《The Sinful Mortal》Death

Artix sat at his desk and started to read the book. The book started with the author thanking his friends and colleagues with special attention given to his wife. Then the author started to describe the Death Law in simple terms. The author went from introducing the law, proving some simple theories and finally giving practical examples on how to use simple death spells in a fight. Artix took only nine days to finish the book. At the end, the author left a special note concerning Law Masters. He said: 'Death, being one of the seven major laws that could be mastered, is valued highly among Warriors. Unfortunately, due to fear- which many deny but it is the truth- not many researches are done on the Death Law. As for those who want to master death, they need to accept it. Only one who firmly believes that they could die at any moment and one that does not fear death would be able to establish a link with death. When both their connection and link reaches the minimum standard, the two would merge to form what we call a 'channel' with death. They would then be eligible to be called a Death Master.' The author then gave a warning about Law Masters, 'If said Law Master were to reject death in the future, then the channel would become unstable, leading, in the worst scenario, to death.'
Artix closed the book and contemplated silently.
'Looks like not all the laws can be mastered. Hmmm, what are the seven major laws? Death is one and I remember Ma'am say that there are Space Masters, so space should be another one. There are still five more...'
'From the looks of it, me forming a link, yes a link with death is indeed related to my goal.'

'But I haven't reached the point where I can accept death at any time...'
'Looks like becoming a Death Master would be more difficult than I originally thought. Looks like my previous thoughts were too naive. I should probably focus on getting in the top 1000, while studying death on the side,' Artix thought silently. As for the dangers associated with a Death Master, that didn't burden his mind. His thought was simple, 'I should be safe as long as I pursue my goal.'
Artix then went on to revise and summarise what he learned from the book. He took out a notebook and started recollecting the definitions and theorems introduced in the book. He then tore out a page and used a spell he recently learned. He infused death with mana through the weak connection he established and willed to use the right command. With no surprises, he failed. Artix, even though he expected the results, became slightly depressed. Suddenly, he thought of something. He again infused death with mana, but this time through his link. The page turned from white to brown before being reduced to dust. Artix became overjoyed. Then he checked his condition, 'from the looks of it, I can only perform it once more before I pass out from exhaustion. Plus, the target is just a thin sheet of paper. Well, this is fine for now since my domain is just 16m'.
Artix learned a total of two basic death spells. The one he used right now was called Aging. It could be used on non-living targets. The spell accelerated the targets 'death'. It would need more mana depending on the targets size and its material. The other spell Artix learned was called Hide. It lowered one's presence as if death was silently approaching. The caster would need to continuously supply mana to keep the spell active. This spell did not hide the caster's body, it only made others subconsciously ignore them. Opponent's with high intelligence or strength would be more resistant. Also, the bigger the flow rate of mana was, the lower one's presence would be.

Artix went down to take a stroll and try out his Hide spell. He went to find a nearby teleportation platform and teleported to the garden in the academy. Artix arrived in the garden and saw many students taking strolls around. 'This is perfect,' Artix thought.
The garden was incredibly vast. It had sparsely distributed trees and was covered with grass. It also had paved roads. There was a lake in the middle of the garden, one could see many boats carrying lovebirds on it. A group of boys were competing on who can throw a rock the farthest, while the girls were watching them as they commented on how stupid boys are. Some were seen sleeping under A big tree, while others were ranking girls who passed by.
A boy walked out of a teleportation platform. He looked around and chose a random direction. He walked alone and crashed into three people on the way. Two boys and a girl who were younger than him. The boy then continued and crashed into four more people. Two boy and two girls about his age. The boy didn't stop. He went and this time crashed into three people. Three boys who were older than him. The boy got addicted and went to crash into the oldest person he found. He crashed into a boy who was about to become an adult. This time, he received a beating.
Artix massaged his sore face and found a tree to sit under. He then summarised his experience.
'The spell doesn't put much load on my body, I think I can keep it active for an hour in my best condition if I were to keep supplying it at the minimum rate.'
'The best part is it's effectiveness, apart from the last guy, the others didn't notice me approaching at all!'
'I think, if I increased the supply rate to double the minimum, he wouldn't have been able to notice me.'
'It also seems that when I hit someone the effect wears out, the book also said that if you use this spell after someone locked onto you, it wouldn't be effective on them.'
'Well these are people who don't pay much attention to their surroundings and have their guard down, plus people not being able to notice me might not necessarily be a good thing, I need to be aware of my surroundings all the time.'
Suddenly, a shadow covered Artix. He looked up to see that a fat boy was about to sit on him. He forgot to cut off the supply.
