《Sekai》Chapter 3: Soothing the Soul

As Hartea would walk away from the front of the forest -- he would catch himself in the midst of a large town undergoing a heavy storm. He would remove a small quilt from his pocket, but would soon place it back in his pocket
Hartea: I can't use this, it'll get wet, or soaked!
He would place it back into his pocket as he would shrug, just he'll just have to be sick. As he would begin to walk down the soaked city streets, but he could hear the opening of a door slamming behind him, as he jumped from shock, and turned around to the source of the noise, as a brown-haired woman who's hair reached down to her shoulders would motion Hartea to "come here". Hartea blinked, as he would then walk over to the lady, as she would step back, allowing Hartea to walk into the room. Hartea was slightly taken by surprise, he looked around the home and saw that it had two beds, one bed that seemed as if it could hold two people, while the second one was much smaller and looked as if Hartea could fit into that bed just fine. The woman who had let him wore a black double face open kimono coat with a blend of cashmere and wool, with an open front. It was a wide kimono-style cuffed sleeves. She would sigh, and swipe her forehead as Hartea would take a seat at the table near the small kitchen room not too far off from the left entrance of the house. She would look at him, standing over him as she held her hands
Woman: There, now you've got some shelter from this heavy weather! Now there kid, what were you doing out there?
Hartea: Oh, I had just gotten out of the forest. . .and ended up here.

Woman: The forest? I heard that place is dangerous, how did you get out on your own?
Hartea: Oh, I didn't. . .I just had this old man help me.
Woman: Oh, how nice of him! So, where are you off to now?
Hartea: Well. . .I don't know, I may go back to look for my brother. . .we just separated in the forest. . .either that, or I'll keep going north. That's what my brother told me to do whenever we got separated, and stop at some place where he could find me. Maybe I could stay here, or just check out the mountain to kill some time. . I might just stay th-
Woman: The mountains!? Are you crazy!? You do not want to go there!
Hartea: . . .Why?
Woman: It's. . .highly dangerous. I don't know what's up there. . .but every night when someone in the town goes out to receive more food for our town. . .they mostly don't come back, and we've been losing our food lately. . .My husband and son went there three days ago, and they haven't come back yet. . .
The woman looks down, as her eyes resembled the sadness she felt. Hartea could feel it too, as he held the quilt he had removed from his pocket -- staring at it for awhile, then looking at the lady with a small glare in his eyes, standing from his feet as he shouted out
Hartea: OKAY.
Woman: . . .What? Okay, what??
Hartea: I'll get your lady back, family!
Woman: . . .WHAT.
Hartea: OKAY, BYE.
And with that, Hartea rushed out the door, wrapping his quilt around his mouth like a scarf and he placed on the hood on his head, releasing a loud "Woo" from his mouth, as he ran through the large town, and took a sharp turn to the left -- as he ran up a large slope to the top of the mountain. . .but he didn't reach to the top so quickly. As he was around the mid-way point, however they several jagged pointed ends and flat landscape around the base area made him assume he had made it to the top, despite the huge point end still spiking up behind him.

Hartea: Okay, if I went missing -- where would I be? Hmm. . .I don't know. . .
Hartea placed his hand on his chin, as he continued to walk around the flat scope, he would then see a forest underneath his feet, underneath the mountain he was currently very high up in.
Hartea: A forest, duh! Why didn't I think of this sooner!?
Hartea would run off the mountain, however, clearly unaware how much lower the forest was under him -- as he would fall and yell, as he hit a rock on the side of the mountain, and then he would roll down and fall flat on his face. After a couple of seconds of kissing the ground, Hartea would give himself the thumbs up, as he heard a small giggle from a distance. He would quickly jump back on his feet and look very disturbed, scanning the area with his eyes and then would quickly give up, as he would turn back to the mountain to climb on top of it, then he turned around and saw a slim lady wearing a golden kimono and had long black hair, her eyes were closed, and her hands were hidden in the link of her sleeves. She would shake her head left and right as she would just look at Hartea
Lady: Hey. . .are you alright?
Hartea: Oh yeah I'm just fine, I'm just. . .trynna get back up to the mountains.
Lady: What. . .are you doing here. . .?
The Lady would say with a smile, however, she would emit a small growling sound, and it didn't come from her stomach, but much rather her hair, as she would begin to whisper
Lady(Whispering): No. . .Please hold on, he's just a child.
Hartea would raise an eyebrow at the lady, as he nodded, attempting to climb the mountain even faster
Hartea: Huh, well. Don't have to tell me anything, I'm outta he-
And just as Hartea spoke his final sentence, the growl would grow louder, and the hair on the back of the lady's hair would manifest into sharp claws and blades that would slash at Hartea, he would spring off the wall and onto the floor -- avoiding the damage he would've taken but the hair would then wrap around Hartea, as laughter could be heard. Hartea couldn't move his arms, and he tried to break his way through -- but he overpowered.
Lady: Child, give me your food. . .can't you tell I'm starving?
Hartea would struggle to keep his eyes open, as he would try to make out who's face the hair belonged too -- but he couldn't, as he would soon blackout.

