into a wreck. I used the pieces it was working on, and its original pieces to remake it with an unjamming function built into it. It was its biggest desire as I rebuilt that unit.

“We are giving this special unit the ability to hear its surroundings and feel its surroundings so it can better make blueprints that are quieter and gentler, to ultimately make a trait of smooth soundless functioning units. We have uploaded its personal blueprints throughout the main systems to implement these fixes for better functioning stations.”
The man in coveralls approaches me as he focus on different parts of my body until he rests his gaze at my head, at my hearing transmitters.
“So let’s see how caring you will be this time, when you can only upgrade others, and not yourself. To a bare minimum for others and to only repair yourself back to pristine condition after each boot up. While still being as efficient as possible at doing your work tasks. Do you understand your function unit 867?”
I nod at the higher power as I feel myself need to wear clothes and lubricate my painful joints. I then look up in my blueprints on my unit on how to do so. I go and attach a tiny tube with a needle tip to my joints and pump a fluid from the can meant for joint relief. I then ask the higher power for clothing to protect my components from deterioration.
“Good the self preservation rule is in full effect in this unit this time. Better then it was when it was functioning like a unclothed manikin. Here, take these jeans and dress shirt. Make sure not to get your clothing jammed in the other units when repairing them.”
*****
I nod to show I understand. I wasn’t given a sound making device like the higher power to communicate. It wants future units to be quiet, so I will do as it desires.
*****
So journal, that was my experience for some of my work life until my depression took over and caused me to burn out with a smile of my face with tears leaking out of my eyes. All the while, trying my best to support others rather then myself.
My story is still going, and I have more experiences I wish to tell. So until next time journal good night.

Fallout: Vault X
An original novel set in the Fallout universe, written to be accessible to all, featuring unique people and places. Vol.II. out now Fallout: Vault X tells the story of John. A vault dweller, who spent every day of his twenty five years underground. Like his father, and his father before him. Proud to live in the last remaining bastion of humanity, all that survived The Great War of the atomic age. Hidden deep below the surface of the earth, toiling under brutal conditions. Year after year, decade upon decade. All to expand into the natural cave system the Vault occupied, building for the future. However, John knew what his forefathers did not, that everything he’d been taught was a lie. After finishing school at the age of ten, John received his standard issue pipboy. An arm mounted personal computer, worn by everyone in the Vault. Used to coordinate the relentless pace of expansion, needed to work as an apprentice. To learn the craft that would be his life’s work. A noble calling to ensure a future for all that remained of the human race. A quirk of fate saw John equipped not with the crude, clunky, pipboy model his father wore. That almost everyone around him wore. His looked smaller, sleeker, finished in a jet black sheen. And capable of doing far more than its drab counterparts. The world above had been ravaged by atomic flames, yet life clung to its bones. The Red Valley fared better than most in the century since the bombs fell. The clean water and rich soil protected by rolling hills. All spared from direct strikes, for the most part. Life survived here. Trees spawned from charred ground, misshapen, green leaves turned red. Along with simple crops, grown wild at first, then cultivated by the survivors. The scavengers of the old world were inventive, hardy people. All determined to rebuild in the ruins of a world they never knew. In the decades that passed settlements emerged. They grew, spreading along the valley floor. Reclaiming the pre-war remnants of the once industrialised heartland. Salvaging the robotic wonders of a bygone age to build their walls and work their fields. To protect them in the dark of the wasteland. But such things are uncommon in this world, and the rarer something is, the greater its value. And the worth of pre-war technology had not gone unnoticed. The last, real, power in this world rested in the mechanised hands of The Brotherhood of Steel. Forged from the mortally wounded old world military. The Brotherhood used its access to the weapons made for a conflict no one won to strike out into the wastes. Men and women were equipped with advanced armour, aerial transportation, high grade weaponry. Accompanied by the training, strength, and will, to put them to use. They established chapters and set up outputs far and wide. All dedicated to a single purpose. To ensure the technology left abandoned by its long dead creators didn’t fall into the wrong hands. Namely, any hands that were not their own. This is the world John escaped into. A place of horrors brought forth from atomic fire. A place where survival meant battling against the darkness. Fighting a war each day to get to the next. And war...war never changes
