《THE MAN WHO FOUGHT GOD》7. Alpha

The sun starts to rise, clearing away the night as it spread across the sky. It touches a small cave in the uninhabitable snow-covered mountains with its light.

"Woof."

Joseph shoots up from his animal pelt covers, "I'm up, I'm up!" Standing up he walks over to the wall with a handcrafted rack. He grabs his bear coat, wrapping it around his waist. It covers his legs, both sides overlapping over the front of his left leg. Joseph then grabs a chest and back armor piece made out of wood, placing the leather straps that connect them on his shoulders. After situating the chest and back piece he tightens a bottom leather strap on each side. When he does this the back and chest pieces interlock on the sides, however, there is a gap in each place it interlocks. A good portion of his upper chest is unprotected by the armor as well as the lower part of his stomach, the same can be said for his back.

Joseph looks at the gaps shaking his head, "I'm going to have to make a new set of armor soon, this one is starting to become so small."

Joseph then picks up two wooden gauntlets placing one on each scar-painted arm. Each gauntlet goes from just above the creased skin on the inside of his elbow down to just below the creased skin on the underside of his wrist. With the sides of his gauntlets sticking out over his elbow and the top reaching just below his knuckles. There is also a gap in his gauntlet, this time he puts a flat piece of wood in the gap, tightening leather straps over the top of it. The gauntlet would just fall off or move around if it were not for this final wooden piece and leather straps that, when tightened over the wooden piece, secures the gauntlets to Joseph's arms.

Joseph then carefully puts on his boots while facing away from White, making sure she can't see the laces. After that he goes to reach for his spear, stopping just before grabbing it. "Isn't this your day to hunt?" Joseph turns to White, pulling his hand away from his spear.

White turns her head looking away from him, "Don't worry White, I'll go with you but I'm not catching anything." White then looks back to Joseph as he walks to the cave exit, standing up and running next to him. Joseph reaches over and hits White hard on the side with an open hand a few times. Her tail wags as they walk.

Once out of the cave Joseph and White stop a few feet apart from each other. White puts her front paws out dropping her head and raising her rear into the air while Joseph, squats down slapping both thighs and taking a turn raising each leg above his head while balancing on the other.

Once they both finish Joseph looks at White. "This isn't training White, I already know how to track so you're doing it on your day to hunt. You should just be happy I'm coming with you instead of taking a dip in the ‘Floating Ice’ pond."

"Woooo!" White turned her head to Joseph, "Nope, not giving in to the baby eyes." White looked away snorting and then took off running, kicking up snow at Joseph as she left him behind. "Youuuu!" Joseph took off running after White, his footsteps louder but just as fast as White's.

Joseph quickly gained ground on White, 'I see she wants me to catch up to her of course. Acting all mad but she still doesn't want to be alone on a single hunt.'

They ran side by side, carving a path through the snow. Though Joseph had grown a great deal over the almost two years White and he had been together she still stood above his waist on all fours. The wind picked up Joseph's bear-kilt and it flowed in the air as he ran.

After running for twenty minutes White started to pick up the speed, 'Looks like she found something. Finally, I wish we didn't have to go this far from home but all the animals have moved out of the area, scaredy-cats!" Joseph stopped, catching his breath, "Better let her take it from here, moving at this speed all I'll do is give away her position." Joseph leapt up, grabbing onto a branch about twelve feet off the ground, and threw himself up on top of it.

"It won't be much longer and I'll have to leave White. She's taught me so much, hunting, tracking, fighting, and surviving. I wish I could show her as much as she did me, but, I think I've done all I can with her. She's definitely made me stronger so I don't regret staying with her but I have to get stronger and to do that I'll need to move on and find other humans, strong ones. They can teach me how to fight like a warrior, and how to fight a warrior." Joseph sat in the tree thinking about when he should leave White and how to do it. 'Just a little longer, I'll spend all the time I can with her while I can.'

Joseph jumped from branch to branch all the way up the tree and looked around, "What's taking her so long? WAIT! She's not eating it is she?" Joseph jumped down grabbing branches as he fell just to slow his free fall, slightly. He hit the ground making a small crater in the snow, "WHITE!" and took off running at top speed following White's tracks.

After a while, joseph came to a stop looking at the tracks, they were everywhere. "These aren't White's tracks?" Joseph looked around at the area, "These tracks, none of them are the same. I can tell that some aren't White's but others are too similar to tell which is which."

Joseph stood there trying to think of a way through then--the sound of growls and barks passed by. 'The tone of these, they all sound serious, these are fighting sounds.' Joseph sprinted after the sound not carrying about how heavy his footsteps landed. he came to a small stream where White was surrounded by five other wolves, all different colors.

White stood in the middle of their encirclement with her tail between her legs and her snout to the ground. She kept her head just high enough to make sure she could see if one attacked. 'I've never seen White like that before." Whenever the wolves would bark at her she whimpered in response, except for one wolf. This one stood closer than the others and also seemed to be the largest out of the five. "Why is she backing down to him, she's bigger than him." Though the wolf was the largest, White had a couple of inches on his height and more muscle on her frame.

'Should I wait here and do an ambush attack when they try to attack her, or should I run out there now and stand by her side to fight them off.' Joseph moved forward slowly, making sure every step was as silent as possible. Under normal circumstances, he had no chance of getting close without being noticed. 'But maybe since they are so focused on White I can.'

While he closed in on them the wolves slowly closed the circle forcing White to get closer to the largest one. Their snaps came closer and closer to getting her. The largest wolf was a slightly darker shade of white than White was. If She was fresh snow, he was a dirty melted sheet of snow.

'I can't just sit here and watch them treat her like that! I'm going to defeat GOD, they are just a stepping stone to that goal.' Joseph climbed up a tree, moving from tree to tree until he got close enough. Then he pushed off the trunk, shooting himself out and landing into the snow with a loud thump, sliding to a stop only twenty feet behind the largest wolf of the group. White peeked around the wolf to see Joseph, only raising her head up slightly.