The Twelve
In a world marred by the supernatural, Japan suffers from its own fair share of evil and demonic disasters, with generations of shamans known as Onmyoji protecting their homeland from these forces of evil. Capable of wielding magic and using spirits of their own, these shamans were not only skilled in battle, but also divination. However, they were unable to correctly predict Japan's loss in World War Two, and suffered the punishments that followed. Persecuted and torn apart by infighting, the Onmyoji reunited under the banner of the Tsuchimikado clan, descendants of Abe no Seimei, one of the greatest Onmyoji to ever live. The Onmyoji began to rebuild and to regrow. Ren is the sole heir to the Tsuchimikado family, but has been unable to practice Onmyodo ever since his birth, even though he possesses the greatest ability in the family. But when disaster befalls his family, Ren has nobody to turn to, and no idea how to use his powers. As he journeys to escape the same fate his family faced and attempts to learn how to use his powers, there is only one question on his mind; as the Tsuchimikado heir, how can he save the Onmyoji... from themselves? ---------------------------------------------- note from author: I'm writing this based loosely on the very real theories of Onmyodo, and so my writing may not be a truthful or accurate depiction of Onmyodo or other related areas, such as religion, for instance. That is why, while depicted in the real world, events that happen may seem unrealistic and it may be easier to imagine it as a parallel universe that is the same as ours, but with slight differences so that my possible errors will be easier to overlook. Sorry, and thanks!

In the 20th century America reinvented itself. Devastated by depression, scarred by war, rocked by a revolution, Americans banded together to preserve their country and their freedom. They had faith in themselves, faith in one another, and for those who believed…faith in God. This novel tells the story of one American who lived through those turbulent years….years that would test his character and the character of a nation. For Josh Sanders it begins in 1935. A star athlete in school, pro football is a ticket out of poverty during the Great Depression; but when his father, a WWI veteran, is killed during a robbery, Josh’s spirit is broken, and with it his boyhood dream. To honor his father Josh joins the war effort in 1942, distinguishing himself as a fighter pilot, until a fateful decision near the end of the war changes the course of his life once again. But many years later, after a stint as a boxer and a failed marriage, Josh finds his calling…at a time when the country is at war with itself. The year is 1968. King and Kennedy have been killed, race riots are breaking out, and Vietnam has become an albatross, causing massive protests across the country. In the streets of San Francisco Josh watches a crowd of students march for peace. As a veteran he’s conflicted, toward the war and those who oppose it. But when he encounters Rosy Goldin, a spirited young protester in need of help, a voice from the past calls him to action. His good intentions are soon tested when Rosy falls in love with the fugitive anti-war activist Erick White, a young man determined to oppose the war at all costs, against the wishes of his own father. Fearful of what happens to Rosy, Josh confronts Erick, unwilling to be part of his plan to escape…until he meets the boy’s father. A high-powered criminal attorney, Karl White is also a flag-waving patriot demanding that his son follow the law. But as White makes his case Josh is jolted by a painful war-time memory, a crisis of conscience that will soon determine the fate of Rosy Goldin and Erick White.
