Chapter 5 (T) - Fall of The Beast

This dragon thing has to be using either sound or smell. I can’t do much for smell, but I’m good at being quiet. If I can sneak up behind it, I might be able to figure something out! Suddenly, the dragon roars. Crap, I just left Jay! I turn to try and run back and help him… but I’m too late. I turn back around the corner just in time to see him engulfed in flame. I- I can’t bring myself to look away. How could I have been so stupid as to-

And then, the fire subsides. Miraculously, Jay stands exactly where he’d been, completely unharmed. His arm is raised to the dragon, a bright blue light spreading from his forearm in a circle, forming a shield between him and the dragon. It has to be magic, but I’ve never seen magic like it before! And in his other hand, he holds the sword I gave back to him earlier, no longer in its sheath. Even from a distance, I can see the emblem carved into the blade, and let out a gasp. That- That sword! It’s-

Before I even finish my thought, Jay breaks into a sprint. Is he- Why is he running straight at the dragon?! Another jet of flame breaks around his magical shield as he approaches the beast. Suddenly, he jumps impossibly high into the air, at least ten feet, landing on the beast’s face. Without a moment’s hesitation, he plunges the sword into the beast’s clawed, no longer sword-free eye. It reels back and roars in pain, throwing him into the air behind it in the process. He’s still gripping the sword. Despite falling fifteen feet at least, he lands perfectly on his feet, immediately spinning to face the dragon again. How the hell is he doing that?! His legs should be broken by now!

Before he has a chance to do anything else, though, the dragon lashes out with its tail. The tail hits him square in the chest, and he flies through the air, crashing through the window of a burning house and vanishing from sight. Roaring in agony, the dragon turns to face the house Jay got knocked into.

I jump out of my hiding spot and without thinking, yell at the monster. “HEY, OVER HERE!” The dragon turns away from the house to glare at me as I begin regretting my life choices. I’ve gotta get that thing away from Jay, but there was really probably a better way to do it… Well, too late!

I dart away around a corner as the spot I stood on a moment ago gets lit up by the dragon’s fire. I can’t hear the dragon’s footsteps, so I guess it’s standing still, trying to figure out where I went. That means it can’t smell me. It tracks based on sound! If I just stay quiet, I might be able to do something without it noticing! Another idea forms in my head. It’s insane, but it just might work! Slowly, I start sneaking my way around the houses to the Knights’ Tower.

The Tower seems to be completely empty, at least on the first few floors. Everyone probably evacuated. ...Or at least I hope that’s what happened. Either way, it’s good for my crazy idea. Less people means less noise. I dart up the stairs as quietly as possible, until I’m on the third floor. The dragon is just down the street, still listening for any sign of me. I look around the room. Looks like someone’s office. I grab a few heavy books from the desk and throw them out the window. The books make a little bit of noise hitting the ground below, but not enough for the dragon to care. Alright, plan b. I slowly push the entire desk to the window, and send THAT crashing down too. The dragon turns to look straight at the base of the tower. Looks like that got its attention.

The dragon walks up to the base of the tower. It looks like it’s moving slow, but its sheer size means it still travels incredibly fast. However, it doesn’t realize the sound it’s following came from somewhere above it. As it stands at the base of the tower, searching for who the sound came from, I steel myself. It all comes down to this. Here goes nothing.

I leap from the window, right onto the monster’s head. It growls in surprise. Before it has a chance to do anything, I grab the hilt of the sword still embedded in its eye. Taking a deep breath and closing my eyes, I gather all the magic I can muster, and push as much of it as I can through the sword. Even through my closed eyes, I can see the sword’s blade shine with the electricity pouring through it. The dragon shrieks in agony. It rears back on its hind legs and bucks and sways violently. I feel myself get thrown loose, but I can’t bring myself to open my eyes as I start to fall towards the pavement below.
